  1. The "saw".....& .900 cases I did it a little simpler (for me) as I don't have the "jig" making skills required...I used the harbor freight saw BUT I cut a 3/8" deep hex sock (must be hex&deep) to 3/4" overall with a hacksaw. This gave a good fit for the brass and it fits the slot in the saw locking base pretty good. It will take a little adjustment to get the overall length you want (.906 works for me). I use a mid-length screwdriver to keep a slight amount of pressure on the case bottom when cutting the case with my left hand and then "slap" the cut case from the socket with the same screwdriver with my right hand.. This is WAY faster than my RCBS trimmer and the cuts are square enough for most people (I don't trim any further, just de-burr). total cost was about $32.00 with a free flashlight. MAKE sure to use proper eye protection and some may wish to shut the "saw" off between cuts?.....Proceed at your own risk.... Mike

    8 shot...

Picked up the gun this afternoon from my FFL..... ( Had a BIG gully washer Arizona type rain storm last night, flood water in his business, all computors/electrical stuff unplugged while they cleaned up the damage). What a nice, tight firearm. Bod sent the moon clips too. Called Alchin,.. I think I can adapt the C-More mount from the S&W's to it with a little help from my local gunsmith. Bob even sent the original box..... All I can say is THANKS!!!!. Picking up various weights of "Billy" bullets tomorrow at the Rio Salado ICORE match. Need a holster, moon clip holders and OFF we go.....Maybe, I'll even get an "A" or two? (I usually try to avoid them at all costs)... (No pics till I get her done). Bob, again THANKS!!!, Mike

Sent the fax info... What holster (for "open" class") do you gentlemen prefer?. I currently use a "Ghost" for my open steel gun and am ok with it. Mike
  4. Getting started in revolver shooting (again, at age 71 +). I have both Clays and Titegroup powder on hand. Since I have 6 1/2 #'s of Clays just sitting, I'd like to use it up... I only want one load for USPSA & ICORE so I'm thinking I'll need about 132 PFactor to cover both?...Billy bullets is local for me so I can try several bullet weights/ od's.. I understand that Clays can have pressure problems if too heavy a bullet is used. I'm leaning toward Billy's 135's. I plan on using 38 special cases and have toyed with the thought of using trimmed cases for 38 short Colt for faster/easier reloading???...Eye sight and old age demands a red dot, so I'll be in "open"..(Jerry "M" won't have to worry). Your thoughts??..
  5. Small rifle primers (Winchester). I use them for 9mm minor/major loads for 2 reasons. 1st. I load .223 and only need to buy one primer, 2nd. I figure I'm getting a better burn with 9mm major. (I do use a long firing pin in my 2011 pistol). I don't use rifle primers in a stricker fired pistol as they seem a bit hard.....
  6. Years ago, I put a Ron Powers slab barrel on my old 686... It was perfectly timed on the final turn, no lathe work required.

GEEEZ...I can't seem to get an email to Bob from that address he posted??... I'm not much with the computor, they keep getting returned ???? Well, anyhow I've e-mailed Bob from this site. Hope he checks in soon?. HA, wouldn't you know it... I gave all my 38 brass away some time ago with the dies.... New dies on the way, hitting my shooting buddies up for some brass to get started with.

Thanks, that's what I thought... Mike
  10. Looks like it's either a Taurus 608 (which seems to be scorned upon) or a S&W 627?. Years ago, I shot a custom 686 6 shot and thought I might take up ICORE revolver. As a Super Senior, I'm not out or able to win the match and will shoot with a red dot (C-More), putting me into open class no matter what. I've had Taurus's before (no revo's) and no complaints. At the moment neither are real easy to find, it seems. I'd have the "T" cut for moon clips......So I'd figure the total about $850 or so for the "T" and $1500 or so for the 627..... comments....
  11. Yep, piece of plate over the ports ( my buddy used a piece of a beer can/ hose clamp)......I can't really think of a clamp that will look nice ????.....AR gas block???..
  12. How much $$$ are you spending/can you do your own work?.. Saiga, if you can. Do as suggested ...go to the Saiga/forums site. Opening the gas ports is almost a given (no biggie) and your going to have to profile the hammer and bolt. I have the JTE magwell & 12 rd. SGM mags, Since capacity/function is the game....the R&R mags (16 or 20) and their side release mechanism mag well might be a better choise..I sold my JM Mossberg ...never got the hang of speed loading it...
  13. Clays should do...why not just get the Dillon powder check system???... A lot cheaper than a barrel or an injury...
  14. I'd just replace the breach face if the SV slide is ok, fits tight?. . Asume you had a 40S&W?..... So you would need a new aftec,.355 barrel reamed to what ever caliber you decide to shoot ,comp, C-More and mount. At least one 170 mm mag. I'd go with 9mm (both major and minor). As for side mount or top mount of the "dot", either, is fine...I'm not in favor of the SLIDE mount dot.....(there is a reason you don't see that many of them). To me, they take an awful beating.
  15. I have a "Jim" built Akdal w/ 15/10/5 rd mags I'll be posting for sale soon. (unexpected medical bills). I had a JM 930 but was just terrible about getting it reloaded.... The mags were a lot easier... mike
  16. JM's have Nordic tubes/or/Nordic style tubes.... Just order the +8 and with the xxl extention you can get 12/13/14 in her. (get a new spring also). Your nut will work..... Be mindful that you'll stick out a bit... I used the +6 & xxl extention for a easy 10 in the tube (22" gun).
  17. Frog lube and get a set of cheap dental picks, works fine for me. I have a Nowlin comp/chamber reamer. It makes for a true barrel/comp line up...No bullet strikes..
  18. I've got a way early one... tinkered with it ... never considered it 100%.
  19. I have a Poly choke... They do work... Patterned the gun /changed settings ... You could see the difference. .... That said, a LM will do you just fine for most everything..... I'd not change the settings during a course of fire myself...
  20. I have a Firebird Akdal..... I'm sure that as soon as you use those 10 round mags without "922" compliance you open yourself up for possible BATFE action IF they want to make a case ???. (Things could be slow around the office?) (Not unlike having a AR 15 and a bunch of M 16 full auto parts, ala building a machine gun). Back to the Firebird Akdal, to my knowledge, Jim is currently the only one who is active in the conversions to the Akdal's for our sport and even he runs into problems from batch to batch....The Saiga site is the place to go for info OR this site and "Firebird" in the vendors area. Once the 15 round mags are out ..... You will be seeing lot's of Akdal's...
  21. go to the Saiga.com site, scroll down to Vepr, they are availble fom several vendors, $999....problems are already known....
  22. I don't have the Molot but I do have a new, modified Saiga 12, 19" and a FireBird Akdal 1919.... Some things to think about:.. The Vepr 12 is similar/family to the Saiga 12 in many ways, 12,16,20 round mags are availibile. Excellent comps are avalible, IE: I just put the $100 Molot comp on my Saiga 12. The problems of the Saiga and mods are well known. You can pretty well do all the neccessary mods to the Saiga/Vepr yourself...(The Molot is "in" the family). The Saga.com site has a seperate Vepr forum...check it out. The Akdal is newer, not many "smiths" on the bandwagon and even they are finding problems and solutions to problems for the platform to be used in competition (note that "Tromax" has suspendend taking orders for his Akdal). The largest mag is "only" 10 rounds (more to come I'm sure). Some problems with the Akdal have been resolved?, "light hammer hits", mag springs, gouging the upper receiver, extractor tention, plastic feed ramp, etc. COST.... over $2,600 in the Firebird Akdal (without the new aluminum feed ramp).... about $1000 in the Sagia. Sooner or later, the Akdal may be the mag fed shotgun for competition?????.... .
  23. If you get electronics.... Make sure you buy the "slim" version or you will probably brush one partially off while shooting. I have hearing problems , so I use electronics. The Calwell slim version can be had for $20 to $30 and have the same declible rating as the high $$$$ ones, plus they use only 2 each AAA batteries and have a "red" on light so that you don't forget to turn them off. ... Thru the years I've had Pro Ears/Dillons/Peltors.etc. Be mindfull that all of them have some feed-back if it's real windy outside. I'll sometimes use the rubber ear plugs for certain stages (prone).
  24. Never had a problem.... Do the same here OR we can lock the bolt back. (I still use the flag even w/ the open(locked) bolt...I use the Tapco shotgun flag... Works for me.
