  1. I would go hang out at a couple of matches to get a feel for what is going on. Start slow. My general suggestion is to start in production shooting a 9mm of your choice. Learn the ropes, then worrying about being competitive, winning, etc. While your local club may not be big in production, it is still the most popular class overall, at least where I shoot. Learn to walk before you run. Shooting USPSA is a journey, not a destination. Also join the USPSA so you can get classified, etc. I went old school. I like 1911s so I shoot single stack. Not the most popular class, but I have fun and that is what it is all about. Be safe, have fun.
  2. I just started running that set up for SS. Had the BOSS hanger with a Comp-Tac holster. Picked up the RHT double layer kydex. Super nicely made, and very stiff. Bolted right up to the BOSS. Pretty much going to be my standard set up now.
  3. These are the VZ Recons. I had VZ Operator IIs and they were nice too. But these things make your hand feel like it's glued to the gun! They're like little suction cups.
  4. So I was at the range today. Seems like I've got a decent amount of grip strength.
  5. Saw this before. USPSA just reposted it. From the Single Stack Nationals
  6. I run a 12# recoil spring with a 18# main spring in my 1911. I also have a Harrison small radius FPS.
  7. No doubt that 9 is king, but from what I see it is the dominant in everything except SS. At least where I shoot.
  8. Have not made it Richmond yet. Richmond would be closer to 5-1/2 for me. Up north I shoot with the North Coast Pistol League in Eureka and the Shasta Shooters in Redding. Tried to get into a couple of matches at the Davis (Solano) club, but they are always full before they allow non-members to sign up. Down south in LA/Orange counties I shoot with the Deadwood Boys in Piru, a couple of clubs in Corona Hills (Norco Running Guns and Prado Running Guns), and down i Pala with the Linea Del Fuego group. Even made it to a match in Lake Havasu City a couple of weeks ago. I like shooting with different clubs. Lots of different stage set ups, different folks and so on. Hopefully I can make it down to Richmond sometime soon.
  9. Northern California?? Stop, you're killing me!! I live 6 hours NORTH of you and I'm still 90 minutes from the Oregon border!! But I digress. You're right, SS is pretty rare at most matches I attend not only up here, but down south as well. But like I said, at the matches I do go to and shoot SS I do not recall seeing any .40, mostly .45 and 9mm. YMMV.
  10. Weird. I shoot at 5 different clubs from northern to southern California, and almost all the SS shooters are shooting .45. Those that are not are shooting minor 9mm. I cannot recall seeing any .40 SS shooters.
  11. FWIW I run a 12# recoil spring in my loaded shooting 750fps ammo (172pf). I also installed a small radius firing pin stop from Harrison Custom. Gun runs great. Never once had a FTF in over 5,000 rounds with this set up.
  12. The last 3 matches I have shot had a stage that required weak hand shots. Since going to the single left side TS I have not had an issue with any of those stages.
  13. The focus on the front sight tip always seems the best. I have noticed that the better I get at that the better my scores are. And for me it goes beyond just focusing on the front sight. It is being aware of it, where it is and when it is where I want it to be when I pull the trigger. It is a cool feeling for me when it almost feels like the targets are appearing in front of my sights as I focus and am aware of where the front sight is.
  14. As many as I can which ranges from Zero to 5. Average 1 to 2.
  15. I took he ambi off mine. I shoot USPSA single stack and only rarely do we have weak hand targets. As I look over the past year out of over 100 stages I can only think of 2 or 3 with weak hand targets. Last one was last match and it was on a classifier and with weak hand I had 3 alpha 1 charlie on the 4 shots required. Single side safety is not an issue for me. I installed the Harrison TAC TS when I installed his sear/hammer/disconnector. Great parts.
  16. I do when there is steel in the stage. I shoot single stack. Keeping track of rounds is important.
  17. I've been really pleased with my DAA racers.
  18. I have the same issue. I try to slow down, refocus go from there. As I've gotten better at front sight focus I've gotten to the point where I don't need to look at the target to call a wild shot. I can tell by what the front sight did where my miss went. That's a pretty cool feeling. Another thing I do is to do a couple of dry fires before loading a magazine in. Then I do 1 or 2 more in between each magazine.
  19. Golf has done this right. There are only 34 rules of golf and the basic rulebook is very short. However, there is also a much thicker/larger official "Decisions on the Rules of Golf". ANd is all that matters. No internet posts, emails, etc.
  20. That is such a cool feeling!! I'm getting better at calling shots and knowing where they are going as the trigger gets pulled. Even when practicing I can generally tell when I'm going to have a flyer.
  21. Which is exactly why I swapped out the sear/disconnector/hammer on my Springfield loaded for John Harrison's True Radius ignition set. Well worth the money!! BTW, for USPSA I am shooting some locally available reloads. 230 gr TMJ at 750FPS for a PF of 172. Very easy shooting loads Had zero problems with any steel targets as well (as long as I hit the damn things!!).
  22. The BOSS hanger sold by Ben Stoeger works great with the Comp-Tac.
  23. I got 3 feet of clear non-slip tape at a hardware store. Grippy as hell and so far (a few thousand rounds) has not worn down. In addition, it stays stuck, even when I use brake cleaner to spray off the frame.
