  1. I use Rudy photochromic clear for everything. I thought about trying the red because of the popularity here, but I shoot a lot of IDPA, which has low/no light stages, and red would have too little light transmission for that. If you don't shoot in the dark, I'd give the red a try.
  2. I think USPSA's acquisition of Steel Challenge is the best solution to this. I don't want to see addition of a 22 division water down USPSA. I have no problem with level one match directors letting kids shoot for no score with 22s, but that's where it should stop. Steel Challenge is the perfect place for centerfire and 22 to coexist.
  3. Were his loaded from the same lot of powder? Solo 1000 has HUGE lot to lot variation in pistol applications. The lot I have takes 3.7gr to make 134PF for me with the same bullet, OAL, and gun as JeffWard; his only takes 3.4. Every time you change lots, you really need to start at the minimum and work up again.
  4. When I got today's Maku Mozo, I thought it was very relevant to Top Shot: When you're betting for stones in an archery contest, you shoot with skill. When you're betting for fancy belt buckles, you worry about your aim. And when you're betting for real gold, you're a nervous wreck. Your skill is the same in all three cases - but because one prize means more to you than another, you let outside concerns weigh on your mind. He who looks too hard at the outside gets clumsy on the inside. -Chuang Tzu
  5. This isn't necessarily true. A GM is within 5% of the high hit factor. This doesn't necessarily mean they're in the top 5% of the distribution. In open, the top 3% of classified shooters are GMs. In production, it's 1%.
  6. This will never work for TV. How did it go the last time you tried to explain USPSA scoring to someone new?
  7. To me it can be pretty simple: If you shoot IDPA also, 45. If you shoot Limited in USPSA and already have a 40 load worked up, then 40. If neither of these is true, it's probably a toss up. I'd lean 45 because it's easier to find mags and you can start with a relatively inexpensive factory gun.
  8. Great shooting Aaron. Your hard work on your shooting is paying off. Also, thanks for all the hard work you put in to this match. I was hoping for a match bump this match too, but I made some serious mental errors. You're absolutely right on sometimes shooting with your friends is a distraction. I need to focus on taking enough time to visualize the stage and get my plan down. I also need to fix my high primer issue. I'm hoping that I can take my poor performance in this match as motivation to get back in to regular practice. I can't let you and JN have all the fun in EX without me.
  9. How did he get his gun to the range without a holster or bag? I'm fine with bending the rules to allow a newbie to try out the game instead of sending him home, but not the safety rules. Gun comes out of bag at MR, and goes back in at IFCHDH.
  10. That's why I'll never shoot a DA gun without a decocker. I just don't need to take that chance. Sorry we missed you at NER.
  11. I'm happy to borrow your guns while you're gone. Will someone else be at home while you're traveling? How public are you in general about your gun ownership and shooting sports activity?
  12. I liked WST in 9mm with 147gr Precisions. IIRC it was 3.2gr at 1.120 gave me around 130ish PF. I've heard bad things about WST pressure wise for 115gr loads, but it worked great with 147s. I shoot Solo 1000 now, but I think I actually liked WST a bit better, so I may go back after my keg of S1k is done. I found the load data on this forum. There's a thread somewhere where someone tested 6 or 8 powders with 147gr molys in 9mm.
  13. As long as he leaves moderation of any threads about USPSA organizational issues to the other mods, I see no problem. I don't know Kyle personally, but I'm 100% sure he'd avoid any issues.
  14. Are you shooting L10 (major) or production(minor)?
  15. I use comp-tac belt holsters and ready tactical holsters from CPWSA. Both are great. I hear good things about BladeTech also.
  16. I sent mine back for the same reason, but I just had them replace it with 4 singles. There wasn't enough room to get my fingers inbetween mags 3 and 4 comfortably.
  17. CrossFit seems to vary a ton. There's some great people and some that are kinda cultish. Glassman seems to be a bit of an ass. That said, CF has made the huge accomplishment of getting a ton of people to realize that training takes hard work. So many 'trainers' at commercial gyms seem to set up programs for their ease and the client's comfort rather than the client's goals. Crossfit has made strides in changing that trend.
  18. Sounds like fun to me. I probably wouldn't make the trip to TN, but if someone put on one of these within a day's drive of me I'd shoot it. I'd have to shoot modified unless I bought a 1911 with GI style sights. I think most people would be in this situation. I'd venture to say that most M1s (both Garands and Carbines) out there are in GI configuration, and obviously most 1911s are not.
  19. I load random range brass that's been sitting out for who knows how long. 9 minor brass lasts a long time.
  20. Did you notice how slick his position setups were in the knife challenge? Full run to a dead stop at the exact spot, pause for a second and make a good throw. Shows how the IPSC skills transfer to even the non-shooting challenges.
  21. Manville, RI on the 3rd Sunday of the month. Typically a 4 stage match, 2 field courses, a speed shoot, and a classifier. New Bedford, MA is also pretty close to Prov, on the 4th sunday. Usually 5 stages. Harvard, MA is about an hour drive, but they put on the biggest matches in the area at 6 stages. Check out http://uspsa-ne.org.
  22. Check out the CTD interview with Denny: http://cheaperthandirt.com/blog/?p=3416 He said prior to Top Shot, he hadn't fired live ammo in 10 years!
  23. Everyone keeps saying this, but it'll never happen. That's what shooters want to see, but it's not what brings in the mainstream audience. If it was a pure shooting competition, it'd be on some obscure cable channel no one gets.
  24. Shot a 6 stage classifier in March and was just barely in D class in Production. Shot 2 club matches in May and moved up to C. In IDPA started as an ESP novice, made ESP/MM, switched to SSP/MM, got a match bump to SS at Maine states last fall. My most recent classifier was about 6 seconds shy of SSP/EX.
  25. I bought a used single stage press, reloaded about 50 rounds on it and dumped it for a Hornady Lock 'n' Load. The only way I'd go with a single stage is if money was VERY tight. If you're loading in any kind of volume, go for the LnL or the 650. The LnL vs 650 is close, they each have their good points. The LnL is cheaper to get started with, but once you add the case feeder, cost is about the same.
