  1. Is it legal to use the hard plastic cases the firearm was sold in as the "hard shell" case with the proper lock? I have 4-5 of them and don't want to buy cases I do not need.
  2. That figures, no need to recoup any of the tax dollars we all put in. I actually started my competitive shooting with a Beretta (Actually the Taurus clone at first) and I still really like the platform. It shot good, balanced well, and got me by in my first year of IDPA shooting. Gave my first one to my son so he could get into the sport. Oh well, I will keep looking in the used ads and get one there.

    Red dot Screw Size

So I am at the range shooting the Bill Drill, and on the 3rd round, my dot come loose, and I mean loose. One of the screws that holds the dot to the CZC Custom Burris mount broke in two. I cannot seem to find the correct replacement screw locally. (No big surprise, picture the small Alaskan town in Northern Exposure). Can someone tell me the size and pitch of this screw so I can get a few, and a couple for backup. I can surely picture my self cleaning my CZ one late night in a decrepit motel room and send the parts flying.
  4. Last year I went from Limited 10 (I know, I know) to Carry Optics for two reasons. 1. LImited 10 is dead in my area, no one else shoots it. 2. My older eyes simply do not work well with iron sights anymore. Even though I intend to shoot the Desert Classic in SS, it will be purely for fun. 3. When the capacity change in mags went from 10 rounds to 140 mags, the fun was on. I am headed for super senior, and really enjoy the CO division. I always keep in mind when the results show up at a match, the spot I place in is completely irrelevant to anybody else who is not a senior in my division. I love the competition between my friends, but some shoot Open, some SS, and some Limited. There is really no formula to compare the divisions. Ii is just impossible to stack one division against the other to determine progress. I watch the PCC crowd, and shake my head. But to those who enjoy it, have at it. Changing to Open really does not improve us dinersoars, it does give us a different platform that is inherently more accurate, but does it make us better shooters? I would doubt it. We will only get slower, less able to acquire the dot, and find new body parts falling off at an alarming rate. To me, if you are enjoying the CO division, why spend the large amount of money to go Open? There is only one reason I would go Open. Daddy has a new gun, now that I can go with........
  5. Since the military is hell bent on moving over to the SIG platform, what happens to all of the Berettas sitting in the armorys? Does anyone know how these surplus firearms will be handled after the SIGs take over? I would like to buy a couple if the price is right, and the slide isn't as loose as some of the surplus .45 Colt 1911s we had assigned to our LE departments a few years back. (Some would even rattle.)
  6. I suspect its the bullet profile that is causing the issue. I have run into this several times, even from the same manufacturer who changed the coating. When you indicated certain types of brass fail more often and get the bulge, that is exactly what happened to me. The dies size everything equally, but the brass thickness is the problem I ran into. I admit the worst troubles I had were almost the opposite of yours, the Aquila cases, CBC, and S&B would almost always bulge. Try a different bullet and see if the problems persist or change. Then you will have a better idea of exactly where the problem is. I have ended up separating my brass and using different bullets for types of brass. One oddity I had happen was some 124 weight bullets had to be seated deeper then 147 because of profile differences. For my known failure brass I just went to 115 rounds with Autocomp or Longshot and blaze away.
  7. I was referring to a .40 caliber, I doubt you will shoot major in 9MM. If you do, well................. And a certain someone will have a bad discussion with you,,,,lol,,,lol.
  8. "on both the shooter and RO it seems. Competitors have a responsibility to know the rules of the game or where to find them. It isnt that hard. Also have a rule book in ur bag... Or some kinda electronic version in ur swipe swipe doo dad." This was just a local indoor match, very informal, and not USPSA. Certainly not a match to slow down the other shooters since it is indoors, in a cold building, with 20 plus shooters. I would have challenged this at a match for sure. I just wanted clarification of the rule I quoted. I was shooting around a barrel, but did not hit it or any obstruction.
  9. I have tried to buy just the extractor from Springfield, and they flat refuse to sell one. You have to send it back for service if you choose to do any work on it and find it does not operate correctly. That is my biggest gripe about Springfield, some replacement parts are nearly impossible to get. No extractors, no slides, and they can be real difficult to get in touch with. Good repair service though.
  10. Do NOT go too low with the spring weight, and fire full power loads. I managed to use an 11 lb spring only to chew up the guide rod end where it contacts the barrel lug. After contacting Springer it was relayed to me the slide will move too fast and tear the rod up. A fine time to tell me Lucille.
  11. At a match I was falling out of the shooters box, (possibly due to external shifting of some sort of extra body mass), and took my final shot which hit the edge of the scoring target. The RO called it a miss even though the round broke the perforation edge clearly. His explanation that it was a miss was there was no grease ring appearing on the perf edge where the shot broke it. Where in the rule book does it say a round that breaks the per must also contain a grease marking? There was clearly a grease mark on the target, it just did not appear on the perf edge. Rule 9.5.4 states "Radial tears will not count as score or penalty.", but is it the grease ring that determines that decision? I argued the rule states only the perf need be broken, there is no rule defining grease markings. Did I look at it wrong? It was just a fun match so no harm done, but I want to be sure I understand the rule fully before the start of next season.
  12. Try some Titewad with 2.8 and 230 rounds. The 200 grain at 3.4 was super fun to shoot also. I had a 12 lb spring, so you could reduce it further if you desired. I think too much lower with any powder you will find the brass does not seal well, which can lead to some strange readings like Garmil ran into. The only other thing that would concern me is getting the bullet stuck, but not knowing it is a squib.ts. Not a fun result........but it sure sounds like fun shooting production with a .45. Will certainly get you some commen
  13. My good friend had the same issue with .40 cal tubes for his Rock Island 2011. He had to file off some metal on the basepad to get them to fit.
  14. Thanks for the replies, time to clean it up and get some parts replaced. It was a balmy -2 degrees yesterday with about a 10 MHP breeze. Toasty warm, almost time to go swimming. The older I get the more the cold just creeps into my bones and joints and reminds me of every broken bone, surgery, and injury I ever had. Ahhh, the joys of hitting the golden years.............
  15. This was my first year of CO shooting with a CZ SP-01, and I need to ask, what do all of you CZ shooters replace on the gun after a full season of shooting? I'd say I have about 5-7K rounds in it, and I want to be in 100% shape for next year. I have the recoil spring and slide stop already, but what else needs replacing and is there any preferred maintenance steps to prepare for?
  16. I started with one in Carry Optics on a Glock 34, and it did not last 2k rounds before I returned it. The dot would just disappear for no reason. After some research on the Net, it seemed it was an inherent problem, which required re positioning ground tabs and cleaning the battery contact area. I returned it to the store I purchased it from, and they did not argue on the return. I am not using a dot that is that finicky. I have a Burris Fastfire which has been rock solid, and for my CZ I use a Vortex Viper, which has not failed once. Unless SIG has addressed the contact problem, well, there have been times between a large match, and two more smaller local matches where shooting that many rounds is not out of the question. I have enough to worry about without keeping track of a low round count and then fixing the same issue. I was quite disappointed in that kind of quality.
  17. The quiet PCC's are very problematic Yes, you can ratchet up the sensitivity, but at clubs such as ours with bays very close to each other, a loud open gun fired close can get registered. So, if the end of the run, and the next bays shooter has a gun that blows holes in the sky, what time is right? As an RO, it is really tough to make that call. I can see all types of "gaming" issues dreamed up by shooters to make this work to their advantage. There was a great thread earlier on this subject. The timer we use is meant for the total time, not a counter. I have already witnessed more then one argument over what time was "realistic", and again, that can turn into quite a subjective call, and can waste a lot of time on the range. There will be a boatload of RO interference reshoots should the shooter think he had a bad stage, and wants that reshoot. If an RO is right next to you getting the timer super close, I can see the accidental run over the RO oooppps. From all of the great training I have gotten from NROI and highly experienced RO's, asking the shooter where they will end up is not kosher. The RO's main job is to keep everyone safe. We are watching the trigger, fingers, 180's, AD's other shooters, and staying the hell out of the way. Add watching the movement of the timer display is adding yet another safety issue into the relm. It is not that difficult getting the correct position in steel, but chasing quick high speed USPSA shooters is another story. To my way of thinking, it should be incumbent upon the PCC shooter to provide the means of timer solutions if they know the carbine is known to cause missed times. We have shooters who do bring their own timers just for this. I admit there is no easy solution to this, but putting the RO in the position to get run into the ground is certainly less then desirable. It seems to me RO's have enough on the plate to run a stage as it is.
  18. I feel the answer is we are all human, and somehow we manage to screw things up. As an RO, the number of times I have been swept with a loaded gun by a 180 violation have been more then once, I have witnessed a shooter load and make ready FACING the wrong direction, and the list continues. As laz2011 points out, when anybody anywhere hands me a firearm, I want them to clear it, and I will do the same. The chrono stage is one of those where the RO has not witnessed any preparation of the firearm, therefore its condition is completely unknown. If there is an AD, it goes down range. You might ask how a live round got put in a holstered gun, well, I can think of one specific shooter who thought his SS mags were full, then had only 4 rounds, and he may or may not have thought the mag had dropped out prior to the hammer down command only to shot a round into the berm. As humans we do some of the strangest things, whether by confusion, or lack of attention, or God only knows how we manage to get into trouble. I am sure there is more then one shooter here can look back on a first marriage and wonder "how the hell did that happen".

    Mbx base pads

I have not used the MBX on my back up Gen34 in CO, but when I shot L10 using an STI, the MBX basepads are all I used, They went on and off super easy, fit perfectly well, and were a breeze to clean. They use a small blocking pin to keep them on the mag bottom. If they made them for CZ, I would have used them. Since they did not, I went with the TTI basepads, and they are very similar to the MBX system.
  20. "What he said. It comes down to personal preference and what works for you." I agree with the above statements, my SS/L10 Kimber which is stainless is set up with a red front fiber, and two green fiber dots on the rear. None of my other guns have this setup, even my back up SS/L10 gun has a red front sight, and blackened rear sights. Of course now that I have switched over to Carry Optics, the point is moot.......
  21. A strange trend has occurred up here in the frozen tundra. SS is actually making a comeback. Our matches run a bout 40 shooters, and it seems like we added 3-4 SS people. L10 is completely dead, and we have one revolver shooter. The folks who switched came from Limited and Open. The biggest gain was CO. PCC has a few fans, but I do not think it will get widespread acceptance around here. Seems almost like cheating. 60 rounds, a red dot, add a laser, no weak hand shooting, no need to draw, and really, just blaze away. Aiming is optional.
  22. This year I switched from Limited 10 to Carry Optics due to aging eyes. I am just a C level shooter, but I enjoy the sport immensely and love to compete. At the range this week I am focused on getting ready for the Western States Single Stack match in Feb. Got ye ol Kimber .45 (yes, I said Kimber), and started with Bill drills and the Dot torture test. Well, I shot like a Q class shooter with blinders. As I stood there wondering what was wrong with the 1911, I tried a few more rounds, and discovered the root cause of the issue. I had gotten out of the habit of shooting with my eyes focused on the front sight. I clearly was focusing as though I was trying to find the red dot and then acquire the target. It doesn't take long to change completely how your whole approach and system changes shooting different platforms. Jumping around between classes is not as easy as I had thought. That and getting old has given me a great appreciation of the training and ability to cross platforms and classes. We surely get ingrained in habits, both good and bad.
  23. The 3.2 load of Clays is fun to shoot, works like a champ in my Xdm.
