  1. Nothing wrong with Briley barrels. I have one with the spherical bushing in a Craig Custom Caspian limited gun. Fred wouldn't have used it if it wasn't a high quality part.
  2. The easiest way to find out is to send John Amidon an email and tell him what you propose to do and ask him if it is legal. I have done this several times in the past and always gotten a polite well thought answer. I think his address is still JohnAmidon at verizon.net
  3. I believe Jim Anglin at Sailors Custom Pistols is well regarded.
  4. Another way to look at it is the number of wins in East vs. West games. The West division record against the East is currently 10-2, with 6 games left. Sadly, the more embarrassing loss (at least, to me) of the 2 so far was when Vandy beat Ole Miss. Look... every so often Vandy has to beat someone... It was just Ole Miss' turn. Probably just karma catching up to them for ditching the Colonel
  5. I died laughing several times. Very funny.
  6. Yep cal is a hell of a thing to have to face first thing in the morning, no doubt about it.
  7. To shoot Open? Would be Minor in Limited. I was wondering how many 9mm would fit in a 170mm singlestack mag if someone wanted to shoot Limited Minor. Yes I was asking about open... I know it is a bit off topic but figured while we were on the subject of 170mm single stack mags I'd pose the question...
  8. I believe that is something of a left over from before there was a single stack division. It let single stack guns shoot limited without so much disadvantage. I think the last time I saw anyone do it was Jay Christy. He was shooting a single stack gun in limited with 170 mags. But that would have been like 99 or 2000. By the way any idea how many rounds of super comp you could get in a 170 single stack mag? I have a friend with a single stack super open gun he built for the Sportmans Team Challenge. He had considered shooting the occasional uspsa match with.
  9. I think when I first started buying these from clark they came with the tube already glued on to the barrel nut, and you installed it as one piece? Unless you have a good reason to take the tube off the nut I wouldn't bother. It seems likely one of two things will happen when you torque it down when you reinstall it... Either it will go back on with no problem or the glue bond will break loose then you reinstall the nut and glue the tube back.
  10. The float tube looks like armalite and I think you can get the sights from JP
  11. I have bought several used open guns and never had a problem with them. So long as the gun runs, is accurate, and was built by a competent smith I don't see a problem with it. The other plus I see with this is that the guy that built it is local to you. Do other shooters in your area have guns built by this smith? Are they generally satisfied with his work? If so it is hard to beat having your smith local.
  12. +1 on the Mcree stock his work is first class and Scott is a great guy. He did one for me that fits a Savage action and takes AI mags that I have very pleased with.
  13. Does anyone know what the outside diameter of the barrel extension and the inside diameter of the upper should measure (and their tolerances)? I am in the process of building another AR-15 upper. When I test fit the barrel to the upper there was more slop than I was used to. I measured the OD of the barrel extension at .998". I then measured the ID of the upper to be 1.002". So there appears to be about .004" of slop between them. I know that doesn't sound like much but it lets the barrel wiggle more than I am used to. My normal fix for this would be to coat the outside of the barrel extension with blue loctite and assemble (making sure to wipe any extra loctite off so I can get it apart again if I have to). The idea being that when the loctite cures it will take up some of the slack so that the zero doesn't wander when it heats up. Thoughts as to which part is off or is this just a case of tolerance stacking? Will the loctite bridge that much of a gap or will it wander on me as it heats?
  14. Before I bought one I would want to know how it is supposed to work. That way I could evaluate the claims made vs the mechanism by which they are supposed to be achieved so I can see if they seem reasonable.
  15. Or maybe there is some kind of manifold/expansion chamber machined into the gas block to let the gas expand and drop the pressure in the gas tube? If you ever get an explanation let us know what they say...
  16. Hmm.... lathe turned solids...yummy... Wish I could afford to shoot those in my .50
  17. I can vouch for fred's work. I have one of his caspian limited guns. It is one of the most precisely built guns I have ever handled.
  18. My appologies, after consideration that is bob's proprietary information and it wouldn't be right for me to pass it around. Sorry
  19. The reason I said low power factor is that since you only have to make 160 in IPSC for major you'll probably be running the gun close to 165 pf. In the US we have to make 165pf so most of us are probably running more like 170ish (I usually load closer to 174 to get the gun to track the way I want it to) to be safe. With my guns different powders seem to require loading to different power factors to get the dot to track well. That seems to mostly relate to the burn rates of the powders and how much gas they produce. SP2 is probably the slowest powder that I have found that will make make major in a 9x19 loaded to major so I would expect it to work the comp a bit better at a lower pf... Having said that all guns are a law unto themselves, and there are other factors like spring rates, shape of the pin stop that impact the way the gun cycles. Coco is right try several things till you find what works for you.
  20. Since you are in europe try to get some Nobel Sport SP2. It should work well for you even at low power factor with that comp.
  21. Presuming it isn't worn out (ie it will still make major, no cracks, doesn't rattle too badly) and was built by a reasonable smith that is a pretty good deal. For mag holders I use the same cr speed pouches that I use for sti mags as well. Try it out and see how it fits your hand, for me it fits better than an sti/sv but that isn't universal. Mine have served me well for years. If you shoot it for a while and don't like it I doubt you'd have any trouble selling it for what you paid for it.
  22. For the last several years I have been using a Meopta K-dot 1-4x. It is a true 1x and has a daylight visible dot for close stuff. On the high end 4x is enough to engage targets out to 400ish.
  23. Since I start with once fired brass I always case-pro before I shoot it the first time so that they all start consistently sized. My brass doesn't usually get loaded more than twice (shoot it in practice, pick it up then reload it again for match use and leave it.) When I first started shooting 9mm major I loaded several batches 4 times to see if there was any problem with it and don't recall any difficulty with sizing it. I suspect that may be a result of processing it with the case-pro before starting the process and a fairly tight chamber.
  24. I don't think it could be cost vs benefit (at least not completely ). Many illuminated variables are as expensive or more expensive than dots plus a magnifier.
