  1. So I sit down to start loading today after a fun steel match, and I can't get the first bit of rotation on the handle. Nothing forced or squeezed weird, just not working. It pops over, and I'm seeing the brass isn't lining up with dies anymore, and I have no idea what's going on. So the shell plate just seems to be spinning, and I take it apart. Looks like the drive hub nub is just clean broken off!!! This means when I go to pull the handle, the hub moves, but the shell plate doesn't. I need to get this fixed ASAP and want it done right. was hoping to work up a new load before the weekend. I tried calling Hornady, but they seem to only be open during normal business hours. Is there a way to get a hold of them sooner? What's the best number to reach? And does anyone know a way to fix this? (Don't say buy a Dillion... I like this press otherwise).
  2. Actually, John Moses Browning originally chambered the design that would in time evolve into the 1911 in .38 ACP (dimensionally identical to .38 Super, which is simply a higher pressure .38 ACP). The design was only rechambered to .45 ACP at the Army's insistence, it was not at Browning's preference. So if you want to make the "this gun should be chambered only in what John Browning intended" argument, then all our single stack 1911s should be chambered in .38 ACP - or maybe .38 Super if you want to go for the readily available modern version instead of the original obsolete cartridge. Damn... I had no idea. well, I will eat my words but I still think 45s are bad-ass! That's enough rhyme and reason for me. Plus with loaded ammo at like 15 cents/round for jacketed, I'm not too worried about 45 being too expensive. And that's what 22 trainers are for.
  3. I think it makes sense to shoot 40s if you already roll them. But of course, if the 1911 was meant to be anything besides 45acp that's how JMB would have made them! Plus thumping steel with a 230 gn slug at 170pf is very satisfying. And real men shoot a real caliber ;-)
  4. Have you tried practice? ;-) I'm a believer in shoot what works. If you never fumbled with the old magwell, why not just switch back to it?
  5. Well it has to be a bolt on, since I'm not changing the frame or anything. Will the techwells work with regular mags? I don't really want to change all my baseplates
  6. wow, I'm officially more confused than when I started! Keep the ideas coming!
  7. Hey all, I've been running a stock Baer Concept V with fiber optic target sites all this year, and I'm looking to make it perfect for SS next year. It wont ever be used in IDPA, but has to be SS legal. Since I reload 3x more than you limited shooters, I think a magwell would be worth the money. Just wondering what kind to get. I know DP and Techwell are big, but I don't get the whole gap/no gap thing. I also already like the Larry Davidson grips I'm sporting, but would modify them if needed to fit. What's the best magwell for me if I'm running Chip McCormick 8 rounders and don't want to tune all my mags? Also, what other mods do you all do for single stack? I'm having the worn stainless either bead blasted or recoated this winter, but currently I love the sights, trigger, and safety. Or should I just shut the heck up and spend the money on more components? Steve
  8. Thanks for the head's up... But I actually found a trijicon for about the same price (seriously!) so that's what is currently on my AR
  9. How do you make your dishwasher into a snow blower? Give her a shovel.... :surprise:
  10. Hey all, if you follow my posts, you probably know that I am, in fact, insane! I just ordered my first serious 2011. My goal is to get good with it and run in limited next season. I'm shooting SS now, have done production and IDPA before. Looking to shoot it in 3 gun for fun, too. It's a Fusion fit 2011 with 12 oz lightened 6" slide and barrel. All the other guts are good parts, and I hope to have it in hand soon (so no pics quite yet). My questions are, how do I make it look way more bad-ass?!?! It's in the white, so I will shoot it this season and send it out for a Christmas present to me. What is the best way to get it finished and look fast? (If I'm not going to win, I want to at least look like I should be winning). I want a nice finish that holds up well, and doesn't cost more than my SS Gun. ALso, what can I do to make the grips awesome? It's a stock, un cut, un fit black 2011 grip with fusion logo. I will need it cut and colored somehow, for sure. I'm looking for suggestions. Yes, I know I should spend this money on ammo and practice. I have money for that. I just wanna look great in the loser circle as I start winning my way to the top!
  11. try them both and see what you like! You can pick up an arched or a flat mainspring for under $20 on 1911forum.com. Then decide which fits you best and go for it. My game guns have flat, but I have a GI build with the arched and sometimes like that, too.
  12. tell your buddy I will happily trade him his silly mp5 for a nice AR, 3 gun shot gun, pistol, and small bag of cash.
  13. It's hard to stop thinking. I am new to reloading, and tanked a few matches due to gun malfunctions. I learned that my gear has to work, and then I don't have to worry about it. So now that it does, and I don't worry about the gun going bang, i just have fun! people take this stuff too seriously. It's a game, after all. My worst day shooting is still better than most days at work I'm going to go shoot a full 75 round course of sporting clays. If I'm lucky, I will hit about 25. Doesn't make it any less fun!
  14. So I figured out the whole mental aspect thing yesterday while playing a round of golf. I hadn't picked up my sticks in 6 months, and on the first tee I ripped one far, and right down the center. I knew why. I said to myself "a_-hole, you have the skills. You know you do. So just do what you've been training for and rip this thing. It's a nice day, you've already seen a rabid fox, and the sun is so warm. You're skipping work and you love this. Enjoy it"... ( I do refer to myself as an Ahole sometimes, be if you know me, you know it's true). I had a few very hard shots to make, and I said "there is no last shot, there is no future shot, there is only this one. Look, plan, and do." I did these things. I finally concurred the mental aspect of golf, and I had one of the most fun, if not best scoring rounds of my life. Did pretty well for my skill set. I did the same thing at the range today. Went to a fun shoot and entered my 8 round 1911 in SS, and also in Tactical (anything goes, up to 20 rounds, etc). I told myself I was shooting for fun. I planned the stages, but would tape targets until I was called to the line. Then I walked to the line, and executed my plan. Front sight, press. Move with efficiency. I even found a few lines and moves nobody else did. I won't say it was nationals level shooting, but it was good. Smooth, not wasteful, not hurried but not slow. I saw the bullets hit the target (in my mind, if not for real), called shots, and had some damn fine runs. Joked the whole time, and even taped my own targets. Scores are posted, 1st place in single stack, and 6th in Tactical, even with 3x the reloads. What did I learn? Trust that you know the fundamentals. The hours and work are under your belt, go for it. Relax, have fun, enjoy it. This is a game, after all. Don't let a bad shot or stage through you There is no last shot. there is no next shot. there is only this one. Front sight, press.....
  15. Check out Larry Davidson grips. (don't work for them, just love them). He makes each set custom, and for something under $70. His grips are sick! the horned lizards I have wouldn't slip out of my hand if the gun was on fire, or shooting 500S&W. It's more grip than I would carry, but perfect for this stuff.
  16. It was 185 degrees out? Damn, it never got that hot in Daytona
  17. damn that's sexy! Can I haz it?
  18. I'm running an SX2 to pretty good effect, but don't have a million rounds through it yet. I picked up a "used" 3.5" model that was most likely never fired. It runs light loads like a champ, and with a nordic tube and bolt extension. I am 9+1 and good to run! Paid only $600 for the gun with at least one choke tube, too. Can't beat that price! It was cheaper than just replacing the barrel on my old 1100 (since they wanted like 280 for the barrel, and i got $300) in trade.
  19. I'll be there with my rifle and maybe a pistol. plus a $250 gift certificate from my work to donate! Plus Hannah will be there to make it rain 22 shells
  20. Man i'm excited for this match! Heard you guys had fun but sucky weather. something about a tornado?
  21. Mix it into your powder and have that nice smell every time you pop a round off. makes you feel better about a mike a least...
  22. Really? I would go with the bodyguard. If it's what you carry, it's going to be good practice. I shot a BUG match with my Kel Tec p380. in that kind of use, it stopped working and I couldn't hit anything when it did. This is why I now carry something else... If it's just for fun/practice, shoot what you carry. If it's to game, shoot the XD
  23. I just tumbled 45, 40, 9mm, and 223 brass without sorting it first. It spent an hour in the tumbler and about 2 hours getting pulled apart. Not fatal, but surely frustrating... won't do that again
  24. My fav are the cookies/brownies/sammiches our team leader/chef makes us! also, what ever Pro2inPA leaves left over in the tactical wagon after the match... BTW, that jerky is all gone!
  25. Thanks all, I think I fixed it! Seems to be priming better, but I had a few bullets fall out, so I guess it's time to work on the crimp
