  1. I need to order some COC grippers. It sounds like you guys get in some good workouts with them. I tried a buddies set a few nights ago, and the 1.5 felt like a good weight. I could close the 2.5 a few times in a row, but the knurling on the handle just about chewed my fingers up, ha. He doesnt have a #3, but I think I'm going to order one just to try. So is the consciences that high reps are better for our sport? Or heavier, and lower reps/holds/negatives?
  2. I run a 12lb spring. The Smith recommended and 11lb. As to the cuts, the are a very common type of cut. And the Smith has "cut hundreds of slides that way and hasn't had one crack".
  3. The first was an STI slide, this is a Capian. I just shot a couple hundred rounds through the gun and it did not change. I guess I will shoot it until it does. I cannot see the other side very well, so I cannot tell much about it. I might take it to work and see if dye pen will tell me anything.
  4. Ordered 4lbs of N320. Thanks for the heads up
  5. You'd think so huh? He has yet to offer any help, or communicate that he is going to stand behind his work. I do not have a backup gun, and this has the potential to ruin my season and progress. Like I said, the headaches Ive gone through with this gun are ruining the sport for me.
  6. If you crack a slide and want to feel better about it, just read my thread. http://www.brianenos...topic=161612= I just discovered the new crack last night. First slide was an STI, new slide is a Caspian. I'm dumbfounded.
  7. So....I just wanted to update this thread. I had to have an entire new top end put on my gun. I waited several months, and got it back, and thought all was well. I have used the gun in 3 matches, and a few practice sessions. I'd say about 1500 rounds through the new top end. WELL, MY NEW CASPIAN SLIDE IS NOW CRACKED AGAIN! The crack is in a different spot, and I just noticed it last night while cleaning. I have babied the gun and made no changes since I got it back from the Gunsmith. What the hell is going on. This is ruining the sport for me. I pay a lot of money and wait so that I can have a quality gun that will last, and I can focus on competing, but it just breaks again.
  8. Yep, thats my guess. I recently had a new top end put on my limited gun, which has ligtening cuts that penetrate the slide. So, when I saw the new barrel it thought it looked pretty bad. I called Schuemann, and they said "well most people like the new texturing?"...... I think the reality is, most people dont care, because you cannot see that portion of the barrel. Looks to me like they are just saving a step in the manufacturing process. Rough cut the slide to correct dimensions, but do not spend time finishing and polishing something that will not be seen. Value added v.s. non value added. As a manufacturing company you always need to try and remove non-value added processes. That being said, I'd rather have a nicely polished barrel.
  9. We have a hand dynamometer at work, and after reading this thread I rushed to go get it, Ha. It would be interesting to take it to the next USPSA match and see what the correlation between classification and grip strenght was... It pegs out at 200lb though, so If you can close a 2.5 COC it doesnt do much good.
  10. Sorry to hear this. I have been in the same situation before, it sucks. My faith in the smithing industry took a hit because of it. Hope everything works out!
  11. Shooting clays, wether it be trap, skeet, or sporting clays is all about seeing the bird clearly. Like REALLY focusing. When you say it was as if you werent trying, I have a feeling that the reality was that you were focused on the bird, and your subconcious took care of the rest. You know exactly how to break the bird every time, its just a matter of not letting your concious mind get in the way.
  12. He lives up to the hype. I shoot with Johnny often. Great guy and shooter.
  13. Yea, I'm going to have to disagree as well. Your last statement seems to contradict itself. A "highly tuned gun" should be just that. That is why we pay Smiths what we do for a custom build. When a customer pays for, but does not recieve a gun that is "highly tuned" (ie. and extractor that is so tight the gun wont cycle) I can completely understand them being disgruntled. I agree though, at some point in the guns life, it will probably need adjustments..... but the OP isnt talking about having problems after 10,000 rounds.
  14. I had this EXACT same problem recently. Sent my limited gun in for a new top end (slide cracked).... Several months, and about $1400 later I got a gun back that didn't work. The work was done by the original builder, who is very highly regarded on this forum. SO, just saying I feel your pain. I was pretty upset over it. The smith ensured me it worked fine when he test fired it. Well, I guess UPS messed it up then???..??? Um no. Anyway, it was the same problem you are havin. Rim of the case would not slide up under the new aftec extractor. I pulled one spring out of the aftec, and it runs great now. Smith told me that isn't the right fix for the problem, and I should send it back. No thanks, I'd rather be shooting me gun.
  15. Yea, the heavy cotton MKs are OK, but i was wondering about the graite creek pants specifically. They are a light nylon pant.
  16. Just thought I would see if anyone is using these pants for shooting/USPSA? I actually bought a pair several years ago to climb in, but never used them much, and have now misplaced them.... I do remember that they are lightweight and dry fast. I'm thinking they might be a good non-"tacticool" option? http://www.amazon.com/Mountain-Khakis-Mens-Granite-Creek/dp/B004HHOW92
  17. Ive been trying for a few weeks. Have not gotten anyone on the phone yet. I just need ONE replacement spring for my SDB.
  18. My GF shoots USPSA.... and has been in the sport longer than I have. We shoot together and have fun. But I do NOT RO her.
  19. FWIW, I cracked an STI slide last year during a match. Just had the top end rebuilt with a Caspian.... We'll see how it goes.
  20. Gotcha. Most of the STI and SVI .40 mags I have seen rattle a little. Its normal in my opinion and not a problem. The ones I am currently using have rattled some since day one, Brazos tuned tubes, Grams guts, and Dawson pads.
  21. You sure? Most of my STI mags rattle. I can sometimes make them stop by slapping on them, or pushing the rounds down and letting them spring back up..... but they work 100% rattle or not. I have a hard time believing they would work perfectly over and over again if the follower was tilting/turning over?
  22. There are VERY few models of ear muffs that I would consider wearing alone (without plugs) while participating in our sport. They just do not offer enough protection for the type of noise we experience during a match. I wear a pair of molded plugs, and a pair of pro ears golds on top. With the pro ears turned all the way up, I can communicate normaly, but I'm also getting tons of protection. You dont get a second chance with your hearing....
