  1. Guys we all know that a 10 round .45 mag will not fit into the box. A 9rd .45 mag will. So will a 10 rd .40 mag. FTDR, I hope to make it to the sharpshooter level some day. Are you a marksman like me? I am very inexperienced at this IPDA game. Did I spell that right? Played around with my STI 2011 today at lunch. Finally got the slide to drop 100% of the time, like a Glock, without having to touch the release. I played around with the .45ACP in SSP and ESP just to ruffle some of the purists feathers.
  2. TL, the mags I use hold 9 rounds of .45 or 10 rds of .40. Guess now that I think about it I am more of an experimenter than a gamer. OTOH some would say anyone, not using full power loads in CDP, ESP and SSP, is a gamer. A full power CDP load has a 190-200 PF. My Glock 23 carry load has a 180 PF.
  3. FTDR, that's the same split time I can get with a Kimber 1911 shooting a 200 gr at 650 fps. Either you are old and slow or I am fast enough. Was not comparing a Glock to a 1911, just pointing out that one cannot pull the trigger faster than the slide will cycle whether shooting a Glock or 1911. The issue is some will not like the feel of the recoil cycle from one load to another. Shall we leave it at that or argue more?
  4. FTDR, I have a couple of bucks that says you can't do .06 splits. Shall I get the timer out and take your money? Never had any bullets bounce off steel, but a few have failed to go through two layers of cardboard. I use a tangent sight for those long 15 yd shots. Tightloop, if you knew how much of a gamer I am you would realize I know by heart every single word in the IDPA rulebook. The slide on a .45 1911 moves plenty fast with 200 gr bullets at 650 fps. The only real downside is having to use a 10# spring. The light spring will magnify any feeding issues.
  5. I can't seem to find where it says in the rule book I can't use extended mags. BTW there is no such thing as "waiting on the slide". I had a Glock do a 4 round burst once shooting some 128 pf loads. Just happened to be checking my draw times when it happened. The splits were in the .06-.07 second range.
  6. That would have been Stage 1, 3, 5 and 6 at the Miss. Match.
  7. I may play around with it again after the Alabama Match in April.
  8. R&G is a stage that can have more than one way to shoot it. I love them. Makes you think. Any stage I design will have a minimum of 17 rounds. I don't care for low round count stages. Folks come to shoot. Never heard anyone say "That match just sucked. I had to shoot way too many rounds". Audrey and I liked the Miss. Match. That is she liked it except for the one stage that cost her High Lady. How did Billy V. drop 32 points on Stage 8? That was the kneel and shoot stage. BTW she has picked out the recipient for next year's Sand Bagger Trophy. Let's see he missed moving up to CDP Master Class by .07 sec.
  9. Let's see now, 2011 STI in 45ACP, 200 gr SWC at 650 fps. Start the stage with 11 in the gun. How about a single stack .45 ACP 1911 starting the stage with 10 in the gun. Hmmmm. Only a low life gamer would use a set up like that.
  10. Stacking toothpicks maybe? Would it be legal to tape your right eye shut? How about just use a bit of Super Glue?
  11. How do we know he does not put tape on his glasses when not shooting? He may do it every day if he is trying to train the other eye to be dominate. What about those that have to use the little arm band due to "tennis elbow"? Should an SO make them take that off and shoot in pain? As stated before "Where has all the common sense gone". If an SO is that anal he needs to find something else to occupy his time. Stacking tooth picks maybe? What am I thinking? I am the SO that will never hand out a Procedural for "dumping" rounds.
  12. Cy, you will come back to the Glock camp. Remember our conversation about the STI?
  13. I guess you guys are going to tell me that my Glock 35 with a 1 lb trigger and 125.1 PF loads is a "competition only" gun. Well what about my G21 in SSP sending a 230 gr bullet screaming through the cardboard (most of the time if it is not too thick) at 560 fps. Please don't call my .40 STI 2011 with 125 PF loads a competition only gun either. I consider myself to be an IDPA Purist.
  14. Where has all the common sense gone? All this sport needs are more Range Nazis. SOs that are that picky need to get a life. 80% of the folks I know that shoot IDPA use a "competition only gun". IDPA is just a game. Repeat, just a game not training. If I see someone like your large friend making a good effort to use cover but is challenged by his body type then he will never get a call from me. I could care less if someone puts tape on his glasses. If that allows him to out shoot me then I just need to practice harder. Tape on the glasses can be a hindrance also. Cuts down on your field of vision. SOs that make calls like that are usually a little short between the ears and other places.
  15. I just call it the "nose". Try one of Lone Wolf's 3.5 connectors. It is 4 to 8 oz lighter than a Glock or Scherer. If you want a really short crisp 1911 type pull use a modified trigger bar an an 8 lb connector. I have done a few. Yields a crisp 3 lb pull.
  16. Just mix a little car wax in with your media and you won't have to use One Shot.
  17. 1911s are a whole different animal. It really boils down to what length your gun will feed. I used 38 Super 10 round mags when I had a 9mm. Those pesky little tapered cases can be a real pain. I am a little suprised folks need as much Titegroup as they have stated. They must be loading really long. My wife's G34 makes PF with 3.0 gr and a 147 plated bullet OAL is 1.135". Her practice load is a 125 gr lead Valiant bullet with 3.5 gr. Load goes 1060 fps. The 147 gr bullets are much softer shooting than the 115-125 gr bullets.
  18. Glock 35 for me, G34 for wife. Working on a STI 2011 in .45ACP for ESP. Hmmmmm 200 gr SWC at 650 fps.
  19. I tend to use a FO front a little differently. I tried one of the thin ones and hated it. Spent too much time trying to get the sights aligned. I use a fairly large FO rod. I set my guns up where I use the FO like an electronic dot. I just put the dot in the center of the target. The dot fills most of the rear notch. If I can see all of the dot then my sights are aligned. No problems with long distance shots. Shot some clay pigeons the other day at 60+ yds. Just cover the pigeon with the dot and pull the trigger.
  20. A real gunsmith would drill a hole through the sight and slide then just break off the drill bit. Don't worry if some is sticking through the slide. It will wear a groove in the barrel after a few shots. Did I hear slot car? Boy does that bring back memories of the 60's. I made tons of spending money rewinding those motors.

    Sight Tools

Been using a brass or nylon drift for decades. Never had a problem. One key is to have a very sturdy vise.
  22. You may be loading your rounds too short. I have seen some 9mm Glocks that had to be loaded out to 1.150"-1.160" to get 147 gr cast bullets to shoot well.
  23. I can see this molehill getting larger by the post. If I am the SO I check the popper setting every three or four shooters. All it takes is resetting the popper and tapping it with your hand. I have never seen anyone "calibrate" the popper with a gun. Total waste of time IMO. Most poppers I have seen have worn out pins and no lock nuts. If the ground is soft the angle will change anyway. My wife and I shoot either an IDPA or IPSC match every weekend. It is a total non-event. Geez just set it where it takes a light push to knock it over. Jim, what stage was that? My 125.0000 pf loads took everything down. If it was the one with the two dropping walls the problem was not how it was set. There was not enough slack in the cables. You need a little slack so the popper can start falling. The only time I can recall asking for a re-shoot was at Hartselle. Remember the "Boat" stage. They used two of the funky flopping steel targets that they have. I hit one three times with a 200 gr .45ACP bullet screaming along at 650 fps. I have that on video. You can hear the pings.
  24. One of the Brownells STI mag wells will fit into the box. I have one. Catalog # 823-105-001 in SS. The blue one is a little cheaper. One of the guys at STI told me the 126mm mags would fit into the box. You might want to double check. One of my older Brownells catalogs shows a "Duty" SVI .45 mag that holds 12 rounds and a "Standard" mag that holds 13. This would lead me to believe that one is a 120mm and the other a 126mm.
  25. With 3.0 gr of Clays and a 180 gr plated bullet loaded to 1.135" I got 775 fps out of a G35. I get the same fps with 3.2 gr of Titegroup.
