  1. My best stages have been shot while thinking 3 steps ahead of where I'm at. This reduced the "thinking" about shooting. The shooting was all automatic, I was focusing on staying on my plan. Some of the stages at Alabama were very lengthy, difficult stages. If the shot required a more precise sight picture, that was in my plan. My best split times were all autopilot shots. I'm sure I had a good sight picture but my plan included shooting "that target" fast, or "that target" with precision. Immediately after the stage I had no concrete memory of anything specific about the stage. On the fast targets I pulled splits I could never do when trying to go fast. Trigger freeze is the result when I "try". I almost want to get a hat cam so I know what it looks like to shoot a stage.
  2. I shot a big match in OH a few years ago. Gun had two hammer falls right at the end of my 3rd stage. I ran back to the safe area, tore my 2011 down, pulled out my jig and stone, reassembled after trigger job and made it back to the next stage in time to shoot. It ran 100% the rest of the day. I shot OH state last year with a brand new, un-broken in gun. That was me hammering on my 2011 mags to close up the feed lips, then I polished the chamfer on the slide's stripper rail. The gun ran 100% after that. I just didn't have time to fully test it before the match. Unservicable to me means it went Ka-Boom.
  3. I hear you. I'm the same. Loading mags before practice, if I see someone else loading too my brain starts the race. It's a good thing I'm smart enough not to race behind the wheel (public roads) but it doesn't stop me from trying to "compete" at other things. I swear I'm the fastest at changing a diaper...
  4. Yeah, HOA is the goal. LOL. All I have to do is beat the national champion. No problem right? Right. I just hope to have as much fun as I did last year. Last year I shot a borrowed FGW gun, this year I'll have my own, hopefully.
  5. Nice reloads on stage 6. You shot well dude. I can't wait to start training for nationals. I see some things you and I both need to work on. Did I mention I can't wait to shoot SS again?
  6. I would try 17's off and on. The main reason to run a 17 is to lighten the trigger pull, however it can also effect how you feel the recoil. Depends on your FP stop profile, but the main spring can effect slide speed a bit. If you have a good trigger with a 19, and like the way the slide cycles, it will be more reliable with the 19. If the slide feels sluggish you can reprofile the FP stop to still be able to use the 19. If you run the 17, be sure to install a longer firing pin and don't use an extra power firing pin spring, use a standard one.
  7. Every thursday. Arrive at 530ish. We try to go hot at 6. 3 stages in a climate controlled range. Last week we had some rather large courses. Industry Rd in Lexington. We have many new shooters that are just getting their feet wet as well as some of us that have been around a little while. It's a good time.
  8. But the 773's aren't split in the front like the 771's. They are both good, but I like the 1's!
  9. Safariland 771's are the fastest. If you get lazy on the pull, the mags will come out the front. It helps when you're on your 4th or 5th reload. Cheaper than CR's too. I use 771's for my limited rig too.
  10. I used a solid vice and brass punch for my night sights. If they are too tight, I fit the sight to the dovetail. They tap in snug, but not impossible to move. I go by sound. Once the tap goes from a thud to a ping, stop. Too tight. I've tried pushers but don't really like them.
  11. If the slide is 1/8" open, when you pull the trigger it closes. Mimics the feel of a light strike. RWS does this for me unless I use a 13 or stronger recoil spring. All other ammo runs with my 11lb spring. Does your pistol have a trigger job?
  12. Plan to shoot two A's as fast as you can. If you drop a couple C's it's not a game ender but if your goal is A's, you'll hit more A's. Speed comes with experience. Fast sounds cool, until you see your score. I experimented at the Alabama match two weeks ago. I tried to burn down each stage, run it as hard as I could. Shooting minor I gave up some points but my times were good. If you watch the video (link in sig line) you'll see that I look like a bull in a china shop at times. What I learned from watching the video is that I need to back off the speed one step sooner before I shoot. Back it down 5% to gain more points and smoothness. Speed is nothing without control. Not that I was out of control, but I accepted C's and a few D's in the quest for the quickest time.
  13. Two mags should be good to get started. Just fill em up.
  14. Then again, you can take the large and shave it down. I wanted the large for the filler at the web of my hand but didn't like the width. I shaved it down to feel like a small (width) and shaped the back as flat as the medium.
  15. I should be there on thursday. It would be a great way to get back into the swing of things for you.
  16. It's called a Field Reject gage. If it closes on the Field gage, it fails headspace. If it fails, change bolt and cam pin and retest. I always change cam pins at the same time as they wear too. I've never seen new parts fail HS. Usually, if the gun fails the HS gaging the barrel will also swallow the throat erosion gage (unservicable barrel).
  17. Guys on TV are using .22lr rifles to pop gators so I think the 12 gage "kill stick" is a bit dramatic. The reason you use a "boom stick" on sharks is because water reduces the effectiveness of a spring loaded action. The water cooled AR's were a bit much. They found 725* after 300 rounds air cooled. Then ran ONE 30 round mag through the "water cooled" barrel and found 82*. Huh? Then claimed a 60% reduction in temp. HUH? Will's "don't try this at home, kids" is just too much at times. The ass chewing ending with "don't confuse this with a conversation" is just over the top. I couldn't work for him. One, I'm a skilled craftsman. Two, his attitude towards his employees.
  18. You're handicapping yourself? I saw him shoot the past few days.....I'm not sure its much of a handy cap just a ugly gun Yep. True, the M&P is not as sexy as my 1911.
  19. Just heard on the radio it's a redo of a song from Bob Dylan. His version was actually worse.
