    9mm Open

Paul...thanks for the update on your work and experimenting.. I was going to give it a try also..but was hesitant as I wondered about the reliability of the short OAL of the 9mm in the big mags unless it was loaded out like 38 super/9x23. At the short length I was wondering what the choices would be in powder and bullet combos.. I actually stopped myself as I slapped my head and pondered.. 1. My gun works 2. My mags work 3. I have a pile of 9x23 brass squirreled away. 4. My gun AND mags work So I asked why do I want to do this...thanks for doing my homework..

    Mag wells

I've got small hands so..my experience will be different...but I have been playing with the Dawson..before that and still on one of my guns..I have an EGW...it works great.... another one you might try is the Krebs...it used to come in plastic, aluminum and stainless...I think I might have a black aluminum somewhere...let me know if interested....
  3. Roger.. what kind of load are you using in your gun..also your gunsmith's 9mm ..what load and OAL is he using??? I am toying with idea of switching my setup and was just curious..
  4. Thread on 1911 with a proto of Springfield's new TGO pistol..kinda cool..straightforward gun for L10, IDPA, Single stack classic. http://www.1911forum.com/forums/showthread...;threadid=39885 Anyone go to SHOT??? (Edited by eerw at 10:54 am on Feb. 17, 2003)
  5. You guys have any problem with the shorter cases moving when shooting the 9x21 or 9x91 in a 9x23 chamber...does it erode the chamber any when doing so??? thanks
  6. Wow..never...seen that one...so its breaking inside about middle of the sear. How is the fit of the sear on the pin..tight..loose..
  7. Hey Jeff Sorry,,I don;t remember what I have in my gun...It should be back in a week or so..I;ll let you know then...I would suggest start with a 16 or 18 pound spring and see where youbrass ends up..if I remember I settled for the brass ending up about 10 to 12 feet out..and the buff I was using was not getting cut up..I don't like heavy recoil springs..so I was compromising on a slightly lighter one...In my race gun I am using a cut 9 pound..but that is comped .... There is a spot that you can set an extractor that it will work for both...it may not be the ideal setup as it can be hard on the extractor and may shorten its lifespan..as noted the rim size is different and if it is set for 9x23..you will either get failures to feed because the super will not be able to get under it, or you'll flex it too much and it will break..vice versa..if set for the super..it may not grab the 9x23 beacuse it is too loose.. so two would be idea..but a pain to deal with if you do a lot of switching.. good luck...
  8. very cool...did they give and details about them..do they extend past the gun, etc.. They did a great job on the 38 super/9mm OM lenght magazines ..Derek Dibble and metalform have been first rate...
  9. Is that that Commander size STI gun...very nice
  10. oohh booyy...I haven't measured factory 38 super in long time...I think WIN silvertip is about 1220-1250 for the 125gr HP..WIN 9x23 silvertip runs about 1400-1450 for factory...but with IPSC reloads you will run them about the same..you may use a little less powder in WIN9x23 brass as it is thicker..right now I am shooting 115gr bullet in 9x23 brass with about 8.6 3n37 for a 168PF
  11. 9x23??? 38 super/9x23 have the same OAL..but the the 9x23 is tapered where the 38 super is straight walled...I have shot super in my 9x23 and 9x23 in my super..only issues I have run into is 9x23 brass that has been fired a lot, won't chamber in super..and you may need to adjust the extractor little when changing as the case rims are different... There will be folks out there that will tell you not too..but so far I have had no troubles doing this..
  12. I tend to use the big stick a lot..I have three..one holds 29, one 27 and one 25..my thinking . is if I don't have too..it is one less thing( a reload) to have to manage in a COF and one less thing to screw up..so if the course is 18 or so rounds I will use a big stick...if its a 12 round classifier or mandatory reloads I will use my 140mm mags.. anyway..I find I need to practice my reloads more..to stay proficient..cuz I don't have to as much anymore..
  13. It will really boil down to how you like the gun to feel when you shoot, how it actually performs (measurable), and what your application is..(steel shooting, IDPA, IPSC). Some people like light, snappy feeling guns..some people like heavier guns...it really is up to you..depending on skill level too.. you might/might not be ready for one or the other..
  14. THanks Kurt..not sure if I can make it to Aurora Sat., but if so I'll come find you... In general is the ACOG a good way to go?? or should I be looking at other optics.. (Edited by eerw at 4:56 pm on Jan. 16, 2003)
  15. Thinking of getting an ACOG for an AR... Noticed an TA01 for .223 and a TA01b for .308 but heard some folks using the b model on their ARs...what is advantage to doing this??? thanks again..
  16. Kurtm and KellyN Thanks..for the info and thoughts..I just got done readin the JP thread where a bunch of folks were like the 18 ltwt with a bennieC comp... There was just local rifle/shot gun match and a bunch if not most of the rifle were JP full size rifles..... (Edited by eerw at 5:01 pm on Jan. 15, 2003)
  17. Thanks for the reminder.. just to note because I did not know the power factors for rifle major rifle PF 340 minor rifle PF 160 (Edited by eerw at 12:18 pm on Jan. 15, 2003)
  18. Ron...along the front range..I run only about a 168PF or so...if I travel..I'll take it up to about 170PF... but my latest 9x23 load of 8.7gr 3n37 with a MG 115CMJ bullet runs real consistent...
  19. you know...I never considered making minor in rifle...just didn't hit me...anyway..what is minor..is same as pistol??
  20. What have you found to be the idea rifle barrel length 16", 18", 20" etc...thanks..I am wanting to build up a rifle and wanted to see what was working for people...what is the best compromise for longrange shots and close in hosing..
  21. Para mags can get one or two more in because the taper at the top of the mag is different..
  22. Sometimes the grip from one SV or STI will not fit right up on the other...so not completely interchangeable..You also need to take some care in realigning the bushing with the screws as the will rotate when re-screwing in the gripscrews . I have had good luck using a nylon rod (1 1/2) diameter and gently tapping the dust cover and grip safety area of the frame while holding the plastic grip to get it off..actually I have also beat the crap out of it too when I forgot to take the trigger guard screws out..
  23. Just got back from the range with my EGW blaster..The gun just came back from the platers after breaking the gun in the past three months..cleaned all the oil off and lubed it up with SGlite..gun is tight but cycles smoothly..went out..its about 35 degrees, but the sun is out...so may be warmer on the gun... Ran without any problems...shot about 100 rounds...then had to run off to work..so ..so far so good.
  24. I think you would end up headspacing off the extractor and not the case mouth..which would allow the case to seperate from the breechface during firing and you would get some serious primer flow.. That would be very cool if it were that easy..but I don't think it is..
