  1. Gun show tables work OK. There's a bunch of good info here I'm sure a search will turn up. A decent web site can also bring in shooters.
  2. I asked this once of some local Bullseye shooters. They liked the ultradot since it's small and can be mounted directly to the slide. It comes with a tiny dot and has nice repeatable settings (unlike, say a C-more)
  3. Brian sent me a bunch of stuff last year that he claimed was for being such a helpful guy.. Can't remember if the 'contributor of the month' term was used or not, but at least some of the forumites voted.
  4. Cool, I thought it worked like that. Yeah there are a few fringe problems like possibly erasing holes or wierdos with Mech-Techs or maybe 45 Colt leverguns, but I think they're outweighed by the "shoot 'em as you want" aspect.
  5. "Driving to [the match location] does not make you a better shooter" Shoot within your current ability and you'll be fine.
  6. I used to have one of those Lew Horton .41 Mag 3" 657 snubbies. It came with blocky wood grips, but it was still never really fun to shoot. Ended up trading it for a 3" 610, which was a better deal all around.
  7. Ditto what Flex said. Gun shows also sometimes have good deals on bulk ammo. Just don't buy anything too wierd like 1940s corrosive ball (saw that in Sportsmans Guide the other day) 1000 rounds a month is a heck of a lot, especially if you're just getting started. Dry-fire is your salvation..
  8. Shoot the Steel Challenge in under 80. Preferably at the big match in CA
  9. I have an AR, works just fine. But the Mech-Tech is more fun, and I shoot local 3-gun purely for the fun of it. That I can beat all the AR's with it (including some Wakal guy just adds to the fun. But, the central issue remains-- how can you score "shoot 'em with whatever" targets when two of the blasters may be at different PF's, yet a shoot a similar caliber?
  10. VV has some heavy-bullet loads in .38 Super that come close. Max load of N105 and a 147 XTP listed right at 190 PF, and they have a N105/124 FMJ-FP combo that lists at 197.6 PF (I'm a little suspect of this load..). VV doesn't list any 9x23 loads with N105 , and their max 9x21 loads are way down in the 165 PF range.
  11. My local club is independant. When it was set up, it was the only club in a 100 mile radius. Thus the independant part. Now there are 3 clubs in range, but nobody as yet has explained why we would want a 3-club "section" in terms that overcome the inertia of the way things are.
  12. Hmm.. given the previous couple passes at the IDPA rulebook (and the many USPSA rulebooks), I'm not sure that anybody can cover all the loopholes.
  13. How about instead of an open-ended "voluntary" and "optional", give it a set trial period, say 3 or 5 years. After that if it doesn't get made into a real division it sunsets. No worries about "is it still viable?" or "should it be continued", On 1/1/2008 (or whatever) the BOD will decide to fish or cut bait. Sunsets work for us.
  14. Think of it as a way to count firings of the brass.. Actually, I think they erase each other after a while
  15. At our local matches we only can go to 50 or so yards. The M-T works excellent for that. 3" at 100 yds is about as good as it gets.. Besides, you should recognize at least half of mine.. the STI half at least I think you built it, and I know you've been at 3-gun matches I shot it at. But what's the point of a scoring system that only works at big matches?
  16. SR and SP primers are the same size. Material and cup thickness varies of course.
  17. Has anybody else tried shooting an 8-shot in Production? It's a non-trivial undertaking just to be compliant with the rules, and you're still nowhere near competitive.
  18. "Boosting" (on a 1911 design) is pushing hard on the hammer spur while pulling the trigger. It's usually done right after a trigger job and the theory is it seats the mating surfaces a bit better (as well as rounding off the corners of the hammer & sear). Doing it too much or at other times may cause more harm than good (see: rounding corners)
  19. So how do we score a target with 4 .38-size holes on it, one A, one B, one C & one D? The shooter shot at it twice with a 38 open gun (Major) and twice with a 38 super Mech-Tech rifle (Minor)
  20. Nobody likes my same-caliber rifle/pistol strawman so how about this one: Shooter shoots an 'upper-A/B zone only' target with rifle. 1 A, 1 miss.. calls the miss leaving the position. A while later in the stage pulls out the ol .45 and plugs another A on there. Right over (and thus erasing) the .223 hole. "It's a double!" "Why with all this straw I could make a house!"
  21. I bet it (subtraction) takes too long to explain to the TV folks.
  22. T1 works OK for pistol targets that move. AR500 is better, but much much harder to find in small quantities.
  23. This one is crying out for a ruling from USPSA. It seems that people have shot it in paper, popper, paper, popper order, and gotten valid scores back from Sedro. Given that, they should fix the stage description so that's explicitly allowed and let us run. It's the easiest way to fix it. Those of us that shot it how it's written can suffer with lower %'s until we shoot it again. Those that shot it the 'wrong' way, but the RO let them, will have accurate (instead of too-high) percentages. Did I mention that our RO made us shoot paper then poppers?
  24. But, but.. that option plate was cool. Annoying to explain to new steel shooters, but cool.
  25. The only time I think that would be a problem is if you could erase two hits with one shot. Otherwise the pistol shot score will be equivalent to or better than the rifle score (excepting again the masochists shooting Major rifle and Minor pistol)
