I grew up on a small farm. We had chickens, ducks, quail, rabbits, pigs, and cattle...fruit trees and the regular garden stuff....One day, when I was still very young, I asked my dad why we didn't have any horses, cause we had everything else...it was a very simple answer...You don't eat horses.

In todays world, they are an anachronistic object. No real use anymore.

My wife was riding and competing since before she could ride a bike so when we met in our thirties and married in our early forties I had a good idea what I was in for. We built our house on forty acres and the horses moved with us. Spent $75,000 on the barn and $15,000 on the arena and fencing and at last count we have 14 saddles and countless other pieces of horse related equipment. But we have been able to teach our nieces and nephews how to ride and the responsibilities that go along with keeping a living thing happy and healthy. And a big plus for parents is that if their girls get deeply involved in riding and competition they tend to get past all that teenage boy crazy stuff. Yes I would do it all over again even if it means giving up vacations and keeping my cars for ten years. And my wife encourages me spend what we have left in our budget on guns and shooting.
