Why does WSF recoil less than power pistol at the same velocity?
mont1120 replied to Denny4's topic in 9mm/38 Caliber
I load both WSF and TG with my 147 MG and Blue bullet CO loads, and I cannot tell any difference between the two loads. When it comes to "perceived" recoil, I asked the same question a few years back in the 44/45 section, and the answer really lies in the combination of the physics surrounding gas, volume, weights, barrel length, and the relationships between all of them. Run a search in that section and there is an excellent article that really explains it. In the end, what YOU feel is the best recoil reaction will be what you choose. Science sometimes takes a back seat to human perception. -
This is my exact load also with Blue Bullet 147's. I go with 3.4 of TG with jacketed rounds. With my Shadow and an optics setup, I have plenty of time for the follow up shot since there is virtually no rise on the dot. As others have pointed out, your grip style will determine how you are able to get back on target. I have large hands so it is no issue, and with the weight of the CZ, recoil is really soft. My back up optic gun is a Glock 34, and I still prefer the 147. If you want to go with faster cycling, try the 135 grain round. I just ordered 2K of them to mess around with and test. They also work great for practice rounds with brass I will not use for competition such as Aquila, GFL, and A USA headstamp. I have found they load the lighter bullets without bulging the case beyond usability.

What's everyones favorite aftermarket glock trigger?
mont1120 replied to SconnieShooter's topic in Glock
I just shot a Gen4 G34 in a Glock match, 250 plus rounds on 8 stages, and my Zev kit performed flawless. I admit I am not even remotely a Glock fan, but with this trigger I have decided to use the set up in 3 gun also. It has the feel and performance of a custom installed Springer Precision kit in the XDm. Included with the trigger is the lightened Zev firing pin and competition cups. The other brands I have not used, but this is the only Glock I will have. Getting used to the way the gun sits in my hand is just not gonna happen. -
When you release the slide to chamber the first round it feels like there is resistance to load the round. The 2nd round in the mag got jammed pretty hard and I lost a lot of time clearing it. It almost feels as if the edge of the bullet is catching something. I should look at the polymer and see if it is dragging.

I use XDm's for 3 gun, and you will really enjoy the feel of the gun in your hand. I admit I bought a Gluck 34 MOS, but cannot get used to he feel of it. Even though CZ is now my CO platform, the XDm would be my back up if I had it in 9MM.

Really enjoying the switch to my CZ Custom Carry Optics platform (although I still despise the double action shot), and had a small issue this weekend with 135 grain Blue Bullets. I did check the OAL when reloading by using the barrel and the plunk test, and verified the rounds fit in the magazine properly. The rounds are all gauge checked and inspected. Presently I am sizing the 135 at 1.115, but it feels like it is hanging up slightly. Is anyone else using this profile round for their shadow, and if so, what is you OAL?

At what point is it not worth it?

Went to the Helena match, was OK EXCEPT for the deer that I hit. Now I tacked on 1K for a match. Now it was not worth it. -

1/2 an hour............ -
At what point is it not worth it?

In Montana our closest match is 2.5 hours one way. Tomorrow we leave at 4:30 AM to greet a 4 hour drive. Highways???? I've heard of them, what a concept. Between ice, snow, and the occasional deer or elk through the windshield, it is a relaxing effort in trying to find the one lone radio station to listen to half static, and trying to figure out where that one real lonely and pissed off highway patrolman is waiting to write you a really nice ticket. And just for fun, to attend one sectional match, it is 8 hours away. There is a whole lot of empty miles between cities up here. You guys are fortunate to have matches that close. I guess its the price to live in paradise...............??????? -
I wish I had gone with the larger MOA dot, do not buy the 3. I have both the FF# and a Vortex Viper, the Burris seems better designed since you can replace the battery from the top or the dot. I have found those that do not completely house the battery can come a bit loose, and the dot starts disappearing. Really sucks in the middle of a stage. Certainly CO is the most fun I have had shooting in years. I did start with a .40 Xdm, but went out and got a CZ. I think if I had owned a 9MM Xdm I would have stayed with the Xdm.

I just shot my first match with a CO modified Shadow from CZC, and I can promise you that you will not be disappointed with the Shadow platform. The comments from the oh so supportive peanut gallery at the match did garner more then one comment on how accurate the gun was. The trigger system was superb, balance was outstanding, and it ran with 100% reliability. Coming from the L10/SS divisions the first double action shot is really weird, but time will fix that. I'm unsure on the big differences between the Shadow and the S2, but the Shadow will do everything you want it to.

I believe if memory serves me correctly, any imported foreign part must clearly be marked from the country of origin. Some specific parts are exempt, but I think firearms parts meet the requirement. I think that import law is still in effect.

I own a STI Eagle in .45 and have used it two years for L10 and Limited, and love the gun. One of the selling points is I thought it was MADE and MANUFACTURED here in America. I am not a full fledged USA only buyer, and I buy what works. I have a Glock, 2 XDm's, and know full well where they are made. I see this forum posting, and I will say it does surprise me to think I may have been uninformed into paying more for a gun that is not really made here, but just assembled in the US. Here is the listing of STI on Wikipedia: "STI International, Inc., is a Texas based company that manufactures complete 1911 and 2011® handguns and parts for competition, duty and self-defense. It is most well known for its 2011® modular frame guns.Wikipedia" From the STI website "All current STI models are assembled and hand fit right here in Georgetown TX with the best parts available from around the world." To me, and I speak only for myself and how I personally interpret something, this smacks of slight of hand advertising. When you state your company "manufactures COMPLETE 1911 and 201 handguns" that seems to mean you make all the parts, or at least the major parts in your facility. Obviously the word "manufacture" means different things to different people. In defense of STI, the dictionary says to manufacture is to" make, produce, mass-produce, build, construct, assemble, " put together", create, fabricate, turn out, process, engineer." It does say put together. So, the answer for me is STI does not hide the fact they use imported parts that make up the important platform. I cannot find out where the slides are made. I just never thought one of the most important parts are from overseas. Anybody who buys custom high end guns using the STI as the basis for the frame are not buying a Cadillac, they be getting a Hyundai. Never assume anything........

Scared of getting beat by us CO cats I see, LOL...LOL Shooting a frame mounted red dot minor might get you last place with a comp in Open...........

I have used BENOS several times, never had an issue with the discount on any order.

I use a dovetail mount from Springer on my back up optics gun, a .40 XDM 5.25. I find no disadvantage using one over the milled frame unit. I always keep in mind open shooters are far above the slide and indeed they seem to be plenty accurate and the bore axis problem so many talk about does not seem to bother the open boys. Give it a try, low cost, and I think you will like CO, and may just use the dovetail mount.

I just got done working my stock trigger to get a 3.5 lb pull, and then the rules change. So back in goes my Zev trigger which is much better. I certainly want to work over the trigger guard undercut, but would like to see some more pics of how others do the work and how it should look when done.

+1 on the Springer Precision, use it on my .40 Open XDm, fun pistol to shoot.

I must incorporate that strategy in this years matches, then shoot the better gun the last three matches. This way the improvement in my scores and shooting will be superb....... That was a great quote for sure.

"Just wanted to make clear that while you can go DOWN in power factor, you can't go up. (You can switch the guns, but that is separate from power factor scoring.)" And this is why I asked the question, I know of one instance where a shooters .40 Limited gun went south, and he was not allowed to use a 9mm Limited gun as a switch in the match. He did explain he knew he would go minor, but the RM said that was too much of a change in firearm platforms. He was forced to shoot with a broken rear sight the rest of the match with the .40.

I am moving to CO this year, and had a ruling question on back guns at major matches. A few years back I needed to go to my back up gun at a major match, but that was a .45 L10 to a .45 L10 frame gun in 1911. Right now I plan on competing with a Glock MOS 34, but for arguments sake, the trigger breaks in half or whatever major issue could arise, and I come to you as the match RM and ask for a ruling for my back up gun, and whether or not it is acceptable. Right now my back up gun to the Glock is a .40 XDm 5.25 pistol with a sight mount red dot. Would this be considered a legal switch, or ruled to be ineligible to use? If it is not legal, why not? Both are striker fired. (assume for this thread an XDm is striker fired), the big difference would be the caliber. In my mind, there is no significant difference in the 9MM minor round or a .40 minor round. PF is PF. Certainly a Glock firing system is different then the XDm. Are there rules which define what is or is not acceptable differences?

Just tested side by side 135 grain and 147 grain bullets from Blue Bullets. I was surprised that I like the 135's better. I get the dot back on track better with the 135, and recoil differences are negligible. With Titegroup I used 3.2 for the 147, and 3.4 for the 135, and that put me at 135 PF, so you could go lower. This was in a Glock 34. CFE works really well also, and will be testing the old standby, 700X later this week. Try a air of sample packs from this company, and see which works for you, everyone feels and reacts to recoil differently.

Using the TTI +4/5, extremely happy with them. Easy to get on and off, simple to maintain and clean. I use Dawsons on my STI .45 tubes, but find I have issues getting the gate open when they get dropped in sandy like dirt. I will definitely stay with TTI's in the future.

I have followed this thread and am wondering why the question is so heated. Seems there are some really bad feelings between some shooters on the forum. Anyway, since I just started shooting a Glock Gen4 34 in Carry Optics, I find myself in need of an extended mag release button. I am left handed and have always used my left hand middle finger to release the mag. On the 34 it is difficult to get to the release since it is made so closely to the frame. After researching the rules, the official USPSA 2014 Rulebook, I had found this portion of the Production rules. On Page 83, Section 21.6, this is the quoted rule straight from the Rules book. "A factory/OFM magazine release which extends only the length of the magazine release may be used. A magazine release which provides a larger surface area (paddles, buttons) may only be used if it is an OFM part available on an approved model of gun. • Externally -visible parts from “custom shop” guns will only be considered “ OFM parts” if the custom -shop gun is on the NROI list of approved Production guns." I think, and I am not trying to offend anyone, this clears up the issue. Extensions are legal if this format is followed. A factory/OFM magazine release which extends only the length of the magazine release may be used

WST is certainly temp sensitive, Hodgdon they want can make any claim they wish too, (I want to add that other then the Nitro 100, I use Hodgdon powders for everything else). Having used WST for about 3 years in .45, I went to my first Nationals, where the wheels fell off. After the rear sight came off my Kimber and smacked me in the mouth breaking my tooth, I switched guns to my back up Springfield 1911. Had to go re-chrono the rounds, and almost, and I mean almost went minor with the same rounds. The Kimber chrono'd at 172 PF, but the SA came in at 165.00000, and thats because the bullet weighed 230.8. The only difference, (and yes the barrels were different), but the real difference was the temperature. The chrono with the Kimber was done at about 72 degrees under clouds. The SA was tested at about 98 degrees, and hot sun. Even if the SA barrel was close to being a smoothbore, the difference is just too great. I also saw the same kind of velocity loss the very next year, at the same place when my shooter friend went sub minor with his 9MM load. He had checked it in the north, and we shot in the hot desert where it failed. Heat causes WST to slow down, and unless we all got bad powders that year, nothing else could convince me more then actual results with me standing there.
