  1. Just out of curiosity what exactly does soft copper and lead bullets do to a stainless or carbon steel barrel in the first twenty (30,50 whatever) rounds in a break in procedure do that the first mag dump won't ? I am not being a smartass, I am truly curious as there are many theories but I have not been exposed to one that objectively explains the difference.
  2. go shoot it Here is my preferred method
  3. Need more ammo capacity for next year With some screws a little expoxy and some spare kydex sheet you should be able to easily mod two Choate carriers to be 6X6...probably a lot cheaper too!
  4. Yes people have done it but the question in my mind is why? If as you say it is for financial reasons then you are truly deep into false economy. Just got back from Ironman and I shot 500+ rounds of rifle using my normal lot of rotated .223 brass. So even on the high side I donated $40 to the range. But given that one or two malfunctions with rifle brass can ruin your match why try to save $20 on only leaving steel cases. I had well over $1000 into the trip so why would such a small savings be attractive if it can negatively effect the whole trip?
  5. I know several folks who have tried to get the 20 rd mags to be reliable (R&R's as well as others) but they can be incredibly finicky. I believe this is due to the fact that there is so much spring pressue to overcome that the gun's timing is thrown off. ''
  6. Jaime, Given the pain in the ass that the primer sweep is to get exactly right I used dykem to make witness marks and then when exchange toolheads I make sure not to touch it.
  7. Just yesterday I needed to load up a few hundred rounds of .40 on a 1050 setup in 9mm. Took me about 15 minutes to do the changeover including the bulletfeeder conversion as well. Changing out the 1050 is no more or less complicated than the 650 and offers the benefits of the swager. I find with all the new Non Toxic brass the swager is a godsend with the pistol rounds and lowering the occurrance of priming problems. Getting your 1050's tuned up is a bit more complicated but once it's done it seems to work much better than the 650.
  8. Pushing it out with your finger is not always an indicator as to how far it protrudes due to the fact that it relies on some inertia to reach it's full travel. From what I see in your pic the pin travel appears ok but you don't know how far the hammer strike is causing it to go forward. Get in touch with Lon when you can. My experience with TacSol has been great. Since these uppers (even Nordic's) go on so many different rifle lowers there are many problems that can arise. It is usually just a little trial and error that gets them working well with each individual's setup. This is where the Manufacturer is a great help as they have a broader base of experience.
  9. RINGS! If you have ever played with all of his AR platform stuff you will almost forget that he makes rings
  10. Glen, Totally excited to have you at the match
  11. I didn't read the whole thread so I apologize if I am repeating advice. Your STI has a JP trigger with the yellow hammer spring. I was experiencing the same symptoms you describe in your first post (also running a JP trigger with yellow hammer spring). Switching to the JP RED hammer spring cured all the problems. My TacSol upper has been perfectly functional with all of the ammo I have run in it since.
  12. 1 can of Tactical Bacon to be used to bribe Roscoe into not chewing off a valuable appendage. For those who don't know Roscoe, he is the only dog in the world badass enough to walk up to Chuck Norris and mark his territory on Chuck's boots
  13. To note there is no procedure for opening or closing the Pelican or Storm latches. Simply open the latch or close the latch as needed with the case in any convenient position. I have many difficult accomplishments to reflect upon which reinforce my masculinity. I am happy that it is not necessary to number opening a rifle case among them. YMMV If you're gonna be dumb, ya gotta be tough Didn't really think of this before as I had rifle cases on my brain but for the last 8-9 years we have been using Pelican cases exclusively to carry our gear in the fire department. A rough guess would be that we have well over 300 cases in service at any one time. To say that the level of abuse they receive in day to day operations is excessive would be an understatement. Very rarely do we take one out of service for a structural/integrity failure. Generally if there is a failure the circumstances are horrendous enough that there is always a " no shit there I was " story to go with them. Personally we actually lost two boxes out of a compartment when a door opened on the freeway and other than some road rash both boxes were fine and there contents were unharmed.
  14. You are missing that the student in question found the test on the AP test site. Previous years tests are often hosted their under the test preparation section of the site. So in essence, the student in being diligent in there preparation for an upcoming exam practiced on a test that a LazyAss teacher recycled. The teacher/principal then proceeded to punish the student for studying harder than anyone else. Funny -- but having been raised by an academic, I'm certain that he would have considered that behavior to be cheating. (He also would have drafted his own exam, not recycled one.) In all of the schools I've attended, that behavior would have resulted in failing the class at best, and expulsion at worst. Two wrongs do not make a right.... Nik I have had a fair amount of education (bachelors and about half done with some graduate work not mention teaching at the collegiate level) and I have very rarely encountered a class where professors did not make their previous tests available in the library, online, disk, etc. Every major medical, law, certification board or certificate test is available in several different study formats as well. Not to mention the hundreds of test preparatory classes available that tutor and prepare candidates for those tests/boards. I can't imagine how anyone in academia could call it cheating with a straight face as such a huge portion of any academic subject is simply the consolidation/reformatting/redirected mixture of previous academic work. With regard to utilizing readily and equally available test preparation exams being an offense worthy of failing or expulsion....I have never experienced such a policy nor heard of one that even addresses this behavior in any negative fashion.

  16. Did the same with my mother......there isn't time nor space in my life for someone who can do nothing but inject their bitterness and anger.
  17. It's rather anecdotal but the one complaint I have never heard about a JP barrel (heatsink or not) is inaccuracy.
  18. Wrong, I get 9 brass for damn near free so picking it up isn't worth my time. Part of the charm of 9 major is never having to look like a hen pecking the ground for lost brass. And it lessens the chance of a gust of wind blowing your kilt up when you're bent over You're still just upset that you couldn't resist the urge to pay for my college tuition when the winds were swirlin
  19. Like most here I have several options. MSA Sordin Supreme Pros , ESP Analog plugs, custom molded rubber plugs, Surefire EP3 and EP4 ear defenders, foamies etc. MSA Sordins Pros....absolutely stunning audio quality, great battery life, comfortable, easily able to get a good cheek weld for me compared to other muffs, durable (for me), easy to use for conversing during other shooters runs Cons...they require gel ear pads for better NRR and comfort, goofy battery change because I always screw up the + - order (on me), hot in the summer ESP Analog Plugs Pros.... light and cool year round, no interference with long guns, decent sound quality, easy to use for conversation during shooting Cons...sound quality is not as good as Sordins (wish I would have sprung for the digitals), somewhat difficult to adjust sound level, $$$ spendy for analog sound, for some reason cause my ears to produce a lot more wax than other in ear hearing pro. Custom Molded Earplugs Pros....excellent NRR and protection, comfortable even in hot weather, no interference with long guns, reasonable price for a custom fit Cons...difficult conversation, more difficult to hear range commands, start buzzer etc Surefire EP3 and EP4 Pros..... inexpensive and comfortable with no interference for long guns Cons.... for me there is not nearly enough NRR, I recently wore them for a rifle stage and came away with my ears ringing. It could just be something related to my anatomy but I have relegated them to my helmet at work for when I need a little earpro on scene. Foamies Pros..... inexpensive, comfortable, downright cheap, no long gun interference, and good NRR, easily kept in every available nook and cranny for ease of use and availability Cons.... difficult conversation or range commands
  20. If that made you wet your pants what happens if you watch something that is actually funny ?
  21. No they don't take credit cards. But Tony at Velocity Shooter vouched for them. He said Salient is extremely busy with production of these shotguns. Tony didn't have any completed Salients in stock, so I did some scrounging around the internet and located a NIB 21" M2 for $1,100 OTD. Once I got it, I called Tony back. He was nice enough to provide me with the cell number of a contact person at Salient with the strict condition I not give it out. I called the guy at Salient, talked with him for about ten minutes about the shotgun package, prices, and options. He said they are VERY busy and it seems everyone all of a sudden wants one of these shotguns. Decided to make the move and shipped off my M2 with a payment check for the work. I'm looking at about a month wait to get the gun back. Worse comes to worse, Salient is only about a six hour drive away in case I need to do business face to face. What I have noticed is the price on the Salient M2 is slowly but steadily going up. Price is now hovering around $2550 for a new, complete gun - but it seems they're all spoken for. I wanted to get my hands on one before they start nearing $3K. This is squarely not a specific indictment of Salient or Tony at VS...just a relation of a story from the precision rifle world. There was a smith only four or five years ago who was very highly regarded and had a solid history of good work and many fans. He had some of the same practices with respect to pre payment, cash only etc. Anyone who dared question the process was pounced upon pretty hard on the forums and the smiths reputation was repeatedly touted. The smith got in over his head and began using new customer $$$ to finish waiting customer's guns and ultimately wound up hosing a little over a hundred customers at $2-3K per, many of whom never saw a dime of their money nor their parts back. At last sighting the ATF and Feds were involved etc etc etc. The point of relating this story is not to imply any indication of wrongdoing by any of the smiths mentioned in this thread, but simply that in the custom gun world things can and do happen. You have to be completely comfortable with all aspects of the build to prepay $2500+ to get a gun built regardless of reputation. Call the smith in question, and if they are unwilling to meet your comfort level then maybe it is an indication the fit may not be right. The converse is especially true in that many of the smith's mentioned in this thread will work very hard to accomodate your concerns.
  22. Off the top of my head: Lighten the bolt carrier by machining away some of the metal, make the bolt able to accommodate a ghost load, and ion-bond. Lighten the trigger pull/match trigger job Machine/bevel the metal around the loading port Radius/smooth out the rough spots on the shell latches Welded lifter Oversized safety button Dave's Metal Works mag tube, Wolf mag spring Stippling on the grip area of the stock and fore end Arredondo bolt release button I went with the Salient because it was "one-stop shopping". Send the gun to one place, one time, and get everything done at once.
  23. Most are using the ELS just fine. The bigger QLS is directed at the bulkier duty type holsters. Of course this could change depending on the holster you wanted to try.

  25. Actually its pretty easy to not fall in love with a second focal plane optic that kicks the $2k pricepoint when there is some great First Focal Plane glass at much more reasonable prices. The second focal plane is not a big deal to me and it actually is a good thing in some ways. For example the dot on the BRT is 9 moa on 1x allowing faster up close shooting. (its 1.5 moa at 6x) For long range where I would need the bullet drop (past 300) I plan on cranking up to 6x anyway. The Swarovski combines clear glass, great field of view, good day light visible illumination with a bullet drop compensator and it has a 6x on the top end which I know is of debatable value. For me I don't see a need for first focal plane on non precision style rifle scopes. Just my opinion but I think the Swarovski z6i is the best three gun scope going and it seems to be used by a lot of the top shooters. Pat Pat, There is a distinct advantage to a FFP in our game. The disadvantage of second focal plane goes hand in hand with the aforementioned FOV problems when shooting on 6x. IF for example it is advantageous to run a stage at 3x or 4x due to the FOV needed to see the targets without forgetting one. You have to now recalculate the values of your BDC. So while the Swaro is a good piece of glass having a BDC that changes with each power adjustment and necessitates recalculation on the part of the shooter is at a distinct disadvantage to the same FFP scope which doesn't have any of those downfalls and yet retains all of the advantages.
