  1. IMHO you will definately want a true 1X optic on the low side. Offsets aren't really even needed, but sometimes handy, depending on the COF. Lots of Burris Tac30 and MTAC's used in 3 gun. But offset irons will not bump you out of Tac Optics class, an offset optic and scope will, though.
  2. When your kids get older, then you have other issues if they are shooters, (or fancy themselves as shooters). There is a match next year I want to attend. $175 for me and $100 for juniors. Either I can go or I can take the boys.
  3. I'm helping make clean, reliable electric power today too! Light them up, the units run better under full load, and makes for an easier day!
  4. I just chopped my front sight off, dressed it up with a grinder, and boom! Low profile gas block. Mine runs great. I'm running a Troy Alpha rail on a Stag carbine.
  5. I have a JM Pro, thinking I would be in the game money ahead. I still have it and it runs great...now. But, for what I spent on the gun, and for a gunsmith to get it right, I could have bought a used M2 and an extention tube. The moral is, put at least as much attention into your shotgun as you would your rifle. Believe me, showing up at a match with a cerakoted, all tactical bells and whistles rifle, and a shotgun that isn't reliable, just is not fun.
  6. Margaret Thatcher naked on a cold day! Margaret Thatcher naked on a cold day! I'm having trouble with my hold as well. I set up some dry fire in my house, with a 1/4" dot 20 feet away. At 4X I'm having real trouble. I thought it was breath control, but my problem is the horizonontal hold. I swing back and forth. Now I'm worried if I take Bryan's advice, I may not even get the gun up anymore.
  7. I like a target with 1" grid marks. With my optic, I zero at 100 yards, use a smartphone ballistic calculator, and confirm at at least 200 yards. If the range has farther berms, I'll check there as well.
  8. Just finished "Point of Impact", by Stephen Hunter. It was a fun ride! So fun I just started the next book starring Bob Lee Swagger.
  9. As was said earlier, .40 minor is pretty sweet! I'm using an XDm 4.5 in 3 gun and USPSA production. I chose it simply because I walked into my LGS and thought it looked bada$$. Luckily, it was a solid choice for me. My advice is don't give up on the Glock quite yet, and invest in some blue hand loading equipment. (I bought a certain red progressive because I knew I could make it work, meh.)
  10. Yeah, I have thought about that too. I figured since I don't have an AR I'd take care of that first. I do have two shotguns, and one of em will be a dedicated 3 Gun shotty for the year. Next year I'll attend to the shotty better.A local dealer I was talking to tonight did just find a Gunbroker listing for a Stag Arms 3G for $1289. I think he said it would end up at $1350 or so out the door with shipping and transfer fee. Think I should jump on it? Most carbines around here are running from $850 (Windham Weaponry) to $1150 (Sig Sauer) so it ain't much more. That would be a solid choice. But that is my opinion. However, that or the Doublestar will be my next AR.
  11. I want to add, you can pick about any AR off the shelf, slap on an optic, and it's gonna run. But a shotgun? meh. Just don't get caught up in all the space gun AR stuff and neglect the ol' shotty.
  12. After shooting at Rockcastle in sub freezing temps last month, I'll just say I'm done shooting in the cold.....unless there is a match this month or the next.
  13. I'm mixed on this. I prefer the RO to let me make my own mistakes. For a new shooter, coach all you can. At the club level, it kinda depends on the shooter and their goals. Helping a good shooter out so they can place higher is different than helping a 78 year old out to have fun not bypass a target. I'll probably get some flames for that last sentence, but it's how I feel. But I know at one match I was RO'ing a buddy that was having a blazing run, but blew by a target. I probably would have been madder than he if I knew another shooter got coached on that stage. But generally, I'm not a fan of coaching.
  14. This^^^. Starting out you probably won't be outgrowing any AR soon, but but a Stag or Doublestar 3G will let you hit the ground running. Plus, there will be a lot less that you feel you need to upgrade than on a basic carbine.
  15. Another thing to consider with boots. If your boots fit just right with regular socks, your feet will freeze if you jam in extra thick socks. Better off wearing regular socks in that case.
  16. That crossed my mind. Nothing wrong with some prone that you have low crawl into!
  17. On the other hand, working the holidays kinda pays for my kids holidays.
  18. From my perspective, the money I would spend on a major would allow me to take my boys to 3 or 4 local matches. So a sure spot for more cash would be a sure way for me to look elsewhere. But I'll only shoot maybe one major, and then only if it is convenient. I have lots of local matches that provide plenty of action for someone of my meager ability.
  19. If you had a steel tube, maybe you could drill witness holes, if you just have to see it. But planning your stage is just a better idea. Even though it hardly ever works out how I plan, I like a tube that holds an even number of shells, as I primarily load 2 or 4. But if I have to make an extra shot, I just stuff until full anyway, and let the one that don't fit fall. And, if it holds more than I think it should, my plan is already screwed.
  20. Funny how perception is. For me, the JM Pro stock, or ergonomics is just right. And after Rose Action Sports did some magic on it, runs like a boss. Downside is I'm approaching trackhoe money invested. YMMV. But, try out several, and get the one that you like the best. We ask more of our shotguns than any other firearm, shooting shot, slugs, and buck, so why not invest at least as much as you would your AR?
  21. Won't be that bad. Most of us native Kentuckians have been wearing shoes and longhandles since Labor Day anyway.
