Production Class 9mm

My wife and I are going to get involved in some USPSA shooting this year and we have been looking around at the differant gear to get us started. It looks like we are going to shoot the production class to get our feet wet. My wife and I looked at the Springfield XD, Glocks, and the S & W MP. It looks like she has decided on the Glock 17 and I will go with the Glock 34. Any reason we should, or should not go with these models? Also, What holsters and mag holders would you suggest to go with these pistols? Any modifications you would suggest we make to these guns? Thanks ahead of time.

I think the Glock 17 and 34 are a great pair for the two of you. I personally like the XDs, but I'm left handed and the ambi mag release is a huge plus for me. The mags for the two of you with the 17/34 will be interchangeable. I'm partial to Bladetech holsters. I think they make a competition pack that's a holster and mag pouch. In production I roll with 5 mags, one in the gun and 4 on two double pouches. Only mod I might suggest is putting a fiber optic front sight. You can go overboard on mods and accessories, but if you're just getting into the sport, follow my advice (that I do not follow myself) and spend money on training instead of accessories that you don't really "need". Good luck!

Hello: Get 2 Glock 34's since you will end up with 2 anyways ;-) I use Comp Tac stuff since it is fast and they are a pleasure to deal with. It will only take a week or so after you order your holster etc. Use a CR Speed belt as well. The Glock has alot of parts available in the aftermarket and the stock parts you can buy yourself. Start saving your brass now and then buy a Dillon to feed those 2 Glocks. Hope this helps. Thanks, Eric

+1 for two 34's. If she was going with a 19 for some personnel reason, (smaller size etc.) i would understand. The 34 is more their competition model and you will her shooting it in the future and you will be shooting the 17. I have been known to be wrong when it comes to females, though

Another vote for getting two 34s unless there's a really good reason why your wife likes the 17 better. The 34 will shoot softer and the longer sight radius is really very handy. I'd pop a fiber optic front sight on them, maybe a Warren/Sevigny rear sight and Tru-Grip grip tape and shoot the tar out of them!

I've got a bunch of holsters and I've been very impressed with the Comp-Tac gear. I have one of their holsters for my Smith 610 and it's incredibly well made....I think a little nicer than the Blade-Techs I have (two). I also have their Belt-feed setup for Single Stack and it's awesome...holds 4 mags without taking up a ton of belt space...throw a single or two behind it and you're set.

I think the G17 and the G34 will be fine choices. The G34 is a couple of ounces heavier (though still light) and has a bit more sight radius. Other than that, they can be set up to be identical.

I'd probably set them up the same (the G17 won't likely come with a 3.5# connector, they often come with a 5# connector...which adds weight to the trigger pull).

- Sevigny/Warren sights

- Extended mag release (standard on the G34, but not the G17)

- NON-extended slide stop/release (standard on the G17, but extended on the G34)

- Grip tape

I would also recommend 2 G34's if you have any idea that you might get into the sport a little more (and if you do have that idea, it's too late now, you WILL catch the addiction - no known cure either). Why does she prefer the G17?

Holsters, belts and pouches - how much would you like to spend? For the belt, go with the CR Speed Belts. They cost about the same as every other decent belt, and they are widely considered to be the best. For the holster, you can get a cheap Uncle Mikes for less than $20, but a Blade-Tech or CompTac will allow a much smoother draw, last you longer, and hold it's resale if you want to switch later. I love my Blade-Tech gear. Grab one with the "Drop and Offset" (DOH) bracket, I like the Tek-Lok attachment. For mag holders, I always use Blade-Tech injection molded doubles - they're cheap and they work nicely.

For mods, as Flex said, get some decent sights on there (I love my Dawson Precision sights), and grip tape (specifically EricW's TruGrip). Some folks have problems with the extended slide stops (holding it down inadvertently so the slide can't lock back on empty).

Don't let these swing'in dicks get you in a spot. :) If she has made up her mind...get your wife what SHE wants. My girlfriend absolutely does not like the G34/35 sized/length guns. She has a G17 and a G20.

For what it's worth, I think the Blade-TEch dropped and off-set holster was originally designed with women in mind. (and, became popular with the guys too, as it's a bit racy.)

While I like my Glocks with stock recoil rods and springs, your wife might prefer going to a lighter recoil spring. If she complains about the slide being too hard to rack, or if she has brass ejecting toward her face, let us know and we will steer you in the right direction.

Why not get two 17's ??? It's probably easier for you to adapt to a shorter gun than it is for her to go the other way. If she likes the 17 then get 2. That way if something goes wrong with one of them you have a direct replacement ..... for her or for you. I personally made Master in Production with a G-17 so don't think for one minute that the 17 will hold you back.

Identical guns ... identical mags .... identical accessories (the list goes on)

I have 3 of Bladetech's DOH (non-TEKLOK versions) for my G-17, G-34 & G-21....couldn't be happier with them. As a side note, if you are going to run tall sights (i.e., .300 tall Dawsons or other), just let them know and they'll lay in a taller sight track at no additional charge.

Either will be an excellent choice. If you have a local range that rents guns I would try and get some trigger time on either. You can also check at a local match. A lot of guys will let you run a couple of mags through their guns after a match is finished.

As for mods I would basically only look at sights right off. Stock ones are ok, but I actually lost my front sight on a glock 22 when I raked a low window. I would look at Warren's or Sevigny's.

I am by no means a Production specialist, but....

The 17 and the 34 will require different loads to shoot the same Power Factor if you are reloading, so.....

I would settle on 2 17's or 2 34's, but NOT one of each!!!

Wife has a G17, mostly for home defense. I'm cleaning out all the things i haven't shot for years to get a G34, and likely a 26 for CCW. One caliber to reload, with options to use my 1000+ pieces of .40 brass if i get the itch.

Dittos here, training and practice goes a long way. Besides the fiber I would do a vanek trigger job. That is about it.
