Southeast Michigan Club for USPSA

Looking for a club to join or at a minimum shoot USPSA/steel challenges matches at, I am registered on practiscore and see a few ranges holding matches but I am interested in hearing feedback about certain clubs within the community rather than just showing up blindly. Ideally, I'd like to spectate a match soon before I start just so I can see how people compete from start to finish. I've been shooting handguns for a bit now but never outside of static ranges.  The ones I am aware of are:

 

• washtenaw sportsmen club (last time I heard they had a wait list and I don't know any members at the club, which I think is required to become a member) 
• oakland county sportsmen's club
• detroit sportmen's congress 
• Wayne county racoon hunter club

 

Looking to start in limited if that makes a difference, potentially production.

Contact Bill Chunn on here. He goes by BillChunn. He has been MD, stats etc in that area. I know he is involved at DSC. I have been up there for many a section match and it is a great facility.

I've never had an issue at any place by showing up blindly.  Is there anything in specific that concerns you?

 

Not sure what you mean by "seeing how people compete from start to finish".  If you've never been to a USPSA match, you will learn a lot more by showing up, announcing to the match director and your squad's range officer that you're new and need guidance, then shooting rather than watching from the sidelines.  You will miss a ton of information if you just watch.

 

You will get help.  You will not be left alone to founder.  I bet money on both.

 

PS you need not be a club member nor a USPSA member to start competing.

Livingston gun club is best for membership if you want to practice on your own and shoot matches.

 

Would recommend raccoon to. really depends where you live and how far you want to drive.

Welcome to the board and USPSA and Steel Challenge.  Good time of year to get interested.  I went to my first match at the end of October many years ago and had to wait through the winter before I could shoot more matches.  SE Michigan has a good shooting community and there are some great clubs you can shoot at and potentially join depending on where in SE Michigan you live.  Wayne County Raccoon Hunters https://raccoonhunters.org/ is a good option if you are anywhere near Romulus and is where I am a member and practice at.  The Detroit Sportsmen's Congress (DSC) is up in Utica if you are north of Detroit, and there is Livingston Gun Club if you are close to Brighton.  There are more clubs in Michigan like Brooklyn Sportsman's Club if you are willing to drive some from SE Michigan.

 

One of the best things about USPSA and these clubs is that you don't have to be a club member or USPSA member to come out and shoot a match or attend a practice, though if you want unfettered access to the range on non match or practice days you will have to join a club.  Going to your first match can be pretty intimidating, but don't let that stop you.  We were all new at one point.  I was absolutely terrible at my first match and got a ton of procedural penalties but had an absolute blast!  One way to ease into it is find out which days the club has their USPSA practice and show up for one of those.  No pressure there and I'm sure if you tell them you are new someone will help you out.  If you have any more questions about clubs or starting USPSA post em up or shoot me a message.

MI05 - Livingston Gun Club - Brighton area - Will be holding an "Intro to USPSA 101" class on Saturday April 3, 2021.  Outdoor ranges available to members, monthly USPSA match with registration on PractiScore.  Electronic pass keycard to get through the gate but will be open on match day.  Runs Steel Challenge practices on Monday evenings and a monthly Steel Challenge match.

MI11 - Detroit Sportsmen's Congress - Utica area - Indoor and outdoor matches, practices on Tuesdays (4:30-8:00 PM) and Saturdays (2:30 - 4:30 PM).  PractiScore used for match registration as the indoor matches fill quickly.

IPSC66 - Raccoon Hunters - Romulus - Outdoor range, monthly matches on indoor range at T-Rex Arms in Belleville ending in March.  PractiScore reservations and matches fill quickly.  Has monthly Steel Challenge matches.

MI29 - Oakland County Sportsman's Club - Clarkston area - New club just starting up.  5 outdoor bays.  First match scheduled for April 2021.  Plans are to get involved with Steel Challenge.

Livingston Gun Club - Excellent club to shoot USPSA.  I travel from Northern Michigan at least 3 times a year to shoot their USPSA matches and Ryan Rocks.  One of my favorite places to travel and shoot.  They always put on a good match.

Thank you, I am looking for a club to join as well because my range doesn't really allow shooting from holster, I basically shoot from low ready to simulate. Also no dynamic shooting, all shooting is on static targets. I am in the suburbs so the ranges are all a decent distance for me (Royal oak area) but I am willing to drive since it's mostly a weekend thing for me anyways. I appreciate the details and help.

Just didn't want to show up to a club without knowing a little more about each of them, and in terms of watching. I really don't know the mechanics of competing, I've gone through the rules and am well versed with handling firearms/safety but just don't fully understand game mechanics.

I don't understand the mentality of "not showing up without knowing a little" but that's OK.  To each his own.

 

On the watching thing, that's where you're not grasping what I've tried to tell you.  So you don't fully understand the game's "mechanics".  Newsflash: you will never fully understand them until after you start playing.  Watching will not increase your understanding very much, if it does at all.

 

I strongly suggest you forget to go to just watch.  Instead show up ready to go and say you're new to this during registration/briefing/squadding.  Ask, on your first match, to be placed at the bottom of the shooting order for every stage.  That will give all the observation you'll need.

Reply sent.  Attending the Practical Shooting 101 class will give you the background (and some range time, weather permitting) that will give you a better understanding of what will be required.  I certainly wish there was one available 20+ years ago as it could have saved me a lot of money, buying things that turned out not to be needed while missing essential stuff (like a magazine loader...lol).

I just became a member of livingston gunclub and oakland county sportsmans club. Livingston is great, can use outdoor bays for practice. They have great matches once a month. Oakland County sportsmans club is probably my personal favorite place for year round practice simply because I work evening shift, 2pm to 1230am, and their indoor range is 24hr. I can set up targets, shoot and move, ect... 

 

One of the biggest pluses about being in the greater Detroit is durring the season, april to about end of October/early November, you can shoot a uspsa match every single weekend. Or a SCSA match most weekend. I'm not 100% sure if there is an SCSA match every weekend or not as I just got into it this winter as Howell Gun club set up a very nice outdoor match with heaters and enclosures on all 5 of their SCSA bays. @BillChunn would know. He is also extremely helpful in answering questions, giving sound advise (of which if you follow it will save you money and help you get better, I should have listened more ) and helping out. He and the folks over at DSC got me started on my journey into USPSA when I showed up for their Tuesday night practice 4 years ago. 

 

Another good thing is just about everyone around he is more then willing to let you try out their guns, check out their gear, willing to give help. Most of the matches are 6-8 stages currently and from what I'm hearing will be around 140-160 on round count. One match is usually a bit higher but with current ammo situations they have shrunk down a bit too. Each club has their own style they use for designing stages and offer something a little different in that respect.

Many of the clubs listed have practice sessions. That might be a good starting point.

I'm a member at Wayne Country Raccoon Hunters and have been for I think like 3 or 4 years now.  I really enjoy the club and the people that I have met there.

 

That being said there are several great clubs in the area, I'd suggest doing some research online and shoot a USPSA/IDPA/Steel Challenge match at those clubs to check it out in person.  If you want to do stuff other than those disciplines some of the other clubs might be a better option.

 

Where you live you should be able to drive within an hour and shoot a match every weekend April-Oct....which is nice :)
