  1. You won't, but you WILL meet a $8.95 ham steak that's worth twice as much! Hoping I can swing this but I probably won't know until next year...
  2. Right. That's why the comp is really just cosmetic - the round isn't going fast enough (or bringing enough gas) to do much with it. The porting is more effective at reducing recoil but it's never going to be as good as a properly popple'd and comp'd .38 Super or 9 Major. As it sits, the dot goes to the top of the window under recoil but doesn't leave it. Yep. No one makes a 170 that I've found, so I'm using 140's with Gram's 11mm basepads and Gram's guts. I get 17 reloadable (barely), 16 easily reloadable, but they run consistently so it could be worse. I've tried MBX (they claim 18/17 reloadable) but they didn't want to feed in this gun. Fair point. At least I'm not deafening people, lol .
  3. I can easily do it with a revolver. ...my score will be zero since I'll just fire one shot, show clear, and reholster, but yeah, I'll beat his stage time.
  4. I guess I built mine? I assembled it, at least - some things were beyond my skill level so I had to pay someone else to do it. This started life as a really beat-looking STI frame. I built up the bottom end and fit the .45 ACP top end to it (had gunsmith help with the slide/barrel fitting) and shot it as a Limited gun for a while. I converted it to Open when I decided that I wanted to learn to shoot dots. I had Magnaport add the V8 porting and Brazen TiN'd the barrel, then had the slide milled for a Viper. The Viper didn't survive very long so I installed the sideways C-More on a frame mount, bought a cover plate and racker, and had Protocall (Toolguy) mill the plate and attach the racker to it. I can always switch back to a slide-mounted dot by removing two screws The comp does literally nothing (it's a bushing comp) – the gun just looked too stubby without it, lol. The ports do all the work of mitigating the, erm, mighty .45 ACP recoil. Speaking of, is it dumb to have a .45 Open gun? I'd say "probably", though now that small primers are unobtainium I'm less disappointed in myself.
  5. Lots of good advice in this thread in terms of other options but I own the Axil Ghost Stryke Extremes so I can give you some feedback on those. Overall, I like them for outdoor work. They come with the standard assortment of in-ear tip options so there should be something that fits you. The sound reproduction is pretty natural, aside from a bit of hiss/feedback when the wind starts blowing hard as there's nothing covering the mic. One weird thing is that other people's voices come through fine, but when I speak my voice sounds like a robot. It might be the positioning of the mic, I'm not sure. It's no more off-putting than how muffled my voice sounds when using non-electronic ears. They're not enough protection to be using indoors - I tried it for a short match once and left with a headache. They'd be fine under a set of muffs. They have Bluetooth connectivity which is neat I guess? I never use it. They're in no way worth the $200 that Axil advertises them for on the site. They do slap discount codes all over their site/Instagram that bring the price down to around $120 which is way more reasonable. I'd probably buy them again. YOU'RE NOT THE BOSS OF ME!!1!
  6. Decided to turn my .45 ACP sorta-open gun into something closer to a real one. Took off the Viper (which smashed itself in about three range trips), added a 90-degree C-More, added a racker, added a NitroFin and ICE, had the barrel TiN'd, and added a fake comp. The racker is attached to an aluminum Viper cover plate. It'll let me easily switch back to the Vortex if I ever really want to. The comp is a Wilson bushing comp. It might be helping a little, but .45 ACP is going too slow to really make use of it. I mostly added it because the gun looked too stubby without it, lol.
  7. I picked a used Grand Power X-Calibur this week. It looks like a ton of fun, but the large backstrap that's on there is a bit too big for my hand and the gun didn't come with any of the smaller versions. Has anyone seen them for sale? Do the backstraps from other Mk12 guns fit? I emailed Global Ordnance but didn't hear back.
  8. Must have been a different one. Our shooter did have a squib. He didn't protest the ruling but it did plant the idea that got this whole thread spitballin'. Welcome to most of the rulebook, lol. Have fun at the class!
  9. I think that's a goofy stage design (and I shoot IDPA, lol) but the real focus of this thread should be that your gun shouldn't be able to bounce out of your holster like that. It's not an overly-aggressive movement. Sorry that it happened to you but hopefully the outcome of this is that you're replacing that holster for something with better retention. Have you considered the SERPA? (...yes, I'm joking)
  10. Come on out! It's a lovely place when it's not... on fire. Or experiencing a pandemic.
  11. If that's *literally* the worst idea you've ever heard, you really need to hang around me more. Not even top ten!
  12. You literally said "any malfunction". I'd contend dislodged eyes and ears are a shooter malfunction.
  13. *ahem* My bad. I'm not usually this slow but I swear, October 2020 has been a month of Mondays for me. For some reason, my brain was conflating the rules when applying them to the competitor. Obviously, if the shooter can call a stop and get a reshoot when there's NO squib, it's basically a free pass to reset any stage they don't like. Yeesh. Mea culpa across the board. The rules make sense as they are.
  14. Typed that wrong (on my phone). Go back two posts and I wrote it correctly.
  15. Squib = Scored as shot No Squib = Reshoot But only if the RO calls "Stop". If they don't, and the competitor stops because of a suspected squib, it's scored as shot regardless. What do I have wrong? (Edited because I had a brain fart typing it)
  16. The same reshoot/no reshoot rule would apply if the shooter called the squib and a stop (rather than the RO). Squib = Scored as shot No Squib = Reshoot
  17. No confusion about the current rules. I'm discussing a hypothetical change.
  18. But that wouldn't be the case. If there was no squib, there'd be no re-shoot and the stage would be scored as shot (assuming the same rules apply to the shooter as they do an RO). This isn't a hill I'm willing to die on, but I don't see why the rules couldn't allow the shooter to call a squib and have the same rules apply as they do to the RO.
  19. I'm glad there's a precedent. On the other hand - I'm not sure what there is to game here. Let's assume the same rules apply to the competitor as the RO - If you call a squib on yourself, knowing there isn't one, the stage would be scored as shot. If the stage is incomplete, that's literally always going to be worse than finishing the stage (even if your run wasn't good). Or am I missing something?
  20. Hey all, This came up at a biggish match over the weekend. We had a competitor squib during a course of fire and stop himself. The rules are really clear about what happens here when the RO is the one who stops the competitor - if the squib is legitimate, the course is scored as shot (5.7.7.1). If the RO was mistaken, the competitor gets a reshoot (5.7.7.2). However, there doesn't seem to be a provision for the competitor calling the squib themselves as 5.7.7 is prefaced with "In the event that a Range Officer terminates a course of fire due to... (squib etc)". If the shooter calls the stop and not the RO, is it an immediate "scored as shot" with no chance of a reshoot? That's the only interpretation I can glean from the rules, but it seems odd to put the onus on them to decide if the possibility of bulging their barrel outweighs likely zeroing a COF.

    Para Magwells

Not installed. Hopefully this gives you some idea of how the magwell wraps around the sides and back but leaves the front open.

    Para Magwells

EGW has their version in stock; I bought one a few weeks ago (before I decided to part with my Para). The only downside is it doesn't wrap around the front of the grip.
  23. Yay, Mike! Your legendary bullets are going to arrive! I ordered a case of 147's on Sept. 9th, so I'm barely into my waiting period... I ordered from King's on Sept. 15th and they shipped on Sept. 30th, though the 68lb box has somehow disappeared into the wilds of the USPS logistic network since then...
  24. Bristlecone was running USPSA practice matches (I'm not sure if they still are). You get to shoot two courses at least three times each; it's good for trying variations on stage plans, speed, etc. Edit: And Arvada Rifle and Pistol Club lets you draw and fire once you're qualified. I don't think any of the indoor ranges allow run and gun practice, but maybe some of the outdoor ones do?
