  1. The International will be here monday so he can practice BUT keep the options coming....as we all know there are some things that just work better for individual shooters.
  2. First let me say that I had a 450 that I bought back in the 80s during my first foray into combat shooting, and it is now upgraded to a 550. I load for both my son and I on this press and its not a huge a production monster but it gets the job the done AND the 550 his way faster than the 450. So if you decide to go for a bigger press think about keeping the 550 just for other calibers.
  3. Since I am going to build a 2011 this thread gave me some info I was looking for pertaining to the ramp cut on the frames. I have the feeling there are going to be quite a few grip modules being purchased as well. These forums are a great resource.
  4. Thanks...He is really excited to shoot combat with dad in the Spring. We shoot Steel Challenge now and he tried a combat match (ok he was allowed to shoot the stages with his 22 after the match) so its good bonding time. I ordered his International and BOSS hanger. The belt will wait until Spring since he is a growing boy. I have the list of other holsters to try in the event he doesn't like the International.
  5. Yeah I remember doing all the fitting by hand with files and stones. Notice the word “fondly” was not in the preceeding sentence. Also, machine tools makes it easy to keep things square and parallel. I once had to have a little material TIG welded to a hood that I filed a little too much off of which would have been way easier to get right in a mill with CNC and a digital readout.
  6. I would measure the length of the trigger from the back of the shoe to the surface that bears on the sear/disconnector and compare that dimension to your stock trigger. The fact that this issue is not persent with the stock trigger makes me think your new trigger may be a hair short on that dimension, especially since backing out the overtravel screw doesnt help.
  7. Before I answer I have a question; do you mean it drops to half cock when you A) press the trigger or when you re-cock the hammer Condition A suggests what Cherokeewind and drewbeck suggest however condition B opens a Pandoras box that starts with the take up being too tight.
  8. I used them way back when and a lot of us cut our own from various materials. After a long hiatus from shooting I will tell you I have none in my new gun and it runs like a sewing machine. As for them causing issues with reliability, “back in the day” we cleaned our guns after every trip to the range so we would see them deteriorating and replace before causing issues. Today we have guns much more tolerant of not being cleaned which is awesome except for this particular case. After seeing this thread I might try one just for S&Gs as I forgot about them.
  9. I have built 1911s way back when we peened the frame rails with a hammer and squeezed the slide in a vise......now that I’m back and technology has progressed....I agree the cost of the class is well worth it. A small CNC mill is on my Christmas list (OK a small mill as I have a Gecko drive and steppers on the shelf).
  10. I got him to sit down with me and look at the holsters. He likes the Comp-Tac (and that was without me saying anything except pick one of these three). so at the very least we have a starting point. Thanks to everyone for the input. I liked giving him choices and letting him make the decision. I am hoping this sport sticks with him. I did it in the 80s then got away from it for LONG time but got back a year ago when he started shooting with me. It has changed a lot but its still lot of fun and I don't see us not going to shoot combat and steels for quite some time.
  11. I’m glad you posted this and the replies had pictures. I learned something new today.
  12. I appreciate the input guys. When I did this stuff back in the 80s things were a lot different with way fewer choices. Since the boy is new to it all I want him to get a good start. I have been doing a bit of surfing over my morning coffee and there is a lot to digest, BUT if I really look at it for what it is the choice is pretty clear,....get one of the aforementioned holsters put it on a belt and get him practicing. When he gets his butt out of bed I will have him choose a holster. Thanks for the input guys.
  13. One of the guys I shoot with said blade tech but he didnt say anything about the boss hanger. Guess I will be taking a look at that one as well as the red hill.
  14. So my 12 yr old son is gong to shoot a little combat with me. I bought him a Glock 35 (I offered to get him a 1911 like mine but he wanted the Glock) so I find myself looking for a good holster for him. I came across the Comp-Tac International which looks great but the more I dig the deeper the rabbit hole goes. Just realize I shoot a 1911 and draw from the Chapman Highrise I ised in the 80s when I was a kid shooting IPSC. I know the game has changed which is why I want input on what he needs.
  15. Interesting thread. I had a 450 that I bought back in the 80s that I upgraded to a 550 piece by piece and can tell you I had that issue with Wolf brand primers for some odd reason with both priming systems. CCI and Winchester have not exhibited that issue. I haven't had any of those primers in a while so I can't compare them to the CCI or Winchesters.
