  1. The US Steel Shoot will be hosting the Smith & Wesson Steel Shoot Series NW Regional in Albany, OR on September 26-28, 2008. Applications are up at www.ussteelshoot.com. This is a great time of year to be in Oregon. Smith & Wesson has already donated some great guns for the prize table. If you've got any questions shoot me a PM. I look forward to seeing you folks there.
  2. I'm going the other way. I think it's safer and faster to shoot the last round out into the target. (Assuming your match is bassackwards enough to require grounding an empty gun) The problem I have with folks racking the action is it really doesn't mean much if you screw the order up, which I see alot. Example: Finish string, rack round out (oohh look at the pretty round go flying through the air, I have an empty gun) and then drop mag. Happens enough during UASC with the pistol when it's not on the clock. I know folks that have done with with the rifle on the clock. I also see all sorts of weird variations of racking the action when folks are running to dump the gun. The muzzle goes strange places. If you shoot the last round out on the target, bang, bang, dump mag, pull trigger till it stops going bang. If it keeps going bang, you have done something wrong. The safest way is grounding the hot gun in a safe direction. Despite what some folks seem to think, it will not sprout legs and go on a killing rampage all by itself.
  3. Any chance that's what Steve Anderson was drinking after the 06 Nats in Tulsa? Flex, come on out to Oregon some time. We actually have good beer here. If the beer is certified red, I think I would pass in the future.
  4. I've carried backup guns to all the matches I fly to for several years now. I normally don't mess with it for local matches. I've had to use them a few times. Sometimes for a gun breaking, other times for sights going wonky (and yes that is the technical term). I've also loaned them out a few times to folks whose guns broke or had other problems. The way I look at it is, if the match I'm shooting cost more than the gun, I'm dang well bringing a backup. The faster the Division, the more likely you are to need a backup gun it seems. Production, sometimes, but most parts can be replaced in the field, Limited, getting a little more specialized, little more prone to breakage. Open guns, you might as well travel with a gunsmith.
  5. Are the results going to be posted somewhere so the rest of us can see how bad Turtle self destructed?
  6. Nope. Amidon ruled that the forward cocking serrations make it different enough from factory that it is not legal for Production.
  7. California Competition Works makes a 4 pocket (each holds two) storage pouch for AR Mags. Brownells carries them. I've got several in different colors.
  8. We mentioned that they weren't doing the "option" plate any more but they still used it.
  9. For those folks who cannot make the match but would like to contribute you can send a check, payable to Karen Holm, Tim's wife to the Salem Police Dept. The address is: Ofc. Tim Holm C/O Lt. Anglemier Salem Police Department 555 Liberty St. SE Rm 130 Salem, OR 97301 Thank you for all the support so far.
  10. We've heard from the top gunsmiths working on XD's and one of the top gunsmiths working on M&P's. Everyone is saying that you can't safely remove the rearward camming aspect of the sear on the striker without causing the gun to go full auto. If it's camming the striker back, that seems to be enough to rule that the gun is acceptable for Production. I know you've looked at your dad's M&P, but I'm going to take the word of the guys working on the guns. If they say the sear moves the striker back, I trust them. Despite Wikipedia says, if NROI and Amidon have decided that the gun is suitable for Production by virtue of it being a DA trigger, I'm going to go with their ruling as well. Nothing you've said, despite your hypothetical hump removing trigger job, has led me to believe that anyone has ever made a DA gun SAO. Show me an example and I'll reconsider my position. If Mike is right that the modification you suggest makes the gun double, then it's really a moot point and we're only engaging in a discussion that has no useful purpose.
  11. The Columbia Cascade Section is running two charity matches in August. The first is at Albany Rifle and Pistol Club on August 9th. The second will be at Tri-County Gun Club in Sherwood, OR on August 17th. All the proceeds of both matches will go to Tim Holm and his family. Tim is a long time USPSA competitor. His daughter just joined our CCS Junior Program as well. Tim was involved in a motorcycle crash earlier this month and was pretty badly injured. His most severe injury is a broken neck. He has been in the ICU for about the last three weeks and still does not have any feeling below mid chest. Tim will require long term rehabilitation and he's going to need some help. The entry fee will be $20.00 for each match. We'll be selling stage mulligans as well. If you screw a stage up, try it again. We'll also have a silent auction or two as well as maybe some other goodies we're still working on. Also at the Albany match, I'll bring my M-16 and Glock 18 for a little full auto fun. All the proceeds from these matches will go to Tim's family. And I mean all of it. We'll have info up on the section website soon at www.columbia-cascade.org. Attached is the flier for the match. Please come out and help us raise some money to help Tim out. If you have any questions, my email and number are on the flier. Tim_Holm.doc
  12. Manny Bragg won for the pros, one target ahead of Dave Sevigny. Shannon was third, Taran fourth and Jerry 5th. On the Amateur side, Greg Martin won overall. I don't recall all of the class winners. Great match, great prize table. Apparently my shooting buddy already signed me up to come down and staff it again next year.
  13. I just bought a wheelgun, disassembled it to clean it and lost the cylinder release bearing and spring. Ordered the new parts from Brownells and managed to launch the bearing again. Fortunately I ordered two. Now if I can just find all the dang spare parts that are hiding in my shop.
  14. Is that a slip? I've seen Bruce shoot Irons, and he manages to hold his own.
  15. Got done shooting today about 1:15 PM. The match went really quick today, hopefully tomorrow and Sunday will be the same. It was hot today, heat index 103, but it's supposed to get hotter the next couple of days. This is definitely a different strategy than most USPSA matches. There may be one or two shooters per stage that get all the targets on the Pro squad. For everyone else, plan on not shooting everything. And with that being the case plan your strategy accordingly. Some arrays are worth skipping. And there are a lot of times there may be one target left on an array. It's probably better to move on and reload on the run than to do a standing reload for one target. It's really an interesting match. The best part is, USSA looks awesome. There's paved parking lots, the air conditioned lodge is complete, and real grass on the stages. You don't even sink 6 inches into the mud on every stage. This is one of the funnest matches I've shot in a long time. I'm sorry I'm done shooting. Good luck and drink lots of water. I'll see you on Stage 7
  16. Typical over reaction. It's not much of a joust if I'm only using a needle!
  17. Get an M1A and shoot Heavy Metal. That's where all the antiques hang out. Hi Kurt
  18. CDNN is running a sale apparently on some of the FN PBR's. The barrelled actions, complete less stock were $400.00 and supposedly they are getting some stocks in next week that will sell for $120.00. Not sure what the condition is going to be, but for $520.00 I couldn't pass them up. Hopefully I'll be able to find some mags for them, they sound a bit hard to come by.
  19. My understanding, and I could be wrong, was that as long is it was more than 10 feet away and contained within the berms it wasn't a DQ. I've seen it once or twice where the RO actually had to measure from the shooter to the bullet impact to see if they were still legal. Sounds like in your case your trying to gain too much speed on the draw and tripping the trigger early. For USPSA draw speed really is not that much of an issue. You'll see more of an improvement if you work on movement and target transitions.
  20. I just love their definition of a Machine gun as any gun that holds over 12 rounds. I didn't realize my 10/22, and almost every single handgun I own is a machine gun. I'm curious how they will view the 1911 as well. Sure commonly you can't get more than 8-10 rounds in one but I have seen 15 round .45 single stack mags. Guess that's a machine gun too.
  21. Yep, the give tours. The reloading stuff isn't manufactured there, but it is assembled and boxed. You also a get a tour of the super secret Mini Gun building facility, model shop where they build the models they shoot at in the videos and the aircraft hangar. It's actually a pretty cool tour. BTW, Dillon isn't the only game in town for mini-guns anymore. Garwood Industries is also manufacturing them. Dillon never used to sell post samples to anyone. Now that Garwood is on scene they finally started selling them. Of course even with Garwood being the cheaper of the two, $57,000.00 is still a good chunk of change.
  22. Well except for last year with paper targets at 400 and the year before with steel at 350ish.
  23. I got tired of waiting for my CR Speed revolver holster to come in from Brownells so I bought a Limcat Holster from Johnny when he was up for the Area 1 match. Now the CR Speed showed up and I have two Revolver race holsters. Which is a better bet for USPSA and ICORE? I'll be using them with the same lenght bbl, 5" 627 or 625. Has anyone had any problems with either?
