  1. In addition to it keeping the noise level down it also prevents you from looking silly in action photos. Two for one kind of thing. Don't forget the nose too. The eustachian tubes connect your nasal cavity to your ears. Ok, so plugging your nose and your ears is completely unreasonable but I was just trying to make the point that sound waves get to your eardrums from more places than your ear canal.
  2. I drive a Jetta TDI and I am very happy. I do not think I would consider going with a Ford product unless it offered a significant advantage. Although I do not see why Ford couldn't just substitute the diesel engine they designed into a current production car. The safety standards would already be met they would just have to pass EPA standards. A little market competition in the US for some diesel cars would be nice. I love my car and if I cruise on the highway at the speed limit I can get 45+ mpg with power to spare for passing trucks and whatnot. I do get odd looks at the pump though. In fact once in Texas I had an attendant come running out to warn me that I was putting diesel in my car and not gas. Plus I think even though I drive a Jetta I get to keep my man card because it is a diesel. Smart cars and Priuses be damned I get to fill up with the big boys on the highway. What I really want to see is a very powerful diesel hybrid. It worked for the submarines in WWII so why can it not work now? Besides from everything I have read the generators to charge the batteries fun mostly on torque which diesels have in spades. Don't get me wrong here I am not advocating hybrids, i just wish I had something big and powerful that could get me to the big matches on fewer gallons and I think diesel is part of that answer. It would at least tide me over until I got my nuclear powered hover car. BTW biodiesel is only an answer for using up waste oils that are already out there. Actually producing it is a bad idea as it would exhaust our food supply in short order.
  3. Wear a hat and big glasses. Try to cover and cushion as much of your head from the concussion as you possibly can. The motorcycle helmet is not a bad idea if your hearing is your main concern but I think it would make shooting very difficult. Personally I use some custom molded ear plugs that I got from a guy at the Texas State Limited match and put a set of peltor wrap arounds when I am shooting but I only shoot Limited. These are the guys I used am I am very happy. Another option is to quit shooting open. I will take the offending guns off your hands if it means I will save your hearing.
  4. My new goal in life is to have a grasp on the English language such that I can pin letters with the wit and voracity that man has used. Limited shooting must now take a back seat to eloquence.
  5. Holographic wills do not need to be witnessed it just needs to be in the handwriting (verifiable) of the testator in about half of the states. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_will Apparently they are known as Olographic wills in Louisiana. I think there are other issues here that need to be addressed by an actual attorney esp. one that practices in your jurisdiction. edit to add: I am not an attorney I just play one on TV, or I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Nothing I said was intended to be legal advise merely to be used for the purposes of education. Blah blah blah.
  6. The contact was actually with the frame. The width of the body near the feed lips was too wide and was wedging itself to the metal frame in order to lock in. neither the frame nor the grip were newer than three years old. I also could not get a basepad on the tube so I had to work there as well. My one encounter with the SV mags was not great and I feel they did not warrant the extra money spent. That said the SV tube I have is a very easily reloadable 21 and I think that someone with more knowledge could get it to hold 22. I love the mag but I had to do more work and it was harder than any of the STI mags I have. That siad I think both companies produce some great mags and I would happily use either one but I go with STIs because they cost less and I find them easy for me to tune at home. I have one from each company that holds 21 and I do not feel the need to get one to go to 22 (too much cash for me). I am just putting this out there so islandtime can get both sides of the story. I have heard of bad experiences with both companies mags and SV mags are extra. I just want to make sure he doesn't feel that he has to spend the extra cash on mags. STI mags run just fine and I would have no reservations about buying tubes from them again. Although, sometimes I have had to do some tweaking to get them just right, but doing some searching on this site will give you enough info to get them running just fine.
  7. I would not concur with this position. I have one SV mag and 11 STI mags. 10 of the STI mags hold 20 (5 of which are Hsmith tuned). The other 2 both hold 21 reloadable. The SV was much harder for me to tune than the STI. The SV tubes do seem to be made of a harder metal than the STI tubes. The SV tube would not drop free when I first got it and it took some work on my part to get it going right but since then it has been 100% (this may not be representative of all SV mags). I would say that there is absolutely no problem with STI mags. They are the only ones that I will buy in the future. They can be set-up to work great and I have never had a single problem with them. If you want to forget about it you can buy pre-tuned mags. I wanted to learn how to make my own gear run so I bought some tuned mags and put the rest together myself. You can do a search on this site and learn lots about mags. Pick your tubes and use parts from Bolen, Grams, or Dawson. If you want to know what I think about setting up mags in more detail feel free to PM me. Also, thanks for replying that your desire was a heavier gun that helps me out a bit. I would say to look at some used guns but take your time and make sure you get what you want. In the meantime maybe you an go ahead and get your mag situation sorted out and maybe even try some other people's guns to get a better feel for what you like. The Bedell idea mentioned previously is also a good one but it is a bit more than you are looking to spend. Then again there is something satisfying in knowing that a particular gun is built just for you.
  8. What is wrong with your current set-up? Do you not like shooting the Glock or are you just looking for something new? You really do not need to have a 2011 variant to be competitive in Limited. That said I have one but I would urge you to try one out before jumping head first into them. There are several schools of thought on how to set one up but it all boils down to personal preference. For keeping it under $2000 you may want to look at the used market. I know that to set-up the mag new runs around $100 for untuned mags. Also all of the little personal preferences add up and you may want to start cheaper so you can spend some money on things that you know you want (sights, triggers, or magwells). I have never purchased a stock STI so I cannot give you educated advise on your first question. However, I would say that getting the enhancement package would be a good idea because it is kind of like insurance that the gun will run great when you get it. I think Brazos offers this service too. As far as extras that you "need" there are none that you have to have to compete but there would be things that you may like more that what is in the gun already but again that is all personal preference. Also the eagle v. the edge; it is all in the weight. Here you have to know what you want and how you want the gun to feel. I like the heavy guns but I am a bigger guy so you may not like them. For the second question, I would say that the differences are cosmetic for the most part. However hard chromed guns do tend to last longer because of the wear properties of chrome. I think your other options are to buy used or custom. I would say that custom is out of your price range and there are good deals out on the used market but be sure to ask the seller lots of questions. Although, I do have to ask again: what is wrong with the Glock? (i think knowing why you want to change would help answer the question. I think you could spend the money on ammo and just shoot the crap out of the Glock. Don't forget that changing platforms means all new equipment (holster, mags, mag pouches, and extra parts if you so choose). Heck, don't think I am trying to get you down here I bought my 2011 just cause I liked how it looked compared to other guns that are competitive. Good luck. I am sure many more will be by to offer their $.02 (edit: to add that I started posting before there were any responses)
  9. <---This one. It was the first time I had stepped into the world of 2011s. In fact before I had that gun built I had never even held an STI before. I had a guy in SE Missouri build it on the recommendation of a friend. They guy did everything I asked to it. There is a thumbshield built in and it feels perfect in my hand. It has since been hard chromed. It is also super accurate I have put sub 1.5" 10 shot groups at 25 yds with it and a 4" 10 shot group at 50 yds with WWB. I had it built with the idea of shooting IDPA ESP with it but then I ended up not having a club to shoot at when I moved. I shot in limited for a while but now it is my fun gun. Sometimes I shoot it in open by just putting a big stick in it. It feeds anything including empty cases. I know I could take it to major but I just don't want to hold onto it without a comp. I would have no reservations about taking that thing out and shooting 1,000rds and the slipping it in a carry holster without a cleaning. I can't stop the thing if I tried. That and there is something sentimental about your first full custom gun.
  10. I live right on the west end of the Plaza on 48th street. I also worked one summer as a backpacking guide for a camp out of Hyattville WY and I used to make tons of trips to Ten Sleep from there for Ice Cream. I drove through Buffalo several times. KC is nice and all but I think I would prefer to live in WY (but then again I am only here for law school). I hope you enjoy the Trojan you bought.
  11. I would say the key is to shoot what makes you comfortable, but keep your eye open for new things because you may find something you like better than what you prefer now. See if you can try other peoples guns and ee if you can learn anything from that. I think 9 is a great idea especially for shooting plates. There is lots of good load data for 9mm minor on this site if that is the way you choose to go. However I have no experience shooting lead out of a 9 so I would advise on reading others perspectives before jumping in if you have not loaded 9 lead yet. All of that said, I would go with a 5" because the sight radius and weight are beneficial. I do not think the recoil would be too distracting in a shorter gun but i do think it would be more difficult to be accurate and speedy with a smaller gun. In this way I agree with G-ManBart. You mentioned buying STI guns with the recoilmaster and being worried about that. First off, don't just limit yourself to one brand of guns; look at others and see if there is something that you fancy more. Second, the recoilmaster is an easy switch if you do not like it. Also, is you are shooting 9 I would think that you would not be reducing the loads from factory specs all that much if any because you still want to take down the plates (I assume they are falling plates). I have a gun set up in 9 for IDPA esp and I load my ammo hotter than factory because I want the plates to fall (it is around 143pf). Finally, there maybe a balance in there for you. If you say you like the way the lighter weight gun feels then you should go for a lighter gun. There may be a manufacturer out there building a light weight 5" gun in 9. If that doesn't work out I am sure there are plenty of gunsmiths out there that could build you one with everything you want. As a caveat, if you are not shooting falling plates then you may want to consider getting a .22 topend for your already existing 1911s. .22s are cheap and a new topend is much cheaper than a whole gun. Or you could practice with a .22 and save money for shooting the .45s if you like them. Also, have you looked at shooting open? I know it is not the question you asked but STI does make a gun called the Steelmaster. However, I would not recommend shooting lead through an open gun.
  12. How about 5. http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1431913 Five in a different way. http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1465955
  13. The CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics may be good too. Here
  14. Anyone got anything on UTurn? Here are the ones I got so far but I would like to see something more interesting. http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1313238 http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1312946 http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=1312836
  15. I got 480,200,000 pf. I got 480,200 pf. Are you guys forgetting to divide by 1,000 for pf (USPSA) calcs?
  16. Is the Lo-Fi version any better? Link on bottom of most (every?) page.... Yes the Lo-Fi version is faster on the phone. I did not even know that option existed. Nice!
  17. Heck, Laptops are to big. I have and Enos forum icon on the first page menu of my iphone. I carry the forums in my pocket with me everyday. When I get bored in class I surf the forums on my phone. I haven't had to do it at a match yet but that is more related to the fact that I try to distance myself from the scores at a big match and just shoot without worrying myself with other info. Besides, not all hotels have WiFi and I can usually get cell service to read the forums. I guess it would be too much to ask to get a cell friendly version of the forums so I take what I gets and I am happy doing it.
  18. Me too. My brother.
  19. "Anything not factory recommended would void the warranty" That was a genius observation in this situation except for the fact that the man had put the mower in the trash. That leads me to believe he had no plans of a warranty claim.
  20. Me at an IDPA match. Look closely and you will see the hammer is down in the gun.
  21. Divorce attorneys are silly. I once saw one say, "what is good for the goose is good for the gander." Opposing counsel's objection was that animal husbandry had no bearing on the court.
  22. I have fitted several ejectors like the untuned ones from Brazos with only a dremel. Go slow, read Bob's page on how to tune one and you should not have a problem. However, I did have to work on almost every surface to make sure it fit the frame, did not contact the slide, and did not touch the rounds in the mags. It takes time and patience but I have never felt like paying big $$ for something that is really not all that hard to do. The real trick is getting the back to match the back of the slide (don't do it with it in the gun or you will ruin your finish).
  23. Also .40 brass is cheaper than 10mm. Same idea as before with getting the most rounds in the tube while still making major but brass price can affect things too. It is like 9mm major vs. .38sc, for open, same rounds in the mag but 9mm brass is cheaper.
  24. A little off topic: How do you clean just the chamber?
