Pulling hammer back with gun in holster

I can't see why you would cock the hammer while the pistol is in the holster. Seems awkward.

Is there some benefit?

It is because grandpa used to do it?

Is it just because rules don't prohibit it?

I'm guessing so you could do a dry-fire draw at make ready without removing the gun from the holster, cocking it, and returning it to the holster. Probably just an attempt to save a few seconds.

Oh...

Looks like I stumbled upon another difference between IPSC and USPSA.

IPSC Rules:

8.7.1 Competitors are prohibited from taking a sight picture and/or dry firing prior to the Start Signal. Violation will result in a warning for the first occurrence and one procedural penalty for each subsequent occurrence in the same match. Competitors may, while pointing their firearm directly at the ground in front of them, adjust electronic sights.

Indeed. When our state hosted the IPSC Nationals in 2009 Procedurals were the order of the day.😂 I literally gave warning, shooter holstered then drew to a sight picture again.😂😂 Old habits die hard.

Last ipsc match I shot, last stage was all half targets, one shot each, I took a sight picture, the R.O. freaked out, gave me a hard time about it, i told him to calm down, give me my warning and if he had a problem,  call the RM.

Also pointed out some targets that weren't pasted, he said that was his job to worry about not mine,  I said get em pasted so I can shoot.

Some people take it way too seriously,  it would be a warning in IPSC 1st time, then a procedural 2nd time.

there was a douche at my club a few years ago that would cock the hammer on people's gun in their holster, then they would have to go to the safe area and drop the hammer.

I would 10.6 that guy the first time, if he ever did it again I would invite him to never return

We do what we "always" do.

Like the only time in recent years when we had a stage where you started with magazine inserted but chamber empty.

The first time?

I have had it done to me, I think it is stupid and out of place, but application of 10.6 is fuzzy and you could also state that being Nurse Ratched with a timer is "behavior likely to bring the sport into disrepute". After he/she is told not to do it again then a repeat offense would be an easy call, otherwise the punishment might be closer to a 10.6 violation than the cure.

Yes first time, that is the type of behavior that absolutely would bring the sport into disrepute. hey go shoot USPSA they are very safe but sometimes people will jack with your holstered gun but hey you don't get disqualified so its all just in fun? I don't think so.

Anyone that thinks F-ing with someones holstered pistol is funny, needs more than a polite suggestion, a 10.6 DQ gives them the message that, that type of behavior is not and will not be tolerated.  Just like we don't give a shooter that breaks the 180 a polite suggestion to not do that again.

We can agree to disagree. I think you never want to see match officials make a mountain out of a molehill.

I know the immediate dq call would not be consistent as I've seen the issue while working a level 2 and a very experienced match official (that everybody knows) told me to escort the shooter to a safety table and that was that, problem solved, no drama, everybody get back to shooting. I think inconsistent opinion calls are tough on the reputation of all shooting sports.

I agree that a legitimate safety violation not subject to opinion does not merit a warning.

To me this has nothing to do with person who's hammer has been cocked, that situation is directly covered by the rules and the remedy is as you described.

The person cocking someone else's hammer, I have a huge problem with and will make that clear to them to the extent the rules allow, and I firmly believe that includes a 10.6

I agree on not messing with other competitors guns, but....a long time ago at a range far away.....small club match had a stage with an unloaded gun start, magazines on belt.  The shooter was one of the usual suspect jokers, the timer goes off, he has a lightning draw and the magazine is in the gun the split second the gun is horizontal....and the magazine falls out and lands on the table.  He grabs another magazine, same result.  After several tries to seat a magazine, he tilts the gun and looks down the magazine well and finds a Feminine Napkin product stuffed into the magwell.

To this day only one person knows who did the deed, but for a long time at every match that had an unloaded start, there was a line at the safe table of people checking their magwells for stray Feminine Hygiene products.
