Got this yesterday - extra special thanks go out to Bobby Keigans @FGW for the great deal on the P-T frame and to Glenn R (S&W wheelnut here) for providing the slide and the AWESOME machine work! If I could remember the dudes name that I got the spiral fluted SV barrel from (on this forum) I'd like to thank him as well. Gotta trim back the dust cover yet & I'll be good to go!
All I know for certain is that two of my SVI Limited pistols shot 180 moly with no problems and two of them would not. I bought a throater from Clymer, set the depth using one of the barrels that would shoot 'em, and throated the two that would not. Now, all four of them shoot 180 moly through 220 cast flawlessly with absolutely no other changes. And that's been after thousands of rounds.
Worked for me!
From the Clymers' web site:
THROATERS
Sometimes called “freebore reamers”, throaters are
used to extend the throat of a chamber in order to give
more clearance around the bullet.
Benny said the cause of his jams were a mis-alignment of the bullet in the brass case. I was wondering if that mis-alignment issue would still be the cause of jams even after the barrel had been throated.
Exactly what happened to me before I throated my barrel. Like yours, it would be an occasional event. So I bought a throater, made a dummy round at 1.260 with a cast bullet, and lengthened the throat until it would drop in and out freely. Since I shoot 174 PF loads I didn't worry about velocity loss and accuracy has not been affected at all.
I use 180's at 174 PF and a 10lb conventional Wolfe spring with 17lb main & 6 inch bushing barrel and sight goes up & back. If I put in the heavier bull barrel I will get a slight nose dive but it is noticeable.
I'll have to dig through my stuff, I had some pix of him, and Bennie Cooley, in the very early 90's at Missoula. He was shooting a Wilson 38 Super as I recall and kicked all our asses pretty good!
37 oz. Limcat 6 inch, 43 oz JV Dynamics LDC with tungsten sleeved barrel, 34.5 oz STI SDC with bull bbl & lightened slide, nearly 44 oz SV SDC w/sight tracker & steel grip.
Primers still available here - - at $44.95 per K, no breaks for buying in greater quantities. Plus tax. Seems as if guys aren't desperate enough to pay that price yet!
Ahahahahaha - welcome aboard azz-kicker! When you get as old as me you'll find out what "old and slow" really means! Say hello to the gang for me!
Rich
I've got two Infinitys and an STI - new style SV mags with aluminum followers work perfectly in all three guns in .40. No alterations were necessary in any of them; shoot them as they came from the factory. Oh, and the mags hold 21 rounds each but ya gotta slam 'em fairly hard to get them to seat on a closed slide.
Ahhhhhh...not so bad! I'm 62, can still run fast & jump high, work circles around guys half my age, bench press 350 pounds, and if it weren't for these terribly arthritic hands that can't grip shit, I'd be a happy fella!
None of my STI mags work in my SV metal grip. I can insert them perhaps 3/5's of the way in before they stop. Not certain how much squeezing would be necessary to make 'em fit but I think it would be a lot! All my new - and old - SV mags work in my three other plastic gripped pistols.
