    Cover?

So, what IS in the rule book? Nothing that's contrary to the above.

    Cover?

Some clubs/SOs regard cover as a place, while others regard cover a "state of being". The former want you near something that represents something that will stop bullets, while the latter only require that the shooter cannot see any unneutralized threats. I think that's much more of an issue than is "how many toes are hanging out". I will admit that I have seen videos appearing to show shooters standing squarely in a doorway while engaging targets, with no cover call, and can't understand how that flies anywhere. The videos above appear to show, in the first case, a shooter who may have their foot exposed at ~33 second mark, but the SO appears to not be in position to make the call. The second video shows the SO signal a penalty while the shooter isn't shooting, so have no idea what that penalty was for, unless he thought the shooter was going to engage while moving, rather than from cover. Again, the SO, who probably expected the shooter to approach the barrel before shooting, was in no position to determine if the shooter was using cover, or not. At our state match, shot last weekend, one of the stages had two walls, one about ten feet downrange of the other, with the far left end of the uprange wall almost aligned laterally with the far right end of the downrange wall. A shooter could stand close to the uprange wall to engage the first two targets, then essentially pie the other wall by merely stepping forward. It was decided to invoke "arm's length", as cover was interpreted as a place - the wall - and so standing ten feet from the wall was not using it for cover. Is that a novel interpretation?
  3. At our sanctioned match we interpret the rule to mean that as long as the scale reads less than 43.3 ounces (readout goes only one digit past the decimal), the gun is legal, but I have also seen/heard that the intent of the rule was not to allow .2 ounce of wiggle room for the gun, but, as sauconvalley said, for the scale. I'm not sure how that is supposed to work, so we've gone with allowing the gun to read as much as .2 over weight. Prior to the addendum, we used to tape over the readout to the right of the decimal, and as long as the whole number was 43 rather than 44, we considered the gun legal.
  4. Really? If they hold ten you must load ten, "flies in the face of reason"? Allowing everyone to choose whatever number of rounds they'd prefer to put in their mags certainly flies in the face of reason.
  5. I'm in the "I dont shoot Production and am against it" group, because I don't see it doing anything constructive; are there really so many shooters in Production with sub-3# triggers? Is the issue competitive equity within the division, or mechanical safety, or what? Some are concerned about all the shooters who will have to have their 2# triggers bumped up to 3# to be legal, but are there really very many people in that boat? I think the rule adds a lot of complexity to major match production without really changing anything on the competitive front, and that's reason enough to be against it. I would have supported a 5# or 6# first pull, as a sort of backdoor means of making Production more of a "stock gun" division (reducing or eliminating the "need" for trigger work). There's no need for striker-fired race guns to have their own division when they can already compete in Limited or L10.
  6. Obviously, establishing a 3# minimum pull weight does nothing to help ensure that Production-legal guns are in anything like production condition, so what's the point? I'd like to see minimum pull weight as a means to encourage use of DAO and DA/SA pistols in Production, otherwise Production is little different from Single Stack/Minor. Let's combine SS, Production and L10 into a single division, 8+1/Major and 10+1/Minor, and create a new Production more like IPSC Production, where the guns are expected to be as produced.
  7. Yep, that's the way I'd see it as well. When we do Mozambique engagements we put a strip of black tape at the neck perf and score it as two targets. A) Down 10, FTN bee) Down 11, two FTN C) Down 11, two FTN D) Down 5, FTN It allows us to specify the number of rounds on each target, without any "head is part of the body" nonsense, and since the whole point of the Mozambique drill is as a simulation of two body shots not neutralizing the threat, applying a FTN for missing the head, regardless of the body hits, is appropriate and "realistic".
  8. I can't remember the last time I saw a required head shot at any distance other than ten yards.
  9. Since IDPA is a sport in which we use full-power ammo, how about bumping CDP to 195,000 power factor, and restoring 10mm (and whatever else will make the pf). Striker-fired guns to ESP/CDP. Define cover as a physical place (wall, car, barricade, etc.), and any open ground between these objects as not cover. That would introduce some sort of proximity requirement, which might cause more problems than it solves. Do not adopt the addendum rule that allows shooting while moving only at the start of a stage. Allow any gun that is division-legal to replace a broken gun in that division. Create a penalty for misses, rather than just dropped points, so it hurts at least as much as FTN.
  10. I immediately contacted my AC, asking how to get on one of these Tiger Teams. Reading the email, I figured 50-100 people might be involved, but the AC said he knew nothing about the Team(s) or how they/it were/was selected, and that no other ACs would admit to being involved, either.
  11. If your Gold Cup has Bo-mars, it's not stock. Colt used the Elliason adjustable rear, which has a reputation for being somewhat fragile. The roll pin at the front will frequently break, as will the spring detents in the adjustment mechanism. Some have had good results from replacing the roll pin with a length of drill rod, and compressing a piece of shok-buff between the sight and slide, so the sight isn't bouncing off the stops with every shot, can help extend the service life. Wilson Combat makes a sight specifically for the Gold Cup, but it is quite expensive and requires some machining for proper installation. I suspect your lock-back issues are related to the mags, rather than springs. Pull the slide, insert an empty mag and see if the follower is slipping past the slide stop. For major power loads, I use a 14# recoil spring, and have been using ISMI, though Wolff is good, too.
  12. I tripped on a curb exiting a pub on my way to the beer garden. I was spun around by the loss of balance, but had the presence of mind to keep the beer upright, and though I scraped-up my left elbow and left knee, and twisted my right ankle, the beer was still half full, and nobody got "swept" by the spray. I'd say no harm, no foul.
  13. I shoot my carry - Detonics Combat Master - three or four times a year, including the occasional sanctioned match. Last Summer, shooting CDP with my usual 5", 8+1 gun, I finished second Expert, by five seconds, at a sanctioned match. Two or three weeks later, I shot against the same guy with my carry, loaded 7+1. He beat me by about a minute! At the local level, I also try to put some mileage on a lightweight Commander, and my performance isn't dramatically different from what I see with the fullsize gun. I think being short one round on the initial load with the Combat Master makes more difference than the ultra-short sight radius and grip frame. I've never even attempted the classifier with either of the short guns, but I'd expect my score to suffer by ten-fifteen seconds, as the long-range emphasis of the CoF would hurt inordinately.
  14. The match is full. Thanks to all who entered, and see you Saturday!
  15. We've added Back-Up Gun and rifle side stages. Guns and ammo provided, with the guns to be raffled after the match.
  16. Better still is the guy who doesn't want to point the gun uprange when holstering in an FBI-rake holster, so he rotates his body a bit so he points the gun right at the SO as he holsters, instead.

    ESP gun

I've had my best performances shooting a single stack .38 Super, since almost all of my shooting is either CDP or USPSA Single Stack. I also like loading 9+1, as most matches require two-each on paper targets, resulting in slidelock reloads between targets, rather than in the "middle" of a target. I've been shooting a Hi-Power this Summer, and find the double-stack mags, in that platform, are harder to reload than a single stack. Getting the mag even slightly "off", in terms of rotating it from perfectly aligned with the well, stops things before they've really gotten started.
  18. Case one does not sound like "dislodged from pouch", if mag was intentionally drawn but subsequently dropped. PE for not picking it up, though. Case two is a variation on case one; mag dropped but not properly stowed; PE.
  19. I've been working on a Springfield hi-cap Limited gun for six years. I'm a single stacker all the way, don't have much time on Paras or S_Is, and find the Springfield grip workable. In some ways, I like it better than a single stack, as I have long fingers and the larger grip circumference has more room to get more of both hands in contact with the frame. Since the Springer is offered now only in .45 ACP "G.I." form, they take quite a bit of work to get into something resembling Limited-ready form. I decided to stick with .45, as 18+1 seems like a bottomless mag to someone who's used to 8+1, but some will insist on .40, and that's going to be a custom build by someone. I have a bushing barrel and FLGR in my gun now, and the weight and balance seem OK to me. The early Springfield hi-caps had forged frames, and I thought that was a real plus, but the newer ones are cast, and while that's not necessarily bad, it's something of which to be aware. The area under the trigger guard is shaped really weird, with a sort of hump where there could/should be some material removed, and I had that part of the frame recontoured while the beavertail and magwell were being done; it feels good, now.
  20. Change all the guts to standard Colt/G.I. parts when you swap the spring out of the ILS housing. I've seen at least one source for the correct cap, pin, etc. sold as a kit.
  21. http://www.sgmgrips.com/springfield_hi_capicity_grips They do look more than a little thicker than the stock grips.
  22. I don't see any pressing issues with the divisions! But, if someone told me I could remake the divisions in the manner I'd like, I wouldn't touch ESR or SSR; the distinction between those two divisions is clearer than any of the others.
  23. Just make sure that "first" mag is first only on loaded-gun starts. I saw two people use 11-rounders on an unloaded table start at a sanctioned match.
