  1. Lee makes the dies for EGW (that is direct from the EGW website). I bought a Lee undersize die for 40 and it cleared up some going into battery issues I was having on my 1911. I see more Lee undersized dies in my future. YMMV
  2. Competition firearms: 1911 or 2011 in 40 S&W Carry: Star Firestar (most carried) and Glock 27.....yes 40 S&W
  3. That short amount of time isn't something too worrisome. I stopped shooting/reloading in 1987 and started again a few years ago. I pulled the old Dillon 450 and and everything else out of the box under my workbench and the 3/4 LB of Unique, 1/2 LB of 2400 and primers went bang every time.
  4. Loudgp, you and I use the same method for storage. Dirty brass comes home and gets sorted, put in the bins like whats in the post above marked "DIRTY" and caliber. As they get deprimed and tumbled they go into a clean bin marked by caliber.
  5. I was always told to put a cap full of mineral spirits in the walnut media and it would keep the dust down. I tumble with both corncob and walnut and don't have any dust issues. Guys I shoot with went wet/pin and their brass does come out looking pretty nice. After reading this entire thread I may need to try it since I get a lot of outdoor sourced brass and I hate putting it in the ultrasonic.

    Max OAL for .40

That's an excellent point. Which reminds me, make sure you fill your mag with the new length / bullet shape. On the 1911 I could shoot a longer OAL than the 1.157 but in my son's Glock they would hang up on the mag catch bumps in the mag. It would strip the first round but the following rounds just stayed down in the mag.
  7. Is there any chance your wife would write a self help book for those of us that have wives who are not so open minded? Asking for a friend....

    Unusual malfunction.

Thanks for the update. I was curious since my son talked about playing in Limited with his Glock. If he does then I have a lot of info to help the transition.

    Unusual malfunction.

Curious to know if you got it sorted and what you found.
  10. Glad I found this thread. Between Hyve and ETS i think I see some stocking stuffers for my son. thanks for sharing guys

    Max OAL for .40

I loaded out to 1.157 and we ran them in my 1911 and my son’s Glock. My son had a few feeding issues on his G35 gen 4 so I scrubbed the chamber and shortened up to 1.150 and it has been solid so far.
  12. Wow this is a timely question since I am building a 2011 for fun. First I agree with Joe4d 100%. Unless you want to domit all either get one off the shelf or have your builder buy their preferred components. I got a CK frame and slide and Still trying to decide on barrel. The frame and grip design on the 2011 threw me a bit (yeah I know time change and get with it) but thats where I’m at....oh no barrel bushing. For a 1911 I would buy Capian frame and slide and a Bar-Sto barrel as I built a few of those way back when and they were fantastic then and doubt they got worse as technology got better....and that gives you your bushing.
  13. Very intersting thread, but the question about minor wasn’t answered or maybe I missed it. A long time ago when I found IPSC the choices were much smaller for firearm and caliber. I was a teenager and didn't want to deal with 45ACP recoil so my competition gun was a Colt series 70 in 38 Super with a Bar-Sto barrel hopped up a bit to make major. Unless I’m trying to make major, especially with what we have available today, I’m rocking the 9mm poodle shooter. Caveat is I don’t own a 9mm smallest semi other than the 22 in the safe is 40 S&W. However given the original question....9mm all day. Ammo is cheap, brass is plentiful, you can make major if you want, you don’t need an aftermarke barrel to fix the headspacing nightmare of the factory barrels of yesteryear, and I have yet to find anyone at the range with a 9mm 1911 that has feeding issues so that arguement doesn’t hold water for me. Now I need to look at getting a 9 just to have, even though my 12yr old says I can’t.....thanks for the thought provoking question though.

    G34 Accuracy Issues

Look up “diagnostic target” in the google machine and print them out formyour range trip. I use these a LOT with students, friends, my son and even myself from time to time as we all get into some bad habits and need a tune up. Sounds like you need a little more finger on the trigger but see what the target says.
  15. Yeah I’m going to keep it....and pskys2 we are but we had the fun of doing this when it was new. I’m just happy my son is into it. I loved competing when I was a teenager but it would have been more fun if my dad was out there with instead of on the sidelines. Now I just need April to get here.
  16. Have to agree, bought an ultrasonic and wound up tumbling. The ultrasonic is now in the garage for cleaning automotive parts.
  17. Just my $.02, I have a Lee, I’ve had it for years. The only time there was an issue it was with 5.56 brass. I bent the pin. I have since bought the Squirrel Daddy pins and no issues. That being said, I learned a long time ago that keeping your mind open to newer things will make life easier. I will have to take a look at the Mighty Armory die. My old single stage press was fine but it didn’t keep me from buying my Dillon 450 back in the 80s, or upgrading to a 550 from the 450.
  18. I tired my son’s Comp-Tac and bought one for my 1911. If i come across a cheap Bladetech I will certainly give that a try. Now I need to talk myself i to selling my old Chapman rig.....or maybe just keep it for nostalgia sake..

    Hoster for gen4 g34

I bought my son a Comp-Tac International for his Glock 35 (its his first holster) and after I tried it I bought one for my 1911. The hanger that comes with itmputs it ina good place for me and its a lot slicker on release and draw than my old Chapman rig that I loved so much. I guess coming out of the stone age isnt a bad thing.
  20. I have been shooting the ARCHED since 1982 for exactly the reasons noted by Joe4d. Its just a good tweak to get your sights on target sooner. The flat housing was the sweetheart oh so many years ago and I see that has been the status quo but ask yourself why do YOU have one. Did it come on the gun? Does your favorie shooter have one on their gun? Then perhaps you didnt know you could tweak your sights by using a different MS housing. The more I read these forims the more I find that a LOT of what we used to do in the infancy of this sport is lost on the masses but none the less it is what will help YOU shave tme and produce more Alphas.
  21. Soooo.... I was playing with my son’s holster and hangers. The holster “feels” faster than my Chapman high ride and the hangers are awsome. I may need a range trip in the very near (and very cold) future to test this. I might see an old dog learing new tricks.
  22. The BOSS hanger is actually on its way, but he wont get it until he gets to shoot this setup a bit. Once I get some first shot time data then we will put it on and try it. I am listening to all the info given as the game is a lot different now then it was in my youth.
  23. Really glad I read all of this thread thus far. After deciding to get back in after a VERY long hiatus I shot a few matches this year with my old Chapman high ride (Stop laughing, I said it was a long time) and it was like an old pair of shoes...just felt right. Then I bought my son a Glock 35 and a Comp-Tac International and did some dry fire with it. Hate the Glock but that holster is fast. Then I found this thread and now have a new holster on my Christmas list. Thanks guys. I can say that embracing whats out there today will help the time.
  24. He is liking the International especially after I put the hanger on it. But its just been dry fire sessions. I will have to get him out to the range for some live fire practice.
  25. So I hope this helps; I shot IPSC in the 80s with a 1911 so I got really used to the trigger. Lets fast forard a minute or two to today and I am getting back into combat (USPSA) with my son who is 12. I tried the XDM, Glock, M&P both original and 2.0 and other than a $300 trigger in a S&W 2.0 NOTHING felt good so I am shooting single stack however my son now has a Glock 35. I will offer up that a.striker trigger takes either practice or ignorance to like. I can shoot hos Glock but the 1911 is like an old pair of slippers to me, however he loves his Glock over a 1911. So to answer your question....no you are not alone. To further this comversation.....rolling break or not its not a 1911 it really come down to what your trigger finger is used to.
