  1. Haven't seen the movie yet. The traiers were pretty interesting. A remember this book being discussed quite q bit in the early days of the BE.forum. It would be a very large undertaking to do the book justice in a movie, in my opinion. Present-day Hollywood is no Galts Gulch. It's interesting to see just how well Ms. Rand presaged current events.
  2. For those of us who continue to explore the waythrough our shooting, the idea of becoming part of popular culture is irrelevant. Let's not let ourselves become distracted by the bright lights and shiny objects along our path.
  3. Of course, as the Sig Lady just reminded me in a PM, we cannot go back in time. I started shooting local steel plate matches in 1985. We lived in our own little world. We were awed by the "skill" of people that weren't very good by todays standards. I wish I had done what you are doing now. Of course, my start into competitive shooting was back before Al Gore invented the internet. But, if it had been available, I would have logged on to BrianEnos.com. This place has been the source os so much fun, support, and resources, that it has made a huge difference in my progress in the decade that it has been available to me. Stick around, in ten years you'll know what I'm talking about.
  4. Those 3 pistols are my Caspian single stack. One slide is a .45, one is a 9mm, and one is an old Colt Ace .22 conversion with the floating chamber. My other pistols languish in the gun safe.
  5. I'm not sure what "from the ground up means" in this case. A full 1911 build can be accomplished with out a mill, unless you are planning to actually start with a block of steel and craft one from scratch. ATF will want you to do somw paperwork for that. This would certainly be a noble and enjoyable effort if it were undertaken for the sake of the build. I'm a shooter first and machinist second, so I've always built 1911's by starting with finished slides and frames. (I need to spend those hours practicing my shooting.) If you are planning to start with a bald slide and cut your own sight dovetails, Brownell's will have the endmills you need. They will be sized and shaped for different sight cuts, "Novak", "Bomar", ect. Doing a rear Bomar cut on a bald side is a fairly challenging and enjoyable piece of work. Let us know how you plan to do it. There are plenty of cool tools to buy either way. -Sam
  6. Hey, what's up with the Sig Lady?

  7. That Dorothy chick with the funky shoes and little dog was right. "There's no place like home".
  8. Just ordered "The Talent Code" from Samazon.com based on recommendations here. You guys have never given me a bum steer on a good read.
  9. "Looks at empty brass"....hmmm...and I thought "looks at target" was interesting.
  10. I thought they held the gun that way because..... that's how they found it the box.
  11. Man, that is so true, Dyno! Understanding the "why" is the part that interests me most. Why does my mind tend to seek some sort of "outcome" or "end", instead of enjoying the 10 feet where I am? I believe that this seeking is not the normal state of mind, but one that has been learned in the process of coming to adulthood in the culture I was raised in. Our society seems to run on seeking things. I hear so many people speak about freedom, while I see them forging their own chains.
  12. I've experienced this kind of let down a few times over the years. It may come from the realization that the win wasn't nearly as important as I made it out to be. I think Granny's post was spot on. If we make the shooting about reaching a specific goal, then where are we after that goal is met? It can be a lonely feeling. It's been much more enjoyable since I decided that my goal was to be part of the sport. This goal of being "part of the sport" encompasses many things. Now, I see matches as something to experience, kinda like a rock concert. With a different kinda smoke.
  13. Welcome the BE.com forums, Spindrift! (Great handle, I might add) And I can see Boston from my house too........ ......with Google Earth.
  14. He could graduate Magna Cum Loud, eh?
  15. Many shooting failures are rooted in doubt. At times I have let listening to others introduce some doubt before a stage. Not good.
  16. If it was easy, we wouldn't need to make it a general rule.
  17. Most new shooters obsess over the sight picture. Fast and accurate is the result of thoughtless action.
  18. Zdog, my point was that shooting a gun with special mods can sometimes become a barrier to overall progress. Sorry about your bike experience.

    NO JOB

It would be great to not work for the other guy. (big oil) But, I want to be working right up until the moment that I die.
  20. Sometimes, it's about adapting the gun to you. Sometimes, it's about adapting you to the gun.
  21. I've become more aware lately, just how much desire opposes the resident joy in most everything.
