  1. Do we get a prize when we hit 50 posts
  2. If the match is not too far away I strongly suggest going and watching how it all goes. Great way to get accustomed to the flow, commands, etc.
  3. This is how I try to hold my elbows. Seems to work for this guy and I'm liking it too. So effective for both ends of the talent spectrum!!
  4. Allow me to re-phrase myself. Committing a Safety violation that results in a DQ is the closest thing you can do to coming close to making a complete ass of yourself. Point is, he should not be worried about that or even thinking it. Because, as you say, shooters, especially competitive shooters, are great people and there is virtually nothing you can do to embarrass yourself. Better?
  5. Pages 46-49 of the Rule Book outlines them all: https://www.uspsa.org/document_library/rules/2014/Feb 2014 Handgun Rules.pdf I came really close to breaking the 180 in a recent match. Like 179 degrees!! Moving left while reloading. I'm a righty. Definitely been practicing that one!! Biggest drill I am using is to continue focusing on safety and not worrying about much else right now. 180 rule and finger out of trigger except when pointing at what you want to go BANG at. Those are the two big ones for me.
  6. The only way to make a total ass of yourself is to do something unsafe and get DQ'd. A ND would be the worst, breaking 180 second. FOcus on not doing either of those and don't worry about the rest. Go shoot and have fun. All the other stuff will come with time and practice.
  7. I was in basically the same boat as you. I did have some experience shooting IPSC from before there was a USPSA, but found it was like falling off a bicycle, you never forget how. I shot my first match in many years with a great group of guys. It was a large match, 7 stages with the classifier with a round count up around 25 to 36 per stage, so around 200 rounds or so for the whole deal. Just go, tell them you are new, and then go be safe and have fun. I concentrated on being safe 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Then I thought about accuracy. Speed was not part of my thought process at this point. Let the speed come. At least that is what I am doing and having a blast doing it!! Nobody laughed while I was shooting, although some in my squad had time for lunch while I was up.!!
  8. Yep, I know the speed will come back. I was focused on accuracy, which I was really happy with. Now just have to maintain that and speed it up, a LOT!!!
  9. When I decided to get back into shooting a 1911 in .45ACP was my only real choice. Always liked them, always will. It's what I shot when I had faster reflexes back in the days when that was all we shot. Except for the lightweights who shot 9mm. I started shooting IPSC/steel combat (what we called it in Tucson) around 1982. Did it for 5 years while in school. Got a job, moved to Texas, still shot recreationally, but not competitively. Drifted into other things, but here I am again!! Sorry it took so long. Forgot how much fun it is!!
  10. Shot my first match in 30 years on Sunday. Accurate but slow as a half dead snail. So I have the power and accuracy parts down, now I have the need for speed!! 68th of 79 shooters overall 4 of 6 in Single Stack. I did "nick" two hostages, but they were only flesh wounds, I swear!! 88% of shots were Alphas, 11% Charlies, no Bravo/Delta, no Mikes, just the 2 No Shoots. But they are bringing a Sundial to time me the next time out!! But none of that matters. I had a blast and cannot wait for the next match. SA 1911 Loaded Target performed flawlessly, I just need to shoot it faster. Oh, and I HATE rotating metal targets!!!!!!
  11. I just joined a couple of weeks ago. I got a hardcopy rule book with my membership package.
  12. I'm shooting my first match in a very long time this Sunday. All I am focused on is being safe and not being DQ'd. Have some fun, don't worry about where you finish, how fast you shot, classifiers, etc. The two things to focus on are having fun and being safe!! Shooting competitively is a journey, not a destination. Slow down and smell the gunsmoke!!
  13. Not sure why you need to wait to join. Do it online and give them a call towards the end of the week. They'll tell you your number so you don't have to wait for the snail mail. It's $40. Why wait?
  14. Yep. That and a few thousand rounds of 45ACP!!
  15. Using Cox ISP and Thunderbird email client. Sent a few messages to their "Contact" page on the log in page. I'll try a direct one. Thanks.
  16. I just got my new USPSA rig today. Got the single stack set up using DAA belt and mag pouches combined with Ben Stoeger's BOSS hanger and a Comp-Tac holster. Fun stuff!!
  17. I'm in sort of the same boat. Have a 1911 so single stack seems like the natural place to start. After a few matches I may pick up some 10-rd mags and shoot limited-10. For me the important thing is to get back to shooting matches. Which Division is not as important in my mind.
  18. Currently have a stainless Springfield Loaded Target in .45ACP. First gun I ever shot (in the Navy) was a 1911, first gun I owned was a 1911, and the last gun I had before my hiatus was a 1911. So when I got back, well, a 1911 was my first choice!! Hence the "1911" in my screen name. Fortunately that's not my birth year!!! Just got my rig for USPSA from Ben Stoeger. Been wasting away a rainy day setting it up. He sells a nice package from DAA with a DAA belt, DAA mag pouches, and his BOSS hanger. I got a Comp-Tac holster. And yes, we can still get ammo here in California, at least until January 1, 2018. Let's just say that the FedEx guy is going to become a regular at my house!! In fact I got a visit today and he told me that he's been delivering a lot of small heavy boxes lately!!
  19. New member here. Living mostly in Humboldt County, CA with 25% of my time down in SOCAL. Just getting back into shooting after a long time away. Looking forward to shooting my first match in too long. Found a great local club that has monthly matches and there are a few more within a comfortable (for NORCAL) drive. Looks like I need to get some more ammo!!
  20. Curious, I can't seem to get registered for the member's forum on the USPSA website. Keeps telling me it sent a confirmation email, but I never get the email. So, am I missing anything? I'm registered on the site with my member number so can get to everything except the forums.
  21. I try to live like my dog. There is only now. No past, no future, only now. And now is all that matters because it is all there is. You can learn a lot from a dog.
  22. I am definitely "Too Old for this $#!t". Unless the wind is wrong or the sun is in my eyes, then it's something else
  23. Agreed. I am almost certainly going that route. Just have to decide on the Ghost or DAA mag pouches.
  24. I'm going to be shooting SS as well. I picked up a BladeTech Revolution and their mag pouches. I have a decent stiff belt that will work for now. Likely going to go with a rig from Ben Stoeger http://benstoegerproshop.com/
  25. FWIW, I am not a total newb, just an old rusty one. I shot a bunch of IPSC/steel when I was younger then drifted away from shooting for too long. When I last shot competition (nearly 25 years ago) I was a "B" class shooter. I recently started back up and naturally gravitated to competitive practical shooting. I really have no issue with a club asking an unknown (to them) shooter to"get acquainted" before shooting. I've joined USPSA and I am looking forward to getting back into the flow again. I'm rusty, but getting back the shine pretty quickly!!. It will be fun to shoot a classifier to see where I am now!!
