Water bottles

Recommended Posts

I try to drink a lot of water.

I have a reverse osmosis filtration system at home and usualy fill plastic bottles daily for work and play/shooting.

I typically go thru at least 3-4 liter bottles daily at work and more at home.

I have read that plastic bottles may pose serious health hazards.

From what I've read using glass or stainless steel is better.

Any recommendations on what to use?

I've found these - wondering if there is a cheaper source/alternative.

I had similar concerns for my fiancee since she works in the desert and drinks out of a water bottle all day. I recently bought her a stainless steel, original art, water bottle manufactured by water box and it has been terrific. Aesthetic, dish washer friendly, durable and safe. Check them out here: http://www.waterboxco.com/ I bought mine at EMS, I'm not sure if REI carries it.

BTW, I went to Tufts in Somerville/Medford, great times  . I miss the north east.

Not sure but where are these steel aluminium and Nalgene bottles made ? Id bet a nickle they are all made in China, the same people that brought you poisoned dogfood, toxic baby formula, radioactive sheetrock, antifreeze in the toothpaste, etc etc, Think I'll take my chances with U.S. made reused gatorade bottles

SIGG bottles are Swiss made since 1908. Ask me how I knew wink.gif

The problem with the single walled aluminum bottles is that they don't keep the contents cold for very long. They also sweat in a warm, humid atmosphere. I'm sticking with the BPA free plastic bottles. They're usually cheaper to boot and often can be found with an insulating sleeve.

My 10 year old one says made in the USA and I'm sure it's chock full of BPA...I seem to be doing ok though.

The plastic in bottles like gatorade is made to degrade faster and does so, especially in sunlight...I'm sure you'll be ok though too

That didn't stop them from selling aluminum bottles with a plstic liner that contained BPA as BPA free.

Work with plastics alot. Polyethylene is best plastic for water bottles. Ususally on the bottom of the container near the recycle logo you will see the initials HDPE, or PE, or LLHDPE. This plastic is the same as the milk cartons and soda bottles. It is inert and stable. THe fumes from it's combustion are not even that bad either with a toxicity on par with deisel fumes maybe. (You wouldn't want to breath it to live, but a whiff is nothing to worry about.)

The "white" Nalgene bottles can still be found. Manny of the free sport bottles given away for free that are white and unclear are PE. Good for the top rack of the dishwasher, just rinse and use.

Thanks for all the 411.

Looks like I am going to go with s.s. and buy from Klean Kanteen.

I emailed them about qty discounts and it looks like my Company can qualify for a Green Group Discount which is a pretty nice savings and better than e-bay.

  • 2 months later...

I play a lot of golf and walk the coarse. I've been using a Klean Kanteen http://www.kleankanteen.com/ for years now. Its a stainless bottle ceramic coated on the outside.

I like it because I love the way water tastes coming out of it, if I like the way it tastes... I will drink more!

Can't get enough when it's hot out.

Since my $20 purchase at REI there are plenty to choose from in the $5 range now.

The major difference between a golf coarse and shooting range for me is renewable clean water.

I have to bring all my water to shooting sports. 1 liter of water isn't going to cut it.

Thats when I freeze the nalgeen's.

The real BPA issue is heating the plastic.

Cold water is fine. leaving bottles to get warm in the car can be an issue and heating liquids like brewing coffee can release the toxins. Nalgeen and many others have addressed the issue. REI will even exchange your old nalgeen's for BPA free ones. I usually filter water into mine or mix protein shakes. Always cold water, so I don't worry about it.
