Pezco
Brass monkey, whore or range chicken is all fine with me as long as they aren't taking my well marked brass before I have a chance to pick it up.
Mbauer67
I just have very limited free time and I have not made the plunge into reloading yet. I have made good friends with a local reloader, so the price savings are not a big deal. Two quick thoughts: 1. Your local reloader might charge you even less if you gave him some used brass. 2. I'd pick it up and store it in coffee containers in your basement - one day you WILL reload, and then you'll kick yourself for losing all that brass. a couple challenges with your suggestions 1. The discount he gives for brass is so small its not even funny. 2. I don't drink coffee 3. I live in CA so i don't have a basement 4. I already have 3000 pcs of brass saved for when I start reloading. Good thought though
Will_M
You'd be shocked at how fast 3k pieces goes away. I remember buying a 5k box and thinking "psh I'll never need brass again in my LIFE." That was a year ago. I've still got some of that box left but that's only because I scrounge every bit of it after I'm done shooting it. I've since bought about 10k more. BillD
Actually, fellow shooters in the next booth--noticing that I was shooting .45ACP--would often ask me if I reloaded my rounds, and would then offer me their (wonderful, once-used) brass. Which I graciously accepted. But that's not "whoring", that's accepting gifts.[/b] Now we're just haggling price
Mbauer67
I am pretty passionate about picking up one thing from the range during tear down, used shotgun hulls. I hate when people leave a big pile of them on the range, it makes our beautiful range look so trashy. Pick up your hulls people!
Steve J
if someone threw money around, I'd pick that up, too. brass = required reloading component why would I buy what my nutwizard can get for free? Because my internet source sells once-fired, sorted by headstamp and already shinny clean brass at a reasonable price.
COMATZD
At one of the matches I shoot the owners keep the leftover brass. You are only supposed to pick up your brass and before you leave the stage. Once the match is over, brass belongs to the range...

GrumpyOne
(stands up) Hi, I'm SiG Lady and I USED TO BE a brass whore. Now, however (thanks to my whoring diligence early on), I have more than I'll ever need. Oh, and we used to call them "range rats." Actually, fellow shooters in the next booth--noticing that I was shooting .45ACP--would often ask me if I reloaded my rounds, and would then offer me their (wonderful, once-used) brass. Which I graciously accepted. But that's not "whoring", that's accepting gifts. SiG Lady, you had class, so you weren't a "Brass Whore", more than likely you were a "Brass Escort"! JeffWard
I don't keep my brass... now. But with the way things are going with this economy, I'm thinking of buying a net... and following shooters through the COF. Catch it clean... Or painting all my brass "off-gold" and claiming all of it as mine... Jeff Edited June 23, 2010 by JeffWard

lugnut
This thread is funny. I'm a recovering brass whore... although I never take anyone's brass unless they don't want it. That being said I will take it when I can get it without too much effort these days. I don't bother at matches- like someone else said- I want my focus on the match stages and nothing else... besides sometimes the SO/ROs take the brass and the end of the match as a small perk for their efforts and they should! Even though I'm shooting 9mm... cases are still in the $25/1000 range- that can get expensive with the amount of shooting I do. I hate when people show up at matches and collect as much brass as they can, just to turn around and sell it- they don't even pay attention to the damn match hardly! Honest to God! Our club is changing our policies at matches now to prohibit this.
Revopop
Brass whore is the term I'm most familiar with. I first heard it from needknees. He was running his foot back and forth over the grass looking for empty cases. He said, "You know what this is? The Brass Whore Shuffle." Not a problem for me, I use moonclips so I get all my brass back! I got so much .45ACP brass that when I shoot single stack I just leave it laying there for the other shooters who want it after the match. Where I used to live in Iowa, there was a free public range that was only slightly out of my way between work and home. 2 or 3 times a week, I'd stop on my way home from work and check for brass. Always got at least a couple dozen, best I ever did on one of those trips was 300 pieces of once fired nickel .45ACP brass. I still have some of those, too. recovering19A
Brass whores... Reminds me of a friend, when he did terrible on a stage, said he was shaking like a whore in church. Do Brass whores shake in church? Only go to church if there's brass to pick up.

Putty
I really like the guys that show up for our matches, follow our squad and pick up our brass. I forgot to mention that they are not shooting and when thanked for picking up our brass they say "its not yours".

John Heiter
IMO I would define them like this. Brass Rat/Monkey: Someone who scrambles around during/after a match picking up brass with the intention of getting their own back and maybe getting some extra if someone doesn't want theirs back. Brass Whore: The guy who picks up brass every time he sees it. He has 5 gallon cans of brass at home in calibers he doesn't even own that he's picked up 'cause you never know. Brasshole: The guy who picks up brass he has no right to. Ex. picking up brass after a shooter and neither offering it back to the shooter nor putting it into the stage bucket to be divided up later. Once the brass has been "abandoned" after the event is over by those who have a legitimate claim to it (the shooter or the match staff at lost brass matches) then it's fair game and I admire the people who have the drive to collect it. Before it is officially abandoned... brasshole. Brass Rat/Monkey/Whore are terms of respect in my book. It's when you drop below those that I'm going to have a problem. Jim M ammo Yeap, it's the same case here in Colorado. I have never heard of anyone complaining that they didn't get their brass back. In fact, very few people around here even mark their brass because the "pick up crew" is so efficient. The few pieces of brass that do not match the caliber of the most recent shooter go on a table right next to the WSB where their rightful owner can retrieve them. When everyone in that squad has shot, and if no one has yet claimed it, then it is available to whomever wants it. Interestingly enough most shooters just walk right past it as it remains there until the end of the match when it goes into the club's "scrap brass" bucket. BillD
I had a guy at a local match that was picking up my brass. Now I don't even pick up my brass at matches but this guy pissed me off. He didn't ask, he had most of it picked up by the time I got done walking with the Ro to inspect targets, etc. I walked up to him and stuck my hand out and said, "That's my brass." He didn't like it but he gave it to me. Brasshole, aptly named.
