they are nearly identical to winchester, same hardness, average velocity was about 5fps different but that's basically statistically identical, SD's were the same, I randomly mixed 50 magtec and 50 WSP in my Dillon primer feeder All went bang with a 1911 17lb mainspring, measured dent with a dial indicator and didnt see any difference. I would buy them if they were cheaper than Winchester.

They have proven hard as hell for me.

I bought a few case last year.

I first started using (trying) them at the beginning of this year's shooting season. I had traded into a Glock 34 and took my reloads...with the Magtech primers...to our local steel challenge match. Out of 25 shots for record (5 shots per run x 5 runs) on the first stage, I had 12 light strikes.

I had traded into this G34, and hadn't had it apart to see what trigger parts were in it. I replaced the striker spring with a new, standard part. The one that was in there was a reduced power striker spring.

I still had plenty of the Magtech primed ammo loaded up. I regulated it to practice/small matches. With the new striker spring in the Glock, the incidence of light strikes went down, but was still an issue. I'd say it went to about 1 incidence per every 50-75 rounds (a few a match).

Once that batch of ammo was used up, I either shot with Winchester White Box or with reloads using Federal primers. I didn't have any light strikes while not on the Magtech's.

I recently loaded up another batch of them. Sure enough, light strikes showed up again.

I like them for practice though. They give me the the chance to practice malfunction drills...which I wouldn't normally get. And, they were cheap (I got mine early last year...even cheaper).

Oh, let there be no doubt...I would preach to GOD about the need to fully seat primers. Shallow primer seating is not the issue. And, this Glock's striker looks good too.

FWIW...Anderson is using them in his Caspian open gun without any reported problems so far.

I tried the small rifle primers out of my .38 Super and had nothing but troubles. 5 to 10 or more light hits per magazine. Odd thing was the primers were fully seated in a cleaned primer pocket but when I would try and shoot them they wouldn't go off the first time (showing good primer hits) but every time they went through second time they would go off without fail. I got rid of the rest of them, thankfully the guy at the store agreed they were a problem and exchanged them for Winchester SRP.

I'm still sitting on a few K of them, and I like them just fine. I DID have to put my factory striker spring back in my M&P 40, as I was getting waaaay too much practice with FTF drills. Other than that, I like them better than Federals, as they appear to not get crushed as easily. They were another component that I picked up @ $87/5K a few months ago. Cheap and reliable for me after 4K or so rounds downrange.

There is NO WAY I'd use these brazilian MagTechs - they come from a 3rd world country with a socialist for a president. I use only Wolf/PMC. they are almost as reliable as Federal. Packaging and appearance just ooze quality and care of manufacture. Plus, the Wolf/PMC cost less too. Why would I buy brazilian, 3rd world unreliability when I can get wolf/PMC primers made by a country that's put men (and women) into orbit & just planted a flag on the sea-bed under the N. pole? Its clear who has the edge as far as techological know-how.

I had a place to get a good price on them and first bought 1K LP & SP. I loaded them up and fired them in different types of guns, glocks, autos & revolvers and had zero problems.

I went back and bought 10K each so I can save my Win primers for match loads.

Brazil is a long way from a 3rd world country, lots of Germans took refuge there during & after WWII so the technology is on a par with or better than the Russians. England has not put anybody in orbit so does that make them a 3rd world country also. Brazil was the first country to develop cars that ran on alcohol instead of gas as early as 1985. America is still struggling to develop ethanol and we are supposed to be the greatest technological nation if you base it on the number of orbits made. And you are forgetting that the Wolf primers are made in a country that was a dictatorship and some in Russia say it still is. Maybe America should go plant a flag under the South Pole to keep up with the Russians. The Taurus is made in Brazil and I don't remember seeing any pistols exported from Russia.

Does anybody have any experience with MagTech primers? There has been a shortage of primers and I was able to get some Large and small pistol primers but have never used them before. Can someone let me know the quality or some experience with the Dillon RL550B and Magtech primers?

Thank you inadvance,

Marc

They are garbage, no fear, I'll pay for shipping to me so I can dispose of them...

kidding. I have burned through 10k or so this past year and they ran great. No pattern of problems shooting them out of my 1911's, XD's and Glocks.

I've used up about 3K and still have 3K of the small pistol primers.

On some of my semi auto pistols with trigger work there have been some that did not go off but not very often.

Also, when I was loading them on a Dillon Square Deal B they seemed to take less effort to set into a majority of the primer pockets out there.

I've used them to load some of the brass out there that has tighter primer pockets and they seem to work fine.

They used to buy them at a good price of $18/1000 then most recently I've seen them in the $24/$25 price range.

I wouldnt hesitate, Several years ago my local dealer gave me a couple hundred when I was buying my normal Winchesters, I loaded and chronoed them mixed up in a 550, the Wins at the time were silver Magtecs brass colored or maybe vise versa, any way after loading I was able to seperate them. So the chrono results were a statistical tie, I also used a dial indicator or the depth of the primer dent after shootin them in a 17lb mainspring 1911. I found no difference in primer dent depth. Magtecs also fed with no problem through the Dillon.

My buddy that runs a gun shop mentioned that he got lots of complaints from folks who had bought a certain popular .380 pistol and Magtech ammo from him. Lots of fail to fires. Magtech is the cheapest ammo he stocks at the moment. He couldn't get failures with any other ammo. I thought hard primers myself.

[Note: merged threads]

Working Fine

I picked up some Magtech primers from Graf and Sons.

With my cheap calipers, their diameter and height were the same as my Winchester Small Pistol.

I shot a low key match yesterday, they went Boom every time. This was out of my Limited pistol with a great trigger job by Kodiak Precision. They also went Boom out of my Single Stack, also with a Kodiak Precision trigger job.

I have no problems with my Dillon 1050 and with their auto primer either.

So far so good.

I have a friend who has access to some excellent measurement tools. He will do a comparison for me. He has some primers and some of my spent cases. He said he would deprime them and do some more measurements.

With 15,000 primers in hand I am feeling pretty well set for Nationals and A2.
