  1. Most "sponsored" shooters dont get nearly as much stuff/money from the sponsors as people believe. Sponsored shooters also tend to spend a lot of time and money on practice before the match, so I'd say that in most cases a sponsored shooter spends more money AND time than an unsponsored shooter does per match. There seems to be a large misperception that somehow or another the top shooters "spend" less on this sport and "win" more. Nothing could be further from the truth. If we actually pulled out receipts for a shooting budget I think most here would blown away at the amount of money the top shooters have put into this sport. Oftentimes the statement "the B and C shooters drive this sport" is made and goes unchallenged. I don't mean to take anything away from those shooters, but that statement is usually made at the expense of the top shooters who are somehow seen as privaleged all the while not recognizing that very often they have spent exponentially more (in time, $$$, and effort) to gain the skillset they have. This supports the sport as well.
  2. Todd, I have had good luck with Ramshot TAC and Hornady 178's in an 18" DPMS barrel. I don't have my chrono sheets handy but IIRC I was pushing 2575ish with 42 grains in Fed brass.
  3. I don't know if the Tripp 10 rounders will fit. My assumption is that they won't. But keep in mind if you plan on shooting major PF in singlestack you can have no more than 8 rounds in the mag anyway. Personally I would also suggest getting the 10mm mags as that allows you more adjustment for your overall length.
  4. I bought one of the newer Trojans. No reliability work at all. Box stock except for grips and a Techwell. WIth Wilson 10mm mags it has been flawless and I love the way it shoots/feels.
  5. Before this turns into another drug out discussion on DQ's and whether or not there is an appropriate % for any given match, members may want to consider that Mutligun Nats and FNH were both two of the most critical matches of the year which in turn dictates that shooters are leaving not room out on the edge of their performance envelope. You can try to blame stage design, abandonment buckets, the sun, moon or any of a number of things but the overriding fact is that when you race, sometimes you crash.
  6. Love my tube.... For your first UFC fights I wish it had gone better, it's a pretty cool sport.
  7. Trevor, Some might argue that 9mm is a cost savings over Super. If you plan on picking up your brass there is some slight savings. My angle on this is I can get almost all the 9mm brass I need and never have to hunt to get my brass back. So in the end I am not saving much money but I shoot without the unholy hassle of walking all over the range bent over like a broken backed old man.
  8. Not really....Dana/UFC really wanted to break into a major network there for much of the power is in Fox's court. If Fox is the customer and Dana suggests to them that an hour program with a couple of undercard fights would be best but Fox says no they just want to program for the one fight, Dana and the UFC weren't in much of a position to push that issue. Kinda like guys who want a carbon fiber tube that is cut to a custom length. You may not suggest that as the best product but as a vendor it's better to get your foot in the door than tell them to go get bent
  9. Fortunately, UFC was on Spike was on opposite the match. One minute of fighting in an hour long show is ridiculous. Of course Dana White got his air time so it was worth it to............Dana White If you had caught any of the prefight press from Dana he had expressed concern several times about showing only one fight. He stated very clearly that his greatest fear was a first round knockout. This lies squarely on the head of FOX not the UFC. They were the ones pushing very hard for only a single fight.
  10. It is just as secure as any other bladetech holster without a thumb break. They all only use screw tension to keep the gun secure.
  11. From my experience JP is pretty much un-heard of in tactical circles. But just because JP has this great record does not mean that no other brand should be considered. Pat With respect to your first statement it is exactly this thought that is very wrong. True JP doesn't sell a lot of gear to the mall ninja's at ARF.com but JP's inroads in "tactical circles" involves unheard of activities like designing the the Remington RSASS. It has been mentioned before that JP runs a very extensive LE program to include the "we got your back" rifle replacement program. These are all things that YOU were unaware of, however that has no connection to the rest of the tactical community being unaware of same. Not to get into a pissing match with "tactical" talking heads but Kyle Lamb runs JP products etc. You make the arguement that Pat Rogers lectures against the use of aftermarket triggers yet you advocate an aftermarket trigger. Which way do you want to take your argument? There have been many triggers discussed on this forum. Trigger feel is very subjective. Jerry Miculek and Mike Voight run the AR Gold triggers and advocate them very often, many here prefer the JP and some the Geisselle. My problem arose not with your subjective preference for the Geisselle ( I have tried them too) but with the blanket assumption that JP products are unreliable which is simply not true.
  12. I don't know about that, it's pretty damn hard to beat (in no particular order) Kurt Miller, James Casanova, Kelly Neal, Patrick Kelly, and Jeff Crambilt. Plus the 6-12 up and coming limited shooters from TacOps and the other limited guys that were finishing right behind the people above. +1 You really have to look at the number of folks who can win the division. With respect to Limited/Irons there may not be many shooters but it is a damn sharktank if compared to TO.
  13. If you choose a Nordic tube use a clamp. However the Briley Extension Tubes are designed differently and do not need a clamp.
  14. Dave, is very correct in the idea that the crimp is very important. But the dimensional consistency that I mentioned also takes into account overall length and the diameter/circumference of the case head. Although some of the more expensive shells have a higher quality plastic designed to give the end user more reloads the overall length and case head still vary quite a bit. These two dimensions (IMO) are extremely important. If you can imagine only holding the rim of a shotgun round and trying to control it when the center of its gravity is toward the shot filled end you can begin to see how variances in shell length and the caserhead will severely effect how much the end of the shell is moving through out the loading cycle.
  15. It would work very well. And yes it is the same op system. This gun setup (vr barrel) is superior to the MKI in my opinion. All the same mods, tubes, and accessories will work.
  16. taking four days off from work at least $1500 in fees, ammo, hotel, flights, rental car etc knowing that in the very unlikely event I do make it into the top 8, I couldnt make it to Vegas in January it was a bit of a cluster last year So yeah, Ive also decided not to go... On top of economics there is the matter of planning. For some the mid season changes/developments/adjustments etc can't be accomodated by work schedules.
  17. Yes you are totally off base. As my Saiga will feed Walmart Remingtons like a sewing machine but will consistenly choke on Federal Gold Target....the difference being a dimensional one....overall shell length. As to hull deformation my bolt is relieved to allow loading on a closed bolt so the contact is much less. However if you insert a loaded mag of ammo and wait any of the shells I have tried will deform to the extent they are touching the bolt.
  18. Pat I wouldn't say that either way. Sometimes you make me wonder where you get your info as there are plenty of "tactical" triggers that are popular. One thing to keep in mind is that the SD3G triggers are a far cry form the two stage full auto trigger you speak of with respect to military use. Just wondering where the blanket statement concerning JP's came from. I have had a single bad Geisselle as you have had a single bad JP....I don't think either experience warrants a statement that Xtrigger isn't reliable.
  19. Why convert or shorten or buy the 22 at all? There is really very few matches where a ten round rube can't be used and that puts the tube at 26" anyway so leave the 26" alone and shoot it.
  20. Mike, Not being argumentative but what does that mean to you exactly? When I was getting my Saiga ready and working out the break in bugs I sat down and put a mic and caliper to about fifteen different loadings and I could not find any better dimensional consistency from AA STS stuff on the high end to all the Wally World stuff on the low end. I will agree more $$ buys better patterns (as they are designed to) but we are talking reliability here so as long as the shell is powerful enough to cycle the gun in question the dimensional consistency begins to be the determining factor.
  21. The JP can be set lighter but the Geisselle has a much more positive reset and feels more controllable to me. Its also more reliable in the long haul. Pat I don't know how you are judging reliability but I have several JP's with 10's of thousands of rounds and no trigger related malfunctions to date. I have had two SD3G's and one had to go back after about a thousand rounds because it started doubling. Now all mechanical parts can have problems but the fact of the matter is JP's track record is simply years ahead of the Geisselle. As to which trigger feel is better is very subjective. I do like the very positive reset of the Geisselle but I when you factor in the lighter just as crisp pull of the JP and a very good reset itself I think it is the better overall trigger.
  22. 1/200 seems to me to be about as good as we can expect. I know some folks will argue the good ammo argument but more money on ammo usually results in a much higher quality powder/wad/shot combo than they do in dimensional consistency. It is this dimensional inconsistency that we cannot get away from in shotguns. There is simply larger tolerances at every juncture with shotguns in there manufacture and parts and coupling that with ammo that can have large dimensional variance and I think the reliability standard cannot be near what we expect out of guns utilizing metallic cartridges.
  23. where? been looking for months! Please show me one example of an M2 with 3 gun mods for less than $800
  24. I suggest you re-read your policy. Most policies have low dollar limits on certain items like firearms for losses by theft (as such items post a particularly high theft risk), but do not impose any such limit for loss by fire. It's something to consider when deciding between a couple of safes and one is thicker steel but less fire resistance than than the other - forcing a trade-off between the two. Most policies consider firearms lost by fire to be covered under the "household contents" limitation, with no separate cap. If you have guns lost by theft, be sure to itemize the scopes as a separate item. I know this worked for a friend who lost some guns in a residential burglary about 20 years ago. Having just changed insurance carriers this last year I found this to not be the case. Of the 9 different companies I got quotes from (Dave I am with Farm Bureau now) only one had a firearms (called sporting goods) limit of $5000 the others varied from $1000-2000. Only one included sporting goods (firearms) as household contents. Obviously YMMV but it seemed that almost every insurance company had built in reservations about covering firearms and/or paying out firearm claims should they become damaged under the policy. Infer what you will about said companies but I would have never went through 9 quotes if that wasn't the case. Actual UL ratings on gun safes are pretty rare - usually, it's "self rated" or a rating from a second tier testing lab. That's why I included a qualifier to show that even a high quality safe with a UL listing was not foolproof or that at the very least many interpretations can be applied to the standard rating. Now to the specifics of my coverage, the company I am with allowed me to increase my contents coverage to include my firearms while in my home and I was able to purchase a rider that covers up to three firearms and accessories anywhere I am traveling in CONUS ($15000 CAP).
