Suggestions for the Caribbean?

Recommended Posts

I don't think she'd be too happy dragged off to some fishing shack - so, any "civilized places", w. decent fishing? (Shooting would be great, but probably quite difficult.)

I've already tried arguing for the Keys - suggested that if the weather turned bad, we could go to Miami...

I have friends that swear by Aruba. They go every year. Not to mention there has to be a range somewhere on that little island because they usually have the Aruba Open. That's been canceled this year due to ammo shortages but anyway, you can't have an IPSC match without a range.

September is hurricane season still, so watch out for that.. Aruba was described to me as being pretty safe from hurricanes. I went to St. Lucia on my honeymoon in 2009, and liked it. Dont know about the fishing though, wish I did.

Somehow I think that she doesn't want to go on a vacation where you are off shooting. And you can't afford to do that since she will be shopping while you are shooting buying everything in sight.

My wife liked Playa Del Carmen (south of Cancun) hotel on the beach nothing but jungle all around. There were only two hours durning the day when you couldn't eat or get a drink at the all inclusive. Free water toys and we sailed every day. We never went to town and she never went shopping.

I took the ex wife to Matzalan and she shopped while I went fishing for 4 days, the fishing was good.

This year I'm taking the wife back to Vegas for the Nationals but she likes going and takes in a show or two.

St. John is very nice. More than half the island is a national park, the snorkle/scuba is excellent, fishing is good (depending on the time of year and the phase of the moon), it's only a 15 minute ferry ride from St.Thomas (which is where all cruise ships dock, and where all the duty free shopping is). St. Thomas is very touristy (Charlotte Amalie is anyway, get away from there and it is all rural and poor). Magens Bay on St. Thomas is very nice, on the other side of the island from the cruise port. If you like Sushi, try Beni Iguana's in St. Thomas by the cruise docks, best I've ever had, very reasonable prices as well.

St. Croix is a 20 minute puddle jumper ride from St. Thomas/St.John. Compared to St. Thomas, St. Croix is very laid back. There are 54,000 people on 26 sq miles in St. Thomas (it being mostly mountainous as well), while there are 52,000 people on 84 sq miles of St. Croix. St. Croix has a rain forest on the west side of the island, and desert on the east. Fantastic snorkle/scuba, & fishing, but accomodations may be a bit wanting, depending on where you stay. Carambola is a big resort on the northwest side of the island, very nice, on the beach, but no cell service, and you will have to drive to eat, unless you eat at their resturant (you'll have to drive to eat anywhere you stay though). Two main cities on St. Croix, Frederiksted (westside, Caribbean sea) and Christiansted (eastside, Atlantic ocean). I stay at a little place called "Cottages by the sea" in Frederiksted when I work down there, mere steps to the Caribbean sea, beautiful sunsets, very laid back. The cottages are like small apartments, stove, fridge, B-B-Q grills outside. Owned by the same family since the 50's. I usually buy some groceries, cook on the grill, watch the sun go down, and have a drink or 6. For resturants, try Blue Moon in Frederiksted, Angry Nates or Rum Runners in Christiansted, or Cheeseburger in Paradise on the eastside.

Puerto Rico has it's place, but it's not where I would go for a vacation. There are lovely parts of the island, but the garbage and crime in certain areas is a major detraction. Old San Juan is pretty neat, it's the oldest fort in the Americas. El Yunque (the rain forest) is awesome, if you go, you must make the trek up to the observation tower at the top..Take water, comfortable shoes, walking stick. It will take about 2.5 - 3 hours up, 45 minutes back down, but it is worth it. Fajardo is a port on the east side and is quite nice. On the full moon, go to Phosphorescent Bay on the south side, it glows like nuclear waste from the algae in the water, very cool. Dining is good in Isla Verde, better in Condado (go to Ropa Vieja, order the Churrasco ala parilla (with chimmichurri), black beans and rice as the meal, the Churrasco maranata as the appetizer, no better food found on the island than at this place! In Isla Verde, order the same thing at Metropol, beside the cock fight arena). There are casino's in Condado and Isla Verde (there is none on St. Thomas/St. John and one on St. Croix).

PM me if you want to know more about these places.

If you don't mind going outside U.S. teritory the BVI's (British Virgin Islands) are nice. We just got back from a week of sailing and the weather was great, not too hot like it can get. There are a bunch of small resorts and a couple of biger ones. The Bitter End Yatch Club on Virgin Gorda is very nice with lots of activities and Virgin Gorda as a couple of great tourist spots like The Baths. Saint Maarten or St Martin, depending on weather you go the Dutch or French side, is a nice place. Good resports on the Dutch side and good shopping and food on the French side. Most of these places have day charter fishing. If you go to St. Martin you have to take the cat over to St. Barts for the day. Nice place for a day trip.

Nice to go to the Dominican Republic - probably the

north shore is best.

Punta Cana is the current hot spot - reasonable rates

and excellent golf/food.

Agreed... If it's still open, play Playa Grande! It is: better condition than Pebble Beach, more scenic than Pebble Beach, and harder than Pebble Beach... and I played it for $90 plus caddy ($20). (Yes, I've also played Pebble)

It' worth the bus ride from Punta Cana.

The BEYC is closed in Sept., unfortunately - My parents used to go there, as a break from sailing in the BVI.

Thank You for all the help - neither of us are too hung up on nightclubs, etc - the ideal would be a small, clean place, near "interesting*" places to eat where she can be on a quiet beach while I chase bonefish across a flat.

*We've both banged around the world a bit, and I work w. food, in a fashion, so we both tend to be more into interesting ideas in food, than in "spiffy" places. I respect the heck out of the guys who get their 6 diamonds/4-5 stars, but I have more fun at a creative down-home place where I can talk cooking w. the guy who owns it/cooks.

I'd do the cruise. We've done that and you get a true sampler of the various islands... Jamaica is the only place I wouldn't get off the ship.

+1 on this, I have done several cruises in the area and loved them all. Some of the new BIG ships from Royal Caribbean have so much to offer you might not even want to get off the ship at the ports. I have done a cruise on The Oasis of the Seas and have one booked on the Allure of the Seas for next March. ALL kinds of ways to get pampered on the ship and the beaches are just a few minutes away in most ports. :)
