HerdThinner
I was curious what this piece is called on the rear of the slide. Thanks in advance.
Hi-Power Jack
A green, squiggly line .... Sorry, cheap shot. Hell, I don't know either - can't wait for an expert to tell us what it is.

perttime
And the purpose is to keep your thumb away from the slide. Not just to protect your thumb but to prevent malfunctions that could result from contact during the cycling of the pistol. I have not found a need for one yet. FunkyTownAggie
It’s just a thumb shield. It’s Not attached to the safety at all. TennJeep linked it above already. Here it is. http://www.1911store.com/thumbguardbcg.aspx rereading - RePete above was emphasizing what a thumbshield safety vs what the op was asking about which is just a krebs thumbshield. blfuller
EGW makes one that is integral with the plunger tube. It would require removal of the plunger tube and the grip would need to be inlet.
pskys2
Pachmyr (I think or was it swenson?) used to make a simple stamped steel thumb shield that slipped over the top LH grip screw bushing. No longer in production, but others that replace the plunger tube are made and at least one company makes a thumb safety with a shield attached. Used one for a few years, finally took it off though. troupe
EGW model is much stronger for the 1911 design. The one in the pic were prone to crack if much pressure was applied against them and they could be push hard enough to still rub the slide. If that was the case, then there was to much pressure, muscle tension being applied by the hand anyway. Great idea, and it worked for many people.
