GregInAtl
I have a a stainless Colt XSE Government model. I let a friend do a trigger job on it and now it has an idiot scratch on the frame. The obvious answer would be tell my friend to fix it, but he did me a favor with the trigger job (plus some other work he did for it, shoots great btw). I would feel kind of bad asking him to fix the scratch since he did me a favor, so I would rather try to fix it myself. Can the idiot scratch be buffed out, It's a pretty light scratch. Postal Bob
If its all stainless, you should be able to, depending how deep it is. Start with something mild like flitz, and work your way up to more abrasive if needed.
Studlee
Had a Para stainless with idiot scratch also. Used a dremel tool with buffer wheel. Used the red/brown compound that came with the kit. Took it right out.
Toolguy
If it's on a brushed finish you can rub it with a ScotchBrite pad (lengthwise) and it will be all one uniform finish again.
praff
Or just shoot that sukka til it has scratches all over it!!!!!
Mturnbull333
I don't think I own a gun without scratches but that first one always turns your stomach, I say get over it now it's official ya race ready gun, shoot the heck out of it and have fun! tbarker13
There's something about that particular scratch that's really annoying. I'm happy to have my guns look beat-up from being used. But the idiot scratch just says: I suck at putting my gun back together.
Jeff F
I would not involve my friend. It's a scratch, your bound to get others as you shoot it. If it bothers you that much, I would do it yourself.
alexmsmith12
I have one 1911 with the scratch, can't stand it. A guy working on a pistol and leaving an idiot scratch... Scary combo. Buddy or not, he should step up.
jcc7x7
Super fine emery then blend it with scotch brite go easy to find out what you need to do IT'll blend in I go over my whole gun at the end of the season
bountyhunter
You're really lucky it's stainless. You can buff it up as fine as you want. For a brushed look, 600 or 800 wet/dry paper and oil works well. Make sure to keep the lines straight. Scotchbrite pads work too. I mirror finished the flats on the slide on my stainless Para when it was new. Edited April 22, 2014 by bountyhunter
steviesterno
um, maybe I'm the one to say it. But if your friend didn't know how to put the gun back together, what makes him think he can do a safe, quality trigger job? might want to really check out the safety stuff before you start messing with it. A 45 on full auto with a stock is really fun. A run away at a match is scary as hell.

40S&W
If you want to make sure the complete stainless finish matches, get the gun bead blasted to a satin finish.
jmbaccolyte
Your friend may not have done a good job on the trigger and we know that he caused an "idiot mark", but he's your friend. I'd say never mention it to him and decide whether to live with he scratch or refinish the pistol. Just my $.
Brassaholic13
He's not that good of a friend, or the OP wouldn't be asking.

MegaCleanCab
I have a Kimber that was given to me with an idiot mark. I feel the same way about that particular scratch and that is that it screams look at me I do not know how to properly assemble my gun. I have thought of fixing it but the frame was coated a sniper gray and I do not want to pay to have it refinished. Thanks
Sasquatch
Or just shoot that sukka til it has scratches all over it!!!!! Yeah, that. Adds character.
camocarmen
It's a tool. More scratches mean that I use it, the more I use it, the more that I know I can trust it. And being able to trust a gun is love. Sure, an idiot mark isn't "use", but it's still a tool. Lots of good ideas for refinishing
