What helped me the most with off hand shots was to get a 22 LR upper and shoot 8" plates from 10 to 50 yds. After a couple of cartons (1000 rnds.) I didn't suck near as bad. The upper will pay for it's self in ammo savings and translates well to the full power AR. Keith

Have used the Win. 55 gr. fmj for close hoser stages and out to 100 with good results. We were playing around last week and shot them out to 500 yds. with irons and could consistently hit an IPSC sized target. Got 4 K around the first of the year for $45.00/k from powder valley, they now have intermittent supply.

Merlin, I'll be up front and admit I don't shoot irons in competition, but I have shot some of the best rifles set up with irons. As mentioned get the front sight out as close to the muzzle as possible. Benny knows how to do this as I have seen his work. Now zero for 300 yards and you lollipop at 200 and 100, it really works and it's fast. Let Trapr show you a couple of times and it will become clear. I encourage all optics shooters to try irons, give Kurt and Trapr some competition.

Colt SP1's are nice if you can find one.

Jeff, there is also a 1.5 to 6 Gameseeker that may work a little better. The field of view isn't what it needs to be, I think around 60 ft. on low power where a Meopta is 110 ft. I got one of the 3X9 for a friend that is going to use it for varmints. They are seductively inexpensive and very clear and bright. Best bet is to try one at a store and see if it will work for you. I've found 2 power to be max for me on contact distance targets. Good luck! Keith

Trapr, I hate Varget the performance is good but it doesn't drop through a Dillon 550 worth crap. I refuse to load on a single stage (they both have case trimmers on them anyway) so have searched far and wide for ball and short cut stick that will work. Was using 2520 for 308 and got along well (175 SMK @ 2650) have now changed to RL 15 which meters very nicely through the 550. Now pushing the 175 @ 2720 with little pressure sign. I still use BLC-2 for 77gr. loads in .223 but have changed to N 133 for the 69 gr. Have shot the 69 gr. load from 104* at Ark. 3 gun to 16* out Coyote calling with great results. The RL-15 seems to be immune to temp also as the 308 performs consistantly from 20* to upper 90's from my experience. As always your results may differ. PM me for specifics. Keith

We usually get to shoot year round outside with maybe a couple of matches called cause of weather, not this year it has been two months of cabin fever. Varmint calling was about the only release. For a good rifle/multi gun match I like to see at least 5 stages with 15 to 40 rounds per stage. A couple of CQB stages and the rest longer stuff with some unusual shooting positions and some tight shots with swingers and drop turners, self resetting steel for all the long shots. Long paper is fine as long as there is a quick way to score it that doesn't envolve me running down range to tape. For the longer shots I feel they need to give the competitor a challenge but be in the 2 to 3 moa size for the range they are engaged from. I'd be pissed to drive 2 hr. for one stage and pay the fee's discussed here.

Trapr, remember it well, had no idea you had so many extraneous thoughts going through your head. Must learn to concentrate, might solve the problem of unhit targets. Do appreciate your concern for my predicament should you have chosen the dark side. I still tend to side with the competitor unless its clearly a fault, miss or obvious infringement of the rules. Bet there will be a "Trapr" rule at some future 3 gun match. Keith

Trapr, You fulfilled the act of shooting at the target and the rules say flangable targets must break to count, so if you step on it or kick it to break it you have technically satisfied the requirements for the hit. It is also not uncommon to be instructed to engage a target with knife, club or bare hands. Think you would have a strong case, why don't you try it next time out.

For that nice of a rifle just order a Dillon 550 and make your own. You will eventually end up loading your own anyway.

I went through this last summer and finially settled on a Holland brake. It has a low dust factor great reduction in recoil and is friendly to spotter. Mind you all brakes that work will increase the noise level to some extent, if you really want to be nice and it's legal where you are put a suppresser on it.

Reverse age envy, ain't it sweet! There has to be something good about getting old. Lets see take the optic off for this match put it on for this other match, doesn't sound that difficult.

SX-2, mine has treated me well. Like others have said, it fits, points and handles just right.

I've seen an ammo bag used before but he had to take it with him for the whole stage. As Trapr says most just mono pod and a lot of the time you have a rest provided , such as a tree, sandbag, or rock. Learn to use what is available or just off hand it.

I'm still not home from the match and just got a chance to look at the results and the posts on BE. Couldn't agree more with all the positive posts, this is my favorite 3 gun match this year. Despite the scoring issues this is a class act as reflected by all envolved. Linda, great to meet you, look forward to shooting the next match your envolved with. Top 6 scopes for three gun IMHO. They are not in any particular order. 1. Meopta K-Dot, what I've run for a year. 2. Horus vision Talon, what I ran the previous year. 3. Acog fixed power, what I ran before the other two. 4. S&B short dot, wish I could run it. 5. IOR, tried it but liked what I had at the time better. 6. Night Force 1.5-5, have shot a friends a lot and could use this scope no problem. I think if you practice with any of these they would be a superb scope for 3 gun. Keith

The wolf slugs have worked for me, bought 2 cases of them and still have over a case left. The SX 2 puts them into 4" at 50 yd. 1oz slug @ 1250 to 1300 fps. As Mick said the residue is a pain and his method for dealing with it does work about as well as I've found.
