  1. If you got one of those barrel facing cutters from Brownells and re-crowned the barrel back .050 you'd be good to go. Might have to cut the slide face back the same amount to match (depending on how far the barrel sticks out of the slide now) but you could do that with a flat piece of thick glass and some 100 grit wet or dry sandpaper and water. Not that I already have too many projects in the safe, but I thought a Commander-sized SS Division gun built on a Caspian race ready recon (railed) frame and matching slide with as many bells and whistles as Caspian will cut into the frame and slide, a Schuemann or Bar-Sto or KKM bull barrel and all the other goodies that would normally go into such a build would be a toy to play with at our local matches. Side note question: Is KKM still in business? I never did get the barrel I ordered online for one of said safe projects, or any answers to online queries.
  2. Let the snickering begin...but she works good and I've won the division at a coupla matches so far, so there!
  3. Boyt hardcase with the big long shackle Master combination locks (which I've forgotten the combination to...of course) through the lock points. Pretty secure, but it sure cost me a pretty penny having to check three bags coming back from the Nationals.
  4. Nicky Beans 100% Kona from Costco...the price will sucker punch you but the taste will have you hooked worse than any street drug.
  5. Keep an eye on the weather when you go, Jimmy, winter is when we get big storms, flash floods and monster surf on the northern and western shores of all the islands...and especially Kaua'i, home to "the wettest spot on earth."
  6. That would have to be my answer too. Excellent choice! I agree, and I could be packed it 30 minutes If you guys included Maui in your all expenses paid trip to Hawaii, you could even shoot a match with us.
  7. Or you can spring for an SV Tri-glide that has the tabs to hold it aligned in the grip.
  8. You might want to ascertain KKM availability...I've had a .45 bushing barrel on order since February.
  9. Well, from the other side of the taxpayer fence, I'd be more than happy to check off a box on my tax forms that said something like "Would you like $5.00 (or better yet a write-in amount) to be directed to the Budget for Auxiliary Military Marksmanship training? This will not increase your tax nor lower your refund." Heck, I'd even pay into it if it did increase my taxes. I'd even pay for deer hunts for service members if they could show it would improve their recon and land navigation skills. That would sure beat the hell out of paying for some of the more outrageous boondoggles that the defense budget gets hit up for. The 40 billion spent on bases and incinerators in Afghanistan that won't ever be used comes to mind as a recent example. I was also a member of my state's Army NG rifle team back in the 80's and we not only got free ammo but a trip to compete at a Western States NG rifle match in California, can't remember whether it was at Ord or Camp Roberts. Might have been state money, but still was a federal facility and we were on state tdy as I recall. There was also a Captain from the 25th Infantry Division who used to shoot with MPPL in Honolulu and he knew of support money he could've gotten if he could just have gotten enough other soldiers interested enough to form a team. He was kind of bewildered that he couldn't get any of his lieutenants or sergeants interested, but this WAS back in the 80's/90's and practical shooting wasn't as high profile as it is now. That kind of support may not be available now, though. I would also surmise that it would be very much up to local commanders: for a couple years MPPL had use of the Puuloa rifle ranges (USMC) to hold their USPSA matches back in the time frame mentioned above because the commander thought it would be a good idea for military and civilian shooters to interact. The above mentioned Captain I only remember his first name was Max) may have had a hand in helping MPPL to gain access.
  10. Slide Glide Light or #1 on the locking lugs, slide stop and bottom lug lock-up surfaces, mainspring housing bore and top of cap. 50/50 mix of Militec and Mobil 1 5w20 on the rails, the flat surface in the slide where the disconnector cut is, link, barrel and bushing, full length guide rod (if you're using one) and the fire control bearing points - sear and hammer pins, sear spring center leaf (where it contacts the disconnector), and the hammer strut pin.
  11. Welcome to the slightly crazy but always fun Benosverse and USPSA. I'm sure you'll find a lot of help for your new passion here in these pages. Make sure someone shows you the secret handshake.
  12. That's great news...glad she's doing so well...best wishes for your future together.
  13. I SHOULD'VE done what I had originally planned and gone dawn patrol after locking my stuff up at the range...surf was small fun stuff and the conditions were perfect. And one of my favorite spots is across the highway from the range.
  14. Rear ended two guys when they stopped to make a left turn into that badly placed entry/exit from Ma'alaea Harbor, the one by Buzz's Wharf. And yeah, I was checking the surf instead of paying attention. Didn't even get the guys' names, 'cause MPD took our info separately. They weren't injured either, thanks be to any and all deities, happy chance or any random angels that were about.
  15. OK, not the actual wrecking of it, but being able to to type this out at home and no injuries save a bit of a sore shoulder blade. And being here to remind you guys that when your wife tells you to drive carefully as you're out the door for another trip to the range to stop and LISTEN for a change. Still made it to the range for some sighting in work with two friends from work (yes they stopped at the scene when they reached it) and went and got some of Bruddah Willy's Sticky Ribs after I got back home so the day wasn't totally ruined. Police officer wasn't even fazed about me telling him I had five guns and all the accompanying accessories in the truck. I am kinda pissed off that I bozoed so big time. My wife is still half convinced this was just a ploy on my part to get back into a bigger truck. I am so wounded she would even THINK such a thing... Did I mention I REALLY like that airbags work? Anyway tomorrow will start the stuff I HATE, insurance claims, renting something until I can get another ride (maybe I WON'T get that bike just yet), finding out I can't afford another new vehicle...and so forth and so on. But I'm really glad to be here to remind you guys that it only takes a moment's inattention to step in front of that bus. Don't step in front of that bus. You might not be as lucky as me. (trying to call the insurance co from the range) A hui hou, Gino
  16. Update: I'm baa-aaaack. I guess that wasn't that long of a break. But between my last post and now there have been three south swells where I got a few good waves...important for a Cancer to get in the water y'know. Shot the last three matches this month with the Open gun and still sorta sucked the first two, but there were flashes of !wow! that was a good run here and there. The last one today would count as an "achievement" in one of my youngest son's video games: Shoot an entire match with no misses or penalties. Finished 2nd overall, first in Open and I'm going to take it even though I was the only one shooting Open . Haven't done that well in a long time and it sure helped dispel the last of my funk. Also bought a new toy, one of those Taurus 1911's that they gussied up with the gold accents (hey! it was chea...erm...inexpensive, relatively) that I've already dubbed "The Pimp Gun" but have had fun seeing how much of a silk purse I can make out of a sow's ear, will post pics in the "Single Stack Elitist's Club" thread when it's done. Already thinking of putting together a mild "because it's legal" Single Stack Division gun: railed Commander with a bull barrel. Aches and pains and sucky situation at work remain but at least life is interesting again. Thanks for the kind words from Jon and Ray and Bamboo. A hui hou, Gino
  17. Resurrecting an old thread...first one that came up in the search.... OK, so I'm starting to lose the feeling...for getting up at 0-dark-thirty on Sundays as well as the rest of the week...for two hours of set-up (if I get there on time even!) and another hour and a half of tear down for maybe two minutes of shooting and that was TOO SLOW...for watching my name fall further and further down the results list and knowing most of that's my own fault...for trying to cope with a body that's not 23 or 30 or even 45 and knowing how many would roll their eyes at 56 (how come everything's starting to go now?)...for even posting ANOTHER one of my complaints on here instead of trying to contribute something useful. Sometimes I feel like selling all the competition stuff, keeping the two 20 gauges (don't even want to put up with 12 gauge recoil anymore) and just shooting clay sports...where you show up, shoot, pay for how many rounds you shot afterwards and bag. 'Cept I help load the traps and pick up hulls there too, so I'm not being a total scrub, but it fits the amount of effort I want to put into "having fun" these days. Heck, I don't even want to go out unless it's like close to "perfect" nowadays y'know; light off-shores, waist to head high with an occasional overhead set, makeable bowl sections and a barrel or two. And I used to surf ANYTHING before. Maybe I need to run away back to the quarry department 'cause these six-day-ten-hour-a-day weeks in the shop I could do ten, even five years ago but now...I dunno. It's nice having enough money again though. I've taken time off before, sometimes more'n a year or so...maybe I just need another sabbatical. Well if the guys who know me don't see me around here that much or at the range in the future it's not anything serious. I probably just need a break. Have fun, keep shooting, and I'll see you around again, hopefully sooner than later. Aloha, Gino
  18. What? You no ride 'em to work? I bet not with THAT parking lot. Funny I'm actually thinking of getting another bike...actually another KLR 650. I miss my old one.
  19. Superferry got hassled out of the islands awhile ago, flying is probably your only bet.
  20. Great time meeting and shooting with you Jon, any time you find yourself back on Maui we'll be here. And if you can make it out to Mama's Fish House...food's pretty good there.
  21. Well, all I know is that at our club many guys have been burned on a twelve shot stage by doing a reload in our Everything-10 matches.
  22. If you're going to use a Dremel, get some of their hard white felt bullet style bobs and their red polish. You might have to melt the polish a little to get it to stick to the felt bobs but they work great at polishing the chamber. Variable speed model is best run at about half max speed.
