MuayThaiJJ
Hey gang, I am about to lighten a slide, and I want to go hard. I have seen some builds of guys that drill holes at the rear cocking serrations. I am thinking of removing a lot of material on the top end near the muzzle to resemble a Beretta 92FS slide, and more material on the bottom of the recoil plug area. Please share pics! Thanks N
Racinready300ex
I have a slide off at weight loss camp now, when it gets home I can probably put up a pic if I remember. I basically just told the smith to do what you can do, I'm not picky about the look.

MuayThaiJJ
Thanks, guys, that would be great. I really think I can get a lot of weight by emulating the Beretta open top cut. But I want to try rear cocking cuts
outerlimits
you can take a ton of weight off a slide by milling the sides almost off (just kidding). but you get the idea. then on the inside, there's more to cut.

MuayThaiJJ
Those are great, thanks! I am working with a 7" slide. And I'd like to get it close to 5" weight. Here is what I am thinking, first cutting off the top Beretta style: Then cutting off the recoil area to 5" length: Any thoughts on these cuts? Will they be safe from potential cracking and will they get off the weight I need? Thanks! N

jim vaughan
The 2 primary areas that need all the slide steel you have are: between the breach face and the three locking recesses Around the impact area at the rear of the reverse plug Any other areas can have metal removed. My open slides have a Berretta cut and a swooped tail. Leave enough metal in front of the Beretta cut otherwise you will have cracks there. I am not in favour of flat topping or tri topping due to the thinning of metal near the locking lugs.
MikeBurgess
What is your end goal weight? What type of gun are you building? This slide is 8.5 oz the tri-top is pretty normal the rear cut is pretty aggressive, the big weight savings is from cutting it down to 4"
MuayThaiJJ
this is for a 1911 9mm range toy, I’d like to get the slide weight down to nearly a 5 inch slide weight just so the action is not so lethargic. I plan on chopping off the top as much as I can like a Beretta, then removing the nose off the recoil spring plug area on the front
zzt
To give you an example, these cuts removed 2.5 oz. of weight from the slide. A 5" bald slide weighs 13 oz. I don't see how you can get to that without introducing stress prone areas. Adding an extra deep scallop cut and some side cuts to your sketch above might get you close.
