USPSA 3-Gun Nationals 2005

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, the weather in Vegas is nice, it was 80 yesterday but really windy. Its suposed to be 90 by friday. Its calm today and I'm praying it stays that way through the weekend.

Hey Butch, that Bass Pro Shop/Outdoor World is HUGE, its like a Home Depot of sporting goods. Everything from primers to boats, to ATV's. They have a "high end" gun room with some really nice shotguns and rifles. Its a must see.

Scraped ice off the windshield of the car this morning so 80 degree weather sounds pretty good right now.

Everything is packed and will fly out tomorrow evening. I am hoping the ammo. I shipped will make it to the hotel in time. I also hope the trip through the airport will go ok. First time flying with weapons.

I put everything except ammo. in a 4-long gun SKB case and cable locked the unloaded shotgun, rifle, and pistol together on the first layer with the holster, mag pouchs, rifle and pistol magazines, shotgun shell holders, belts. etc.. in the second layer. Guns are unloaded and no ammo. anywhere inside this case or the carry on. Triple checked and will check again before leaving for the airport. Also have an empty hard sided pistol case in my second checked back just in case they make me put the handgun in a seperate case.

The long gun case is pretty heavy and I am sure I will have to pay extra for the weight but I am hoping the baggage people can't throw it quite so far this way.

215 is partially open, they run you down frontage road for a few miles but you will get to the range. Thats the way I'm getting there from Blue Diamond Drive.

Last time I was here was 2003 and civilization ended before 215, now there are home less than 1/4 mile from range, and there ALOT of homes. Its incredible!

I'm not a bar guy so someone else will have to decide that, but Hootie and Blowfish and some other 70-80 rock band are playing at the hotel/casino where Outdoor World is and its close to my hotel. Just FYI

Tomorrow I'm off to find the gunshops Berkim found, I'l let you know how that goes.

BTW, outerlimits, forget about primers at Outdoor World, they are mostly a hunting place and from the look of the shelves they sell them by the hundred, there are no boxes of 5K to be seen.

The Riveria should be able to find your package. Like many Las Vegas hotels, they have a separate business center which handles tasks like this for customers, so you're not dealing with hoping a desk clerk finding somewhere in a back room. The business center is not staffed 24x7, and I don't know if they have someone who will open it up off hours, so don't put off making the ammo pickup.

There is a charge for pretty much everything so chances are you'll pay for the package reciept service.

Cab fare is about $18 w/tip, and Bell Trans is about half that. The last time I took a Las Vegas shuttle, I spent 30 minutes on the van while they waited to get a big enough load to the hotel I was going to ... never again. The few extra $$ for a cab are definitely worth it.

Las Vegas is one of the few places which still charges $9.95/day for hotel internet, but wireless intenet is free in the airport - a rather uncommon offering.

Don't you guys trust me? :P

Of course we trust you Cullen, but when was the last time you were in Vegas? This place is being built-up so fast its changing daily!

Latest weather is 85 and isolated thunder storms on saturday and 76 and showers on Sunday. Bring your rain gear I guess?!?!? Shades on 2002 but it was much colder then

I was there from the end of July through the beginning of September (stayed west of the 215 in the South Summerlin area). It is amazing how much of it's being built up. My question is if the 215 is finished east to the 95 yet (probably still several months out). Then there's the bridge they're building south of the Hoover Dam....

Its not, we went to hoover dam yesterday and there is no connection from 215 east to 93/95 south, you have to go north, get off, and get back on southbound. It the dummest bit of temporaty freeway I have ever seen, and I'm from the San Francisco bay area.

Trying to get packing today and since we're flying out we have to pack as light as possible and need some advice from those who have been at that range.

Are there benches to sit down on to take a breather at the bays? Or should I pack my folding camp stool?

Will I be able to park the car close enough to the bays so I don't have to backpack a ton of gear?

Is there any shade at the bays?

Anybody on the forum shooting on squad 24?

Thanks and looking forward to the match.

I (Albert Pilkington) am shooting on Squad 24. Plan on flying from West Virginia tommorrow morning and being there by 10:00. Looks like we get to start our on Standards.

TMC, check out Citadel Gun & Safe on 4305 Industrial Road between Flamingo and Tropicana right off I-15 South. They got all kinds of stuff for the AR. It's the only store I found in Vegas that sells lower receivers off the shelf. American Shooter is nice but pricey and does not have a lot of tactical stuff like Citadel.

Really? That's weird. A month ago you could get on the 215 until it ended, which dumped you off onto surface streets, then make a right at the first light to hop on the 93/95 southbound. They must be doing work there now.

(JP TA-01 calibrated ACOG reticle)

If all else fails, a handful of 30 rounders and the cone of fire method will get the job done ;-)

Packin' now, driving out at o-dawn-thirty!

See ya' all there.

Just 4 stages done for everyone so far and I wasn't able to stick at the range for the prelim results. I had to run off to a smith to have a new disconnector fitted to my AR after it started doubling occasionally in the middle of my run on the LD rifle stage. All good to go again in the morning (provided it passes a function fire) :-)

I will report in after 6pm tomorrow with prelim results after 9 stages are done and I see the results (I hope to have some photos to post too).

BTW, I'm not sucking too badly, yet ;-)

US3G Update from Sin City, USA

Big (and sad) news of the day is that our own Patrick Kelley has DQ'd. I heard secondhand that on stage 6 he placed his handgun in the box with the muzzle pointed the wrong way and was DQ'd when he passed in front of it. I have no info other than the posted DQ and the rumor mill story.

I watched Mike Voigt working with a Shooting USA crew to do a multi-cam video shoot (including a POV cam on his hat) of him running Stage 6. I will try to find out when they plan to air it. 3 gun on the tube, yippee :-)

The highlights I noted on the wailing wall on my way out were that Taran Butler owns the Rifle Standards (Stage 12) with a phenomonal time of 25 sumthing and only 7 points down. Forum Member TMC (Todd Crow) is sitting at 5th on the Rifle Standards with a 28 sumthing run. Way to go Todd! Jerry Miculek totally ripped up the LD Rifle (Stage 10) with a blazing 41 second run and very few dropped points. Amazing, seriously amazing to watch.

Another amazing feat was yours truly turning a potential top 25 run on the Rifle Standards into a big loser with a picture perfect pair of earring mikes on the L & R edges of the upper A/B target from the kneeling position ;-/

BTW, my rifle is back in service thanks to a local gunshop (Accuracy on Boulder Hwy) staying open late and letting me use their shop to butcher a brand new and perfectly good disconnector and a terribly undersized trigger pin into my JP trigger group. It works fine, but John Paul is really going to cringe when the rifle arrives on his doorstep next week with those parts still in it ;-)

I am pretty tired and dinner is on it's way (room service tonight) so the photos I have may need to wait until tomorrow evening.

More later.

...No interim results yet but the match is listed in the USPSA members area / major match results.

I noticed yesterday morning there wasn't even an upload area created, so Rob created one and notified Dave of it. Cindy said she didn't see Bruce Gary out there, so its possible he's not scoring this one.
