  1. For shooting sports, front range Colorado is hard to beat.
  2. Clays is the bomb diggety for 45 acp. I load about 3.8 @ 1.250 with a 230 coated bullet and its like riding a waterbed - nice and soft.
  3. I use WST with 180s in my 40s and love it. Low recoil, smoke and it meters well. Usually available too
  4. Does anyone make a 40xl chamber gauge with only 1 or 5 holes? Its a great product, but not sure I need the $100+ Shockbottle.
  5. Second for Eggleston Munitions. Good bullets and good people. I have shot their 9 mm, 40 and 45 cal offerings and always been pleased.
  6. I am a regular SS division shooter and love it so am a little biased. For your stated 1k ceiling, I would get a Springfield Armory Range Officer, your choice of caliber, and shoot the &^%% out of it. When you start to notice it, spend a couple hundred bucks on some top end trigger parts (EGW) and get a trigger job done. I like what biker said too - when there aren't many SS guys shooting I just compare my scores to the production dudes.
  7. Uncle Mike's for years - worked well but started to get a little loose how it fit on the belt. Out of necessity one match I used my Bladetech DOH 2011 holster. Fit isn't perfect but it works very well.
  8. Thanks guys. I will increase distance next time and see what that does.
  9. Hoping i can get some helpful hints on some weird readings i got yesterday on my Pro Chrono. I was shooting a 5 inch and a 6 inch 2011 through my Pro Chrono with sky screens attached. The 6 inch gun read fine with no inconsistent readings and i pulled an average average fps of 953 over 10 shots. With the same rounds, I expected the 5 inch to be slightly slower. What I would up with were some shots right were they should have been (900s) but lots of readings of 1200 or higher. Same rounds, same position on the bench. The day was warm and slightly overcast but plenty of sun. Chrono was about 5-6 feet from the bench. With this load all of my shots should have been in the mid-900s. Seems odd I would get so many readings that were 300 fps too high and only from the shorter barreled gun. Ideas?? Thanks, I am new to owning a chrono so am still learning all the tricks of the trade.
  10. The same thing happened to my 586-4 a couple years ago so it might be some problem endemic to the 586. I ordered the part from Numrich and set it with a couple punches.
  11. What made you want to give up caffeine this year, Charlie? Were you getting any side-effects or just wanted to get rid of it? I have a pretty strong addiction to Diet Coke - I drink a lot of water too, but sometimes I really "hit the wall" energy wise if I'm shooting/fishing in really hot weather (like last year's Mile High). Wondering if some of the stuff in DC might be too blame. Giving it up will be a hell - I start thinking about getting a diet soda when I am taking a shower in the morning.
  12. Im using CFE Pistol and its ok - not great. I bought a bunch when it was the only thing on the shelf and I was running out of Clays. I load to an OAL of 1.250 with moly 230 bullets. Nice and soft but really dirty.
  13. I think its comparable to most other things that adults - mostly but not always men - do for leisure activities. I have friends that dump untold cabbage into golf, fishing, fly fishing, ice fishing, motocross, camping, etc. I have friends who spend big bucks going to NFL football games and getting the NFL satellite package. And they never leave town. My brother has 8 horses and a donkey. Pick your poison, be honest with your budget and enjoy your sport while your health still allows it. If possible, take your wife/kids/friends. Life is short.
  14. Im loading for an STI Edge and have an OAL of 1.185. Has been working really well for me.
  15. Great job Charlie. And a bullet feeder for a bonus!
  16. What lcs said. I mostly just take a rug into the SA as well, but taking a bag in is not a DQ. Its only handling live/dummy ammo in a SA, in any manner, that will get you the DQ.
  17. Loaded, primers and powder. Although my powder tube looks like a$$ because of doing it that way.
  18. I probably average 2 a month; more in the summer less in the winter. Fishing, ice fishing, son's HS sports and general family down time take the rest.
  19. I'm running a 45 SA Loaded model in SS Major. Personally, I think the Wilson mags are expensive and overrated. I am running CMC shooting star for about half the price and they work fine. Lots of good choices out there for mags but the big thing is to maintain them. If I were going to go premium class I would get the Tripp Cobras. Most 45 SS guys I know, myself included, run straight 230 gr RN. I shoot Eggleston coated and plated when I can get in on a group buy. As far as springs, I recently down-shifted to a 13 lb recoil spring and 18 lb MS and really like the recoil impulse. It runs 100% with 168 pf ammo and seems to "nosedive" less than before.
  20. Yeah, they are coated. I don't have my specifics in front of me so wont quote the load, but I am getting about 168 pf with these so they are not super hot. By "the opposite" do you mean yours are clean running?! I don't like the load as much as Clays, but aside from being dirty it runs fine.
  21. I have shot a butt-load of Eggleston's 124 out of a G17 with no issues at all. Mostly over moderate loads of TG.
  22. I've been running CFE in my .45 below an Eggleston 230 and I like it OK. I'm loading long, like 1.26, and right now this is my load for SS matches. Recoil is nice and soft and its plenty accurate but it is a really dirty load. I mean filthy.
  23. I think you will love the 550. I would get rid of some of my guns before I gave up my 550 - its just been solid from day one. Its been my experience that you will know when you need a 650 or 1050.
  24. Thanks boss. Looks like just what we need. You going to P-lo on Sunday?
  25. Does anyone have a link to a good video example of footwork technique for entering a shooting box/shooting position? My son and I are working through Ben Stoeger's book on dry fire drills this winter and are having problems with technique for entering a position so you are able to setup and shoot as fast as possible. I want to get a good video or two to use as reference to make sure we aren't just "making *&^% up" as we practice. Hopefully the weather in CO will hold up and we can see the Big Panda do a couple runs this Sunday. Its been a cold, snowy year so far. Thanks! Husker
