Tubguy
Hi Shooters! I'm shooting limited. I still have the recoil master in the gun I have read where shooters are changing the recoil spring to match their ammo. I'm shooting major. I'm looking for input as what I might consider doing. Thanks
al503
If you're thinking of a full length guide rod, most seem to use a 12 lb or 12.5. Edited February 13, 2014 by al503
Tubguy
As new to the 2011 platform. What parts do I need to change out. I'm looking for quality parts, can you point me in the right direction
al503
A full length guide rod made by STI/EGW/Dawson/Caspian/etc., will all work great. I use/have used all of them and didn't have any issues with any of them. I'm pretty sure that you can use the existing reverse plug that you have so all you would need is the spring and the guide rod.
Sandbagger123
get the dawson tooless guide rod. check it out on u tube. match it with a 12-14# spring and you should be GTG
disxbxjun
You have some options for guide rods. I would get a one piece vs two piece flgr. Stainless vs tungsten if you want more weight out front. 12-14# springs should get the right feel.
Kratos
get the dawson tooless guide rod. check it out on u tube. match it with a 12-14# spring and you should be GTG This. Can't go wrong with the dawson tool less.
deano2246
What everyone says, full length guide rod, and 12# spring. My preference is the SV guide rod because of the way it is smoothed to fit where it contacts the barrel lug. special envoy
I have a STI Apeiro (.40) and will also use the full length guide rod. How many pounds for the recoil spring? Thanks for the answer. Edited March 6, 2014 by special envoy
SSGJohnV
What the guys above have said remains true. 12-14 lb spring should do it. I run a 14 lb in my Para for major, cut am going to try a 12 when I get my STI.
disxbxjun
I shoot a STI eagle in 40 major for USPSA and use a 12 pound variable recoil spring from Wolff. I also shoot the same gun in IDPA with 40 minor loaded to 135PF and use an 11 pound spring. With my gun, load, and personal feel of the recoil and tracking the sights, those are the weights of springs I prefer.
itlogo
I'm no gunsmith, but a lot of what everyone's saying is true for what their guns run. Recoil springs run about $7, so get a whole slew of different weights and try for yourself. Your main (hammer) spring weight will also be an important piece of the puzzle as that affects lockup time. Other things to consider--has your slide been lightened? What powder/load are you using? What viscosity oil do you use (Slide Glide)? And finally, which one just feels best for the way you shoot? Ultimo-Hombre
I'll never understand why all the recoil master haters. I ran one for 20k of 40 major, it was flat shooting, and performed flawlessly. I get the bennies to a conventional setup, it is what I run now. But I don't think it has to be done right away.
redwoods
11 to 12.5 lb spring 40 major in an sti 5 and 6 inch gun. Buy both springs and find out which one you like better.

djeffers
get the dawson tooless guide rod. check it out on u tube. match it with a 12-14# spring and you should be GTG +1. I used the existing reverse plug and I have a full length tungsten guide rod. However, I would go with a stainless steel one going forward. I am using a 12.5 lb spring with no issues. But, I haven't put anything in it to hold it together either, so....I guess that is just me being lazy.

Ddipert
I'm using a 11# in my edge with a stock buffer and a dawson tool-less guide rod. I tried several different springs before deciding on this. Buy a few different rate spring to try out.
Kwontanamo
going off of what itlogo said. If you have a lightened slide, and lets say its lightened to the most any gunsmith would like to lighten, what spring weight would you still use? titandriver
I use a 10lb on a Calhoun six inch STI that weighs 36 ounces; a 10 or 11 on the five inch Edges - depends on bullet weight in the five inch guns.
Kwontanamo
titandriver. Ironically my Edge is with Tim right now and I asked him to do everything he would do if that was his gun. Small world. lol Edited April 26, 2014 by Kwontanamo
titandriver
Tim is an awesome 'smith! I've been trying for a year to get mine to puke and it just won't! I shoot 180/200/220's in mine and never a hiccup.

Not a hater of recoil master, but after shooting a guide rod gun you can definitely feel the difference of the recoil master. It feels like a two stage process during cycling instead of one continuous motion. I also want to tailor my my recoil to a particular load which the limited spring selection for the RM didn't do well.
