  1. Yep. I have the same issues as the OP. Two kids, wife, bills, guilt when I'm not at home. It's not so much about the money as I work side jobs to afford to play. It's just the feeling that I'm leaving my wife home alone to manage the kids all day by herself. I only shoot one club match a month and during the peak season, two matches a month. When we had just one kid, I'd bring him to the match to give my wife a "free day" to herself. With my son (5y/o) at the range, I shoot like crap because I'm so worried about him. So that doesn't really work out too well either. He does enjoy coming to the range though. I cook 90% of the meals we eat. It's become the norm for me to cook so there is no guilt relief there. We've talked about it before, my point was I just wanted 2 days a month that I can go out and shoot guilt free. When she tells me to "Have fun, good luck" on my way out the door I shoot SO much better because I "allow" myself to enjoy it. Working around the house to make sure everything is in order before I go helps. But then that becomes the norm too. One thing that helped was determining what "to-do" items my wife wanted done around the house that she felt I was skipping so I could go shoot. That was a biggie. Especially during the peak match season because I'm out of town at least once a month. I also share my shooting-budget money with her so she can enjoy some extra pampering too. I took the family to Gattlinburg over spring break and rented a two story cabin overlooking the Smokey Mountains. All paid without using our salaried income. Family trips, not revolving around shooting, go a long way too.
  2. I like that you can shoot the IDPA classifiers again and again. Encourages you to shoot it the best you can. If not part of a sanctioned match, you can even reshoot a stage if you have a major brain dump. I like that too. I would rather be overclassified than under. Can't be called a 'bagger if you hold the top classification. I'm not counted the new "super master" they just invented.
  3. Thanks for posting. Good info. Also, if you don't want anybody listening to you with your phone, take the battery out. I'm not secret squirrel enough to have to do that.
  4. The manual (Army) doesn't figure in the formula. That leads me to believe that 35-40ftlbs is while using the tool, attached to torque wrench. Pretty much overkill to do the math.
  5. I dare you to shoot open with a dotted single stack. Yes. It will be done in time.
  6. This is a HINT! Good luck drilling/tapping the EGW catch for an extended button. They are Rockwell hardness of drill bits and taps, apparently, because they eat them.
  7. It's known as being a 'quiet professional'. Those that have to brag about their skills rarely have any. George has bothered me from the start. His attitude is crap. Hopefully when he loses the show he'll gain some humility. Probably not. I wasn't a fan of Jaime just because he was the quiet one with little TV time, until the hating started. Now I'm rooting for him just to upset the "plan" of the others. Even if he is "just" a rescue swimmer, what does it matter? He can shoot. After his outburst I was glad to see Ashley go. Not very professional, and I'm glad they aired it. To answer an earlier question, yes there is some general animosity amung the different brances. Mostly it's good natured ribbing.
  8. Driving the speed limit saves on gas money too. Camping cuts out the second largest expense. I have tent camped for years and given the right tent and campsite it is quite comfortable. KOA's are good for that. Don't want to risk tenting in the rain, KOA's have Kabins and bunk houses. I have a KOA discount card for the reduced rate. If applicable, Government hotel rates are usually cheaper than AAA. Check out Groupon too.
  9. Make sure to check that your firing pin does not protrude at all into the breach face. Some earlier ext. pins would poke out just a bit. I can run a 17#, but I prefer to install 19's to ensure ignition. The difference in recoil feel will be up to you. I don't think you'll notice the 2lb difference. You can also tinker with the profile of the firing pin stop to change the feel too.
  10. Any 1911 can replicate this if you take the grip safety off and thumb the hammer back. It over rotates and will stay down. Your issue is that it does it with the grip safety on. The first thing to check if it stays back during LIVE fire. If it functions 100% at the range, don't bother changing it. When you thumb the hammer back to dry fire, just push it back up so the hook is resting on the sear again.
  11. If it's a simple blowback in 9mm....YIKES! There is a reason the MP5 uses roller delayed blowback, and the UZI bolt is fairly heavy. There must be something in there. I wish I could inspect it. Could you post a couple pics of the slide and barrel removed from the slide?
  12. http://www.m1911.org/ncg.htm http://ncggasgun.com/barreldetails/ Just a guess. I was facinated with this concept a few years ago.
  13. It happens from time to time. Clean the underside of the slide, brass collects on it adding friction. The slide is pulling the round forward. One goes in the barrel, the round under that gets dragged forward by the slide. Check mag lip dimensions. Replace mag springs. Clean entire pistol. Just some things to try.
  14. Spent the time to craft a FS thread, previewed it, then X'd the window. AAAAAAARRRRRGGGGG!
  15. Some people react differently to adrenalin. Good advice in here so far. The key is to practice shooting while amped up, like you are in a match. Elevated heart rate training. However you get it done, it is important. It's not controlling the adrenalin but using it to your advantage.
  16. Now to see it done with a single stack.
  17. I like the STI sear spring better. It's the one with thinned legs. To check if your getting inertia caused hammer follow, put side pressure on the trigger and drop the slide with your weak grip. By holding the trigger in place it takes that out of the equation.
  18. Blade tech or Comp-tac holster would be the best route. I use a Comp-tac locking paddle on my CR speed belt. Yes on Single stack division.
  19. I've built my own limited guns for a while now. I'm very picky and particular and feel that only I can build a gun that I'll be happy with. I've bought prebuilt guns before only to be disappointed. That said, last night I asked Bobby to put me on the list for an FGW Limited gun.
  20. Without going into too much detail: Keep your upper torso as vertical as you can, if you dip your outside elbow down (angled lean out) your shots have a much higher chance of going wide/low. I see it all the time in training. We see better with our eyes parrallel to the ground, if you lean out at an angle your eyes are also at an angle. This distorts your visual perception. It's not that you can't hit the target while leaning out at even a 45* angle, if the sights are aligned, you will hit. The problem is with our balance and vision while leaned over. Trying to go as fast as possible is when this usually becomes an issue. I haven't even mentioned recoil management while leaning over... To help keep the gun and head vertical, make it a point to keep your outside elbow up (level when leaning out). Just my .02
  21. I don't have a back up gun so I bring tools. Yep, sneered off barrel lugs is equal to Kaboom. Gun is done unless you have a spare barrel (which I do for some).
  22. Small is too small for me. You can stipple the removable back strap. That is changing it beyond factory specs. Here is an interesting thought. Which back strap is used for the scale? The large is obviously heavier as it has more mass. So.... run the small and "put" that weight up front. I found it rediculous that you can't stipple under the trigger guard. I don't understand that one at all. You can stipple the WHOLE grip, but don't carry it under the trigger guard. Weird. I personally don't like the trigger guard rough at all so it doesn't matter for me...I'm just sayin'.
  23. If you get the short block kit you are limited in frame and slide options. Almost cheaper to start with an Eagle, swap barrel with comp and optic. At least you will know it ran before you started. If you like a challange and want to learn what it takes, then that's different. That's how I started. Barrel fitment on an open gun is more in depth than a limited gun. Just FYI. It can still be done with files....and a hacksaw. I just had to put that in there.
