  1. Is this ammo really worth it? It looks like the best deal is 32 cents a round, but I got Federal brass 55 grain stuff locally here for 30 cents a round on sale, including a dry box. Is Hornady stuff any better?
  2. If I remember, there are a whole bunch of videos and stuff on how to do it yourself at AR15.com... I'Ve seen them do it to Tac 30s and stuff, too. I don't know anything about circuits but I would check there.
  3. I think I might have to look for the 21. The 22 matches we shoot here have 2" targets at 40-50 yards, so magnification is a big plus. I like the idea of a good mount, but i think maybe finding a used scope and not worrying about it might be the best bet... I was hoping there was something like the DMS (I see it as a less expensive tac 30) but i guess it's not out there. Anyone have a good, cheap tr 21?
  4. I ran my 22 can on an SBR for a local but big steel match. I was in the running for first or second place overall, and was really killing the targets. With no crack to worry about and a total elimination of recoil, i thought it was going to be a huge advantage. Then gas blew back under my glasses, effectively blinding me on the clock. It took a good 15 seconds of crying and wiping to clear it out, then I was blurry for the rest of that stage. It was the last stage of the day, and I lost the match because of it. I will run a can again though. This time with a dedicated upper with no gas system and a side vent. Oh yeah, bigger glasses, too
  5. I think it might depend on what you're trying to get out of the sport and where you are. I shot my first 3 gun with a stock Stag 16" with a red dot and Herter's ammo. I couldn't hit anything at 200 yards, but inside 50 my times were right there with the best of them. Then I started to upgrade as I learned more about the sport, and what I needed to do to make the shots I had to. Put on a comp, free float tube, and JP springs in the trigger ($100 for all that) and started to hit the gongs occasionally. Switched from Herters to real ammo, which was only $1 a box more. Then I slapped on a used Trijicon TR 24 I paid way too little for ($425 or so). dropped in a timney trigger group (don't get too hung up on which group, try them all, they are all good but it's personal preference). Now I'm into the whole gun for around $1200, it's set up EXACTLY how I want it to be, and I have been kicking ass with it. I actually timed out on my first 200 yard stage. Last match, I won the 200 yard stage. That's in less than a summer and with less practice than I care to admit...
  6. I can't wait to shoot these matches with the rest of my Team!!! We might even practice this time!!!
  7. I run major 45, and the recoil is tough weak hand. You could work out so you have no weak hands I'm righty, so left is my weak. I put my left foot forward just a bit, and bring my right fist up against my left shoulder where it meets the chest (Pec minor area) for support. I also try to lean a bit forward. One other trick that really helps is to cant the gun in about 15 degrees towards your midline. I'm not talking about a "Gangsta Grip", but just in so the recoil goes towards your center of gravity and not out and away. By doing this I can shoot weak hand faster and more accurately than I can shoot 9mm weak without those tricks.
  8. Hey all, random question, but I thought I might be able to find the answer here if anywhere. Basically, I'm looking to build my 22 trainer rifle into an almost exact copy of my 3 gun rifle. I have it down with barrel length, tube, trigger, stock, etc, but right now I have a Trijicon TR 24 on my game gun and a DMS on the 22. I'm wondering if there is a way to get a scope that has the same basic set up as the trijicon (green triangle and 1-4x) without spending a fortune and buying another trijicon. It doesn't have to be super duper quality, but I do shoot 22 only competition with this rifle so it has to at least hold zero. Probably would never need the tritium option, either. Just wondering if you could point me in the right direction! I would buy a TR 24 if I could find one at a bargain price, but wanted to see if I could save some ammo money by going this route .
  9. I like them all! My buddies made fun of me for shooting in 22 matches, then they realized how much of a blast it is to shoot 75 steel targets in under 90 seconds. And pistols are fun. And shotguns are fun (not reloading them) I cut my teeth as a whipper snapper shooting skeet and trap, and then IDPA. Couple that with an AR with a real optic and some practice, I'm a formidable 3 gunner! I do love them all, and you will most likely catch me carrying a pistol (or an 11" AR pistol in the car ) and fondling a rifle at home. 30 rounds of 223 out of an 11" barrel is just too much fun to not do it all the time! Guns
  10. I just got mine, too. Used a CTG gift certificate I got off the classifieds here (I think I paid $150) and got this $400 set of lasers! I have them on everything I seriously carry.
  11. That popped up on my FB feed from there... Very sexy! They do nice work. Can I have it?
  12. I put a Timney in my 3 gun AR, and loved it so much I bought a duplicate for my 22 trainer. It's worth it for sure! I like the McCormick, but watched a buddy drop one in and had his rifle go burst for a while. Sure it could be adjusted, but that scared me.
  13. Hey guys, I'm one of the firm believers in 22s for practice. I run SS and I have a wilson combat 22 set up (almost) exactly the same. Granted, I used some cheaper parts and a smaller magwell, but the trigger time translates. Plus it's one platform. I recently set up an AR with the same stock, same tube, same mount, same aftermarket trigger, but running a different scope. I'm having a hard time paying $800 for another TR 24. I have the same 1x4 (a DMS) but it's good practice, mag changes, etc. Plus around here there are a lot of 22 only matches, so the pistol and the rifle help me tear it up! The rifle paid itself off in the first 2k rounds I shot out of it, which was really quicker than I thought it would be.
  14. Real men! And those of us too stubborn to switch to 40, or who don't shoot limited. I like my SS in 45, it's easy to load, not much more money than 40, and I feel like there's no recoil with a 230 gn round nose.
  15. what about a walking/shooting stick that had water filtration built in? that way it's fewer pieces to carry and you could have clean water wherever you go...
  16. I had my TR 24 set up like that for all of about 10 minutes. Then I realized I would get much better accuracy by floating a tube and cutting the front sight off (so I could reach way out there). Went from timing out on a stage with 8" plates @ 200 yards to ringing them 1 for 1 without any practice. It must be the scope!
  17. RippSpeed, what if you really like the thumb rest and then decide to put on on the HD pistol? I'm all for using what works, and I love shooting a 1911 with that big ol' safety acting like a *thumb rest [generic]*. Plus I have one of those on my HD/Carry 1911s so it works out all around...
  18. I shoot both games with 1911 style guns. I run SS in USPSA, will be shooting a 2011 in 3 gun and some matches, built a Wilson 22 1911 for iron rimfire SC and have a ruger 22/45 I'm building for open rimfire. This means same grip angle, same trigger, same safety, etc. I might even get rid of that ruger in favor of a different (fully 1911) set up. I also carry a 1911 and keep one next to the bed. what can I say, I like the consistency and don't like change in my old age (28) :roflol:
  19. Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but I aim at the first target in shooting position, then cock my wrists so the gun points at the flag. This means I have very little movement in my arms and body to worry about, and just have to focus on snapping the gun back to position on target, which is easy once you practice it. As the rule reads:The competitor must wait for the command to fire while pointing/aiming their gun at the flag. I think this meets those requirements and is the quickest.
  20. Hmmm.... an open build. That might be crazy enough to work. It also looks like you could get 9mm running major since you have so much extra barrel to gain speed, while using regular power (i.e. factory) ammo. plus a pretty amazing comp and a nice little AR scope. Or would I be "That Guy"?
  21. What part of PA? We have some amazing matches in Topton and York.
  22. Ok, I'm a single stack guy at heart, so forgive me as I stir the pot... but from the sounds of the rule change, I could be running an AR pistol in 9mm or 40. WIth a magpul angled for grip (does NOT make it an AOW from what I read).... Long sight radius, huge magwell, could tuck that carbine tube into a shoulder for long shots, and I could totally mod a ghost holster into something that would work.
  23. Thanks for all the help guys, it was driving me nuts! I was thinking and I remembered when I took it apart I thought it was weird there was no pin, and the spring was higher up. Thought I poked the pin out on removal, but when I put it back together (with a new pin!) it didn't work! Now my question is that as long as it proves reliable, any reason to not carry it like this?
