  1. a couple showed up to today's icore match today with airweight snubs and factory .38s, and by the second stage the lady was bleeding from the cylinder latch!
  2. i did a local idpa last month with my sp101 2-1/4". i have hogue wood grips on it, a homemade FO sight, my usual carry high noon IWB holster, and i used hks loaders with two chintzy double pouches from uncle mike's. i just wanted some practice with my carry stuff, and while i shoot the gun well enough, the reloads sure are ugly!
  3. a single action would sure be easier to keep the cylinder lined up. what cartridge do you guys think would be the easiest to make accurate? i shoot 100 meter nra silhouettes, sometimes with my 627 V8, and it's not the gun that's doing all the missing. i'm using 158 speer or nosler jhp's, 10.5 blue dot, sorted and trimmed cases, and fed 200 primers. i've tried a bunch of other stuff, some of which worked just as well but cost more. i have a contender also, with 10" .22lr and .30-30 barrels. not a revo, though.
  4. 610-646 is as close as we'll get to a .41 special, and royal blue and kydex won't get along! besides, colts turn the wrong way.
  5. A guy at my club last week had one go "poof", left an empty in the chamber of an auto because it didn't cycle, but the bullet made it out. CCI blazer alu. case. I'm not sure what kind of gun, some sort of plastic bottomfeeder. do no powder squibs generally tie the gun up? I keep a squib rod in my bag to ward them off, it's worked so far.
  6. Bob, they turned out really great! I'd say from the pics even better than the ones hogue made for you. Congrats!
  7. I know a lot of people love 'em, but the double charges/no powder loads i've heard about seem to be with 550's. I got a used sdb on the cheap, does all i need and i load low volume stuff on a turret press. should i ever need an upgrade it will be a 650/casefeeder. my one piece of advice is to collect a bunch of powders and bullets and start trying small batches of stuff. i don't shoot a .45 in competition but i use a 200 swc/red dot for plinking. theres nothing worse than having lots of components that won't work. i have 400 lead plinking bullets to load right now that are undersize for my revo and won't shoot straight! you'll find that magic combo though, then buy a bunch of supplies and start cranking 'em out! +1 on winchester primers for autos, fed. for revos.
  8. +1. if she were mine i'd slap on some wood grips and maybe a f/o front sight and try to wear her out!
  9. Hey guys - i''m a newbie to this stuff and never shot a speedloader gun in competition, but wouldn't it be about the same price to get the cylinder cut as to buy all those speedloaders? Also, are there round nose jacketed bullets for the .44 or just lead? I was thinking i'd go with the major caliber if it were me. heavy gun good! I have homemade moonclip holders myself, i've seen others too. good luck!
  10. A bunch of guys I shoot nra hunter pistol silhouettes with use rugers. I have an sp101 all tricked out that I carry, but shoot a 627 mostly. here's my impression: 1. longer, lumpier da pull. never as good as a smith. might be a dealbreaker. 2. quality control better than taurus, worse than smith 3. really easy to work on. trigger group falls out the bottom, no screws, special tools, tricks 4. better cyl. release - just mash it. 5. built ford tough. stands case sticking hot loads for decades, according to the silhouette guys.
  11. i've got a box of x-ring rubber bullets from midway. they said to drill the primer holes oversize, and they mean it. the gun will lock right up! mark the cases, too, so you don't load them with real bullets. I drilled some too big and the inside of the primer was getting shot out. primers are real dirty, and the bullets shoot very low and not too accurate, but they're fun for practicing, especially draws. i've taught gun handling to a couple new people with them - low noise, low kick, low danger, real gun. you can make a trap out of a cardboard box, some old towels, and rods to hang them with. make sure to practice over a good backstop, in case you screw up.
  12. i'll take the whole problem off your hands for twenty bucks! i'm a machinist and i can't think of how to get a new hole drilled without taking the barrel off. I think TIGing it over would be fine, and a hard bushing would be better.
  13. I got a 627 a few mos. ago, it came with crappy fingergroove roundbutt grips, also came with ugly sticky hogue rubber grips. A friend loaned me some jm's, and i don't like that they don't have the palm swell and don't point that well for me but they are really great for moving the gun in your hand for reloads, and you can adjust your grip if your draw wasn't so hot - mine sometimes isn't. this set is real pretty wood, too. I have thin hands and long fingers. I know jerry has great big hands. I'm saving pennies for some hogue big butts to try out. the two boxes are getting filled!
  14. i'm shooting an 8-shot - in production. just trying to embarass a bottom feeder or two! it's legal for l10 also, can't see why a revo shooter couldn't be bumped to that class in case of an extra shot. i don't want to see any custom rebarrels in revo - is that the real intent of this rule?
  15. I started a few years ago with a lee auto turret, and i don't regret it at all. It's really easy to set up, powder drop works great, and I spent a little over $100 for it with dies. It's now used for low volume stuff, bolted to the opposite end of the bench from the blue press!
  16. you got it, more or less. the slower powders listed will give higher velocity at the same pressure which means more recoil, and it takes more of the slower powder to make the same pressure and the weight of the powder itself adds to recoil. they have more muzzle blast too because the pressure is higher when the bullet leaves. all else equal the gap will have more pressure than acp with the same amount of powder because it's in a more confined space, which means higher velocity. 357454's results would confirm that.
  17. i get the odd crooked bullet in .45 also... resizing loaded ammo may be a sticky situation! haven't used a lee factroy crimp in this caliber, but have had luck with them.
  18. i'm no expert, but i do load some .45 and it uses small amounts of fast burning powder, and i never get much unburnt stuff. i think most .45 would be losing pressure in a really long barrel and not get more velocity because the powder is used up. in a revo, they don't count the cylinder as barrel length so the barrel is really longer than in an auto, but there is that pesky leak partway down so you end up with the same performance roughly - a 5" revo should get the same performance as a 5" auto. gap has less room for powder, with heavier bullets it's exaggerated. should make major easy though. hope this helps!
  19. you don't notice all the dings on a car until you wash it!
  20. good point about the quantities needed! i load .30 herrett, which is .30-30 with a lower shoulder and trimmed a bunch, and it's a pain to do more than a couple. i think i'll start with a few trimmed .38s. and then pony up for the new brass. i have lots of red dot, but in .357 the primers get ugly quick so it sounds a little fast for this. i have some power pistol too, but indoors it flashed bright white! no good. i think i'll try the 231 1st. thanks!
  21. is it ok to cut down .38 spl or .357 brass to short colt length or are the walls too thick?
  22. in revo division, i think it will be slower to load. plus like two guys show up for the local matches. i really just want to try to beat a glock or two with the outdated wheelgun! the 002 is kydex and covers the trigger and half the cylinder, per the rules (i just took another look at them) but it's open in the front. i think i'll just wait to get called on it.
  23. very good - that's what i wanted to hear! and thanks for the pic! i have some homemade moonclip holders that should work out a little better than the rest, but for now weak hand reloads are really awkward for me. i also just have the 3 factory clips that came with it and jhp reloading dummies, and they won't get in the gun AT ALL! i know i have to use the muzzle cap but a safariland 002 is legal, right? and i assume i can't bob the hammer or put on a big cylinder release due to the external mods rule.
  24. i just took delivery of a brand new 627-vcomp! it will be my 1st ipsc gun, i'm going to try to shoot it in production. it will also be used for pins, hunter's pistol silhouette, and blowing up milk jugs filled with water at long range. i'm going to wear this sucker out! it has a dovetailed front sight, .25" high and looks to be .375"x60 slot. which fiber optic front sight will fit the best? also, i have a dillon SDB with .357 dies, and i'd like to use .38 short colts in this gun. i also have a box of rainier 158 rn plated bullets, that need a taper crimp. do i just get a 9mm conversion for the press? thanks!
