  1. Absolutely! Phil's plan will definitely mix it up, and give a bunch of other skilled revolver shooters the opportunity to shoot the match--including several who are plenty capable of winning it. Jerry has had heavy pressure the past few years from Cliff, Matt, Rich, and a few others. Next year that pressure will increase even more when you add guys like Rob, Nils, and Shannon to the mix (just to name a few that come to mind). I would not dream of missing the experience!
  2. I can guarantee you that none of the serious contenders in Revolver Division will agree with you on that. Memphis is tons of fun, but the experience of shooting the Memphis match is nothing like shooting a USPSA Nationals.
  3. That's Full Figured, sir. This is my idea of full-figured:
  4. The important thing to remember is to place the buffer in the correct location. (The trash can.)
  5. Sounds like you have been getting frustrated for a long time. I hope there aren't too many senior shooters out there who feel this way.
  6. No, I mean over-size in terms of length. In my experience, the stock internal trigger stop is too short for optimal function as a trigger stop in DA mode. Again, I'm not a big believer in trigger stops for DA revolvers, but when I used them in the past I used a slightly longer piece of drill rod and then ground it to the right length, using trial and error method, taking only a little off at a time. During that trial and error process, you will want to be careful not to bend the dog pin behind the rebound slide by cycling the action with the side-plate off.
  7. These stories nearly always have the phrase "Dillon 550" in the first sentence. I am not a believer in using progressive machines that do not auto-index.
  8. What a great post--I read every word with interest--thanks for taking the time to write it. And very sorry for your family's loss.
  9. I agree, and its another reason that USPSA should be more actively promoting the sport to women. We have some remarkably talented women in USPSA, but there are far too few of them. OMG, really Brit? Really? How could anybody seriously suggest that USPSA doesn't fall over itself to promote and publicize and reward the women shooters, at levels that are far out of proportion to their actual participation levels?? I'm not saying it's a bad idea. But at the very least, let's acknowledge all the active effort that is already being expended in that direction.
  10. This is a religious debate--the people who have their minds made up on this issue are not going to budge. I don't believe grease should be used on handguns. Especially not for handguns that will be used in cold weather. I have found that synthetic motor oil stays in place and continues to lubricate better and longer than any product marketed as gun oil that I have ever tried. That's my experience. But then again I'm probably just as much a religious zealot on this issue as anybody else!
  11. Here's what you need to make your 25-2 competitive with any revo out there: competition action job chamber mouth chamfer narrow/smoothed trigger face 100-pack of Ranch Products moonclips (~$35) The next step might be upgraded sights, although there is nothing wrong with the factory set-up if you like black-on-black. Grips and cylinder release are matters of personal preference. You will probably find that jacketed bullets shoot better in your gun than cast lead. Nothing goes in faster than jacketed ball anyway.
  12. Yeah, the research purely involved a 1911 extractor, which is the context where you normally hear that admonition. It might not necessarily apply to other types of pistols, but I would think the spring-loaded extractors on most other production pistols would be unaffected by snapping over a cartridge rim. It's not a practice I engage in, or like to see--but once again, I suspect there is much more folklore in play here than reality--which is common with many things surrounding firearms. Self-annointed gun experts (and we all know several of those, right?) tend to pass along much misinformation, and in many ways the internet has only made it worse.
  13. Ayoob is an old buddy of mine from the days when I lived and competed in New Hampshire. His Stressfire revolver reload method is meant for real-world encounters, but it adds an extra step that is not desirable for competitive shooting. It is especially not good for guns that use moonclips, which pop out easily with little chance of hang-ups. There are a number of top revolver shooters who keep the gun in the strong hand and reload with the weak hand. When he was campaigning the wheel, Dan Carden had one of the fastest reloads in the game, and he always tossed the moonclip in with his weak hand. I can reload either way, but find the weak hand reload preferable for two reasons: (1) when the gun stays in the strong hand, you tend to keep much better control of the muzzle direction, and (2) it translates better to your auto-pistol reloading technique.
  14. FYI, Matt Griffin does not wear a beanie during his 6-hour dry-fire sessions. He wears one of these:
  15. Uh-oh, you guys are passing on tired old 1911 folklore here! I had always heard that it's hard on extractors to drop a round in the chamber and close the slide like that. Hell, it seemed to make sense, and I'm sure I heard the admonition many years ago from some old fart at the range or the gunshop--or maybe I read it in a gun magazine--and it imprinted on my brain. But then I became aware of scientific testing that was done by gunsmith Ned Christiansen which proves it's not true. Google it.
  16. I understand your feeling on this, but it's really not within your prerogative to make your own personal judgment calls based on the shooter's "attitude" toward you. If you saw the shooter sweep himself, and you're 100% certain of the call, you owe it to all the rest of us to make sure the appropriate sanction is levied.....and in this instance, the sanction happens to be a DQ.
  17. OK, I want to be able to switch mags quickly. I know about the Tac-Sol extended mag releases. Are there other options available out there? Does anyone else sell the Tac-Sol unit (since they are currently out of stock on that item)? I would also like some extended basepads for my mags. Who makes/sells them?
  18. Sumbitch has been sandbagging me, my Carmoney revolvers are 6 pounds! J/K Matt Hee-hee-hee!!!
  19. Actually, there is a decent chance it will work, if you can obtain a frame. You will probably need to do some tweaking with the internals, though, even if the slide goes on. Another low-cost option might be an Essex frame. Their quality has greatly improved in recent years.
  20. Hmmmmmm.....you may be on to something here......
  21. Yeah, I'm one of those people who is so busy I would never even notice if something I ordered was delayed by a couple days--and I order quite a bit of stuff! Heck, it's pretty common for me to see a package sitting at my doorstep and not even remember what I ordered until I open it up. Part of the problem may be that so many of the vendors who are part of this forum are so incredibly prompt in shipping out orders (Shooters Connection, Brownells, Speed Shooter Specialties, and Protocall Design are just a few that immediately come to mind, based on my own personal experience with those fine companies) that it's easy to get spoiled! Anybody in business knows that no matter how hard you try, you're just not going to be able to make everybody happy. As a rule, the vendors here are really good at customer service, and for that Brian (and the rest of us) can be rightfully proud.
  22. Yes--I do. Cliff is using a Brass Monkey belt, which allows you to cinch it up nice and tight. Might be something to look into.
  23. It's a friggin' great match! I've shot the last couple years and I'm a loyal WSSST customer as long as they're willing to run the event.
  24. Thanks Chuck. On your advice, I have been PM'ing with her also. Hopefully we can get it all figured out! Normally it would be no problem to wait until the match announcement comes out, but we have this deadline coming up and need to get our tickets booked.
