New shotgun. optic options?

Recommended Posts

I need an AR height red dot optic for a new open shotgun (RIA vr80).   Most  people seem to run a plain regular red dot, and typically as small as possible.

I have a vortex spitfire on another shotgun that I really like.  Being a weirdo, I think circle-dot style seems to work better, for me at least and gives me at least a modicum of a pattern reference.

But before I bought another spitfire,  I figured that I would ask here to see if there were any better options.

I use a holosun 510c on my VR80.  It has a circle dot reticle.  Actually you can switch it between circle dot, dot only, or circle only.  It’s solar powered, and or battery.  Auto off / shake awake is also nice.  Battery life is something crazy, like 50,000 hours.

I had a spitfire....... didn’t care for it.    It always looked like more than 1x.

Holosun is a far better optic, in my opinion.

I concur with the holosun 510c.  Have it on my VEPR after trying several others and am sold.

Holosun 510C is great option or any other Mini Red Dot with a riser. Vortex Razor, Delta Point Pro, etc etc.

It is really a personal preference and budget

And THAT is precisely why I am asking here...  😁

I notice that there seems to be both a red and a green version, any thoughts on Color choice?

Are you red color blind? A friend mine is so he bought a green 510C, I have a red one. To me it doesn't matter, (I have shot his gun) to him it does matter.

No, i'm not color blind, just heard on the internet that green is visually more good-er.  Since it's only $30 more it didn't seem like an extravagance.  The only place I can imaging it making a difference (possibly) is on red targets but that's a stretch.

I run Vortex Razor Dot on both of my Open shotguns. 6 Moa. Love them!

For future post reference the eye and brain pick up red quicker and from farther distances.

That seems to be the opposite of what I have read, for example:

https://www.policeone.com/police-products/firearms/accessories/sights-scopes/articles/one-dot-two-dot-red-dot-green-dot-nW0MYnrLXGQudlsz/

https://www.luckygunner.com/lounge/red-vs-green-laser-sights/

https://rangerexpert.com/green-dot-vs-red-dot/

I am not trying to be argumentative, the only positive thing I have found on the red vs green subject ids that red is better for night vision (natural, not NVG).

Change my mind.  😁

Exactly the reason i went with red and not green. Doing some night shoots and running nods with my different IR aiming devices, one has a visible red and the other green. You can’t pick green up at all.

One thought about red vs green... I've run a EoTech in the past with the red dot. Loved it. Until a night qual course for training happened, where the stage was set in total darkness except for red road flare illumination (and weapon lights of course). The red dot washed out 100%, completely not visible, when looking towards or near any of the burning road flares. I effectively had a dead optic at this time. Granted, this is a unique situation, but something to be aware of.

Well my "backup" optic is a vortex spitfire that does red, green or regular black etched.

On a slightly different subject I did run a KONUS M30 1-4x for a while on a rifle, and it had a blue illuminated dot.  It wasn't bright enough to be useful in anything BUT a night shoot, but it was cool...

I bet that 510 will be satisfying. (I like my 507GR) On my VR I've been using a $40 UTG Red and Green SCP-RG40CDQ  https://www.opticsplanet.com/leapers-utg-4in-ita-red-green-circle-dot-sight-w-integral-qd-picatinny-mount.html. No complaints at all after maybe 1000 rounds so far. I think it could be used with the dot turned off too. It will co-witness the stock sights using the QD base it comes with.

The Luth AR Chubby grip is also great. Protrusions to perch thumb, right middle finger and bottom of my hand really spread recoil and make for good grip to reacquire next target. The  honeycomb recoil 'pad' of the Adaptive Tactical  EX stock is bunny belly soft. The curve in it goes right onto the shoulder for a quick pivot up to the sight. https://www.opticsplanet.com/adaptive-tactical-adtac-ar15-m4-adjustable-stock-mil-spec-polymer-black.html I got a good deal on both of these at Delta but they now send  me 4 emails.every.day!

I'm not color blind, either, but my 60&year old eyes seem to pick up GREEN much faster. Every firearm I own either has a NEON green FO front sight (plain BLK rear), or an optic with a GREEN reticle.
