Toto, we're not in S.F. anymore

At a property management office in Reno, Nevada, an agent asked me when I was planning to move. I said as early as September 30. He said that's when he was leaving for his big annual hunting trip, Hungarian partridge and chukar. When I mentioned that I, too, participated in ballistic pasttimes, he began pointing out the good and bad gun shops. And he recommended a safe company that could put me in touch with a safe mover.

At the last home I looked at, I mentioned my need for a large garage for my three dirt bikes. Instead of hearing, "You mean those loud, dirty machines that tear up the earth?" I was enthusiastically directed to the nearby trails and taken to the trailhead. Looking in the open garages of the neighborhood I saw various internal-combusion toys and knobby tires galore.

You probably have no idea of how unusual and encouraging this was to me. I feel like one of god's chosen people making the exodus to the holy land.

I long ago made plans for Nevada. I'm just on hold with it. (I frankly have to wait until my mother dies. I'm not leaving her without responsible help in her present absurd circumstances). Nevada is my compromise between Norththern California and the Pacific Northwest... but hopefully a little drier.

Erik, you lucked out.

No sense in getting a Nevada carry permit now and then paying for the address change later. (Note: anybody--even Californians--can get a NV CCW, but you have to take the class in NV.) Main reason for the permit is to bypass NCIC when buying guns and frames; fill out the 4473, flash the CCW, and exit with new gun. But I've been having trouble finding a certified instructor for the class. The Washoe county sheriff has a CCW web page but they don't provide a list of who's certified.

Lynn, nice list. LOL at #6. There are drawbacks, of course. The main problem I've been worrying about lately is the lack of good food. No Henry's Hunan (Chinese) or Pakwan (Indian) or taquerias. There's gotta be good Mexican food there somewhere.

P.S. I sold a cubic butt-load of .40 and .45 brass today. Didn't sell all the buckshot I was offering. I'm going to plan a special day at the range for blasting all the ammo I don't want to take with me.

I long ago made plans for Nevada.  I'm just on hold with it.

I just counted and I've only ever been to 17 States (CA, NV, WA, OR, AZ, NY, GA, FL, MN, WI, VA, DC, MD, KS, IL, MO & TX), and some more frequently than other, but I always thought that if I ever moved to the USA, Nevada (probably Las Vegas environs) would be my home. Second choice would be TX or FL.

At the other end of the scale, NY comes right after Iraq :P

Not sure exactly why I favour NV, but I suspect that the good climate, reasonable CCW laws and the good times I've always had in Las Vegas have been the major influences.

I bet you could find some primo fixer uppers in FL right about now. :(

You will be taking a step down in the cuisine department, but James is right about the buffet’s being the best deal. Just remember that it’s the mark of quantity, not the mark of quality that you will typically find. The Nugget seems to have the better food and more consistency than the other places I have tried.

Say what you will, the food is definitely better down here in “the city“. If you start jonesing for some “real“ Hunan, or some Dim Sum, or some good Italian , remember it’s only a three hour trip down, or I could bring a care package up for you when I come up that way for matches. BTW, stay away from anything called Sushi up there.

Are you kidding? Friday night all-you-can-eat sushi is awesome. (Any Area 1 takers?) Just stay away from the casino buffet sushi. I had some in Vegas.

James, hook me up because I will be a dual resident for a month after this weekend. The sooner I get certified, the better. I'm dreading putting up with 9 hours of some tactibilly schmuck teaching me how to shoot.

<fire engines going by right now--I can't wait for the desert silence>

"All you can eat" and sushi should never be used in a sentence that close to each other. Good sushi is expensive 'cause it needs high quality fish; all you can eat requires low cost ...

All you can eat sushi => bad sushi.

Yes, I am a sushi snob B)

Eggs Ackerly!

Yes, I am a sushi snob

So am I.

I will only eat at sushi houses run by someone who is very skilled at their art. I will not buy pre-packaged sushi plates at supermarkets either.

The best food I have ever had in Nevada hands down was at a little Basque place in Elko last year. There seem to be a number of Basque restaurants in small northern Nevada towns and the several I have tried have usually had the best food in their respective towns.

If you want something really tasty in northern Nevada, head on out to Winnemucca for a BBQ pork sandwich at the Flying Pig. The rib meat sandwich is my favorite, but the sliced pork loin one is also really good. Great coleslaw too.
