  1. So we've been innundated with door to door salesmen lately. Most people in our area have a rental contract with the local utility for thier water heaters. A competitor has been trying every approach under the sun to con people into switching to a more expensive and more restrictive, penalty filled contract. They are telling people every lie under the sun to get them to sign. Sometimes they pose as safety inspectors, sometimes as reps from the utility, and the tactics they use are just slimey. Adding to the fun, is they rarely take no for an answer. They may leave Monday night, but Tuesday a fresh batch of idiots will be back with the same song and dance. My Lab/Shep mix has never bitten a single person, but he reads my attitude it seems. If I don't act warm to someone at the door, he goes into defence mode, and circles and pokes with his snout, sometimes with a low growl. Adding to the fun is the salesmen all seem to hail from a certain ethnic demographic who are not particularly fond of dogs. "Sir, could you take your dog inside? He makes me nervous." "You should be nervous." "Sir, could you take your dog inside?" "I could, but I'm not going to." Perhaps I shouldn't be taking as much pleasure from this. However, I confess to being a tad bitter. Mrs.Canuck223 actually fell for the first sales pitch. I read the contract when I got home from work, and called to cancel. My father wasn't as smart unfortunately. He's stuck paying $5 more per month. Fortunately in his case, his tank was 15 years old, so he just might save that amount per month in gas. As his next move will be to the funeral parlor, he's not likely to get stuck with any moving or early termination penalties.
  2. Jim, Was it real bad to start with? What was the down-side to the stock part? (most here won't customize it as that would make the gun illegal for USPSA Production division) I flat out love this gun, but to be kind, the safety isn't swell. I would never carry this cocked and locked, and I probably wouldn't shoot this in Standard/Limited. The safety works fine. It's positive on and off. It doesn't slip off or on. However, it's skimpy feeling, and not placed where a 1911 fan will want it to be. For production, I could care less. I thumb the hammer down and forget that a safety exists. I was tempted to get the plugs Grand Power offers to delete the safety all together.
  3. In my opinion, either the position is 100% volunteer, or 100% paid. There is nothing in between except heartache and strife. I fully appreciate that in the bigger clubs, hosting bigger matches that the job can take on herculean proportions. I don't have an issue with the club paying reasonable expenses, to compansate for the phone, fax, gas, and other real expenses of doing the job. I don't take issue with any match discounting or rebating the match fees of the officials who work the whole match. However, as soon as you start turning a volunteer position into a paid job, then out come the knives. The guy who does a generally good job, and learns from his mistakes, once on the payroll becomes a target. What we excuse of the volunteer, we berate of the employee. Make no mistake, paying the club president turns him into an employee with many unappy bosses.
  4. I know everyone grips a little about work, but I've never met anyone who works for an armoured car company who sounds like he does more than endure his work day.
  5. Dave: You could get rid of some of the clutter from the bench by mounting the power bar to the rafters and having the cables run to the ceiling. I mounted a bunch of sockets up there. When I built my bench at the last house, I made the mistake of building the shelves before I had time to figure out the flow of the bench and where I really needed stuff. This time I left the backing board bare until I had time to live with it for a while.
  6. I'm sure if you'd like, Rick will be happy to offer a platinum plated machined stainless steel version for 2k, but it won't work any better. While there is an obvious increase in loading speed, the value for me is ergonomic and reduced stress. I have less to distract me. My role is reduced to simply ensuring a smooth transition of the handle from stop to stop. Every 100 rounds, I stop to top up the primers, and toss another box into the RF100. Every second time I stop, I also top up the bullet feeder.
  7. Yep, that's an issue. Frankly I could care less about RL1000, but theres a guy up here with one and an RL1050 that I wouldn't mind. He doesn't want to part them out. If I can buy the package for a fair price and flip the RL1000 it might be worth my time. Sounds like the machine doesn't break much, and if you do some digging, you can find spares or if needs be, machine replacements.
  8. Just curious, as I know that in the day, the RL1000 was priced well above the RL1050, but what's a fair price in todays market?
  9. My neighbours are similar. Slightly older and childless. They've taken to my kids, and the kids prefer doing chores for them than us. Al used to drive a snowplow in the winter, so his own driveway would be full of snow. We would make sure to look after thier driveway when we finished our own.
  10. A similar theme was brought up on Global Village. The context was a true production match, where everyone would fire the same gun. It would be interesting to see how well attended a Glock/CZ/S&W match would be. Instead of a regular match, I could see such an event being run as a promotional match, by invite. Face it, wouldn't you buy the video of an all pro match where everyone shoot only a match supplied pistol and mags using factory ammo???
  11. Production legal ? I'm wondering the same thing. Isn't the squeeze cocker a single action for every shot?
  12. The only nice thing to come out of this bullet shortage is our MG importer is now making his own FMJ bullets.
  13. I believe a few clubs in Ontario and perhaps other provinces have entertained the idea of holding USPSA matches, mostly to get members who shoot in the US classified. The subject came up at the IPSC Ontario (almost)AGM, an as I recall, since it's not IPSC, IPSC Ontario don't see it as a problem. I don't know what USPSA has to say about that.
  14. STI GP6, with the FO front sight and Dynamic rear, and big mag button.
  15. My club has 58+ acres, seven ranges varying from 50 to 300 yards. It costs me $350/year plus membership in the Canadian Sports Shooting Association. It's 10 minutes from my door, at the edge of the built up area around Toronto.
  16. The only reason I can see for buying a 650 without a case feeder is as a lower volume accessory to a 1050.
  17. This get's brought up periodicly, and it generally turns sour quickly. I'm hoping by now most here realize I'm not an anti-american type of guy, but there are a few observations that could be viewed as such. 1) Most Americans who shoot IPSC will never leave the US, so it's of no great concern to them if USPSA follows a different path. 2) Unlike many organizations where membership numbers carry weight, IPSC is set up in such a way that each participating member nation has exactly the same weight. 3) Each nation has only one vote, and many votes are voted by proxy when smaller nations don't attend the World Shoots.
  18. My only caveat is that if you normally use pocket carry or whatever, try to stick with it.
  19. Done. We also include a special moment of thought for our brother in law, Capt. Jim Pyle who deployed to Bagram AFB last week.
  20. I'll have to have a quick look at the size of the chambers when the gun get's here. I have a .38 super sizing die in the safe that might do if my chambers are generous.
  21. I just picked up a new/used S&W 37 and figure I'll shoot barely 50 rounds a month, if that from it. I don't know that it's worth buying a second toolhead for the 1050. For practice ammo, I was thinking about buying 1000 .38 short colt cases and loading using my 9mm toolhead with just the sizing die replaced. Anyone else try this, or am I out to lunch?
  22. So it looks like my Christmas present this year is a used Model 37. As good luck and pack-rat tendancys allow, I just happen to have a brand new hammer and rebound slide for it. My plan was to slick up the redound slide and bob the hammer on the replacement parts, leaving the origionals alone. Anyone have a favoured method for bobbing the hammer? I was planning on doing the coarse work with a Dremell cut off wheel and finish with abrasive stones. (Yes Pat, I gots me a Dremel and now I'z a gumsmith)
  23. While waiting for my daughters school bus, the neighbours dog was sniffing around, friendly as hell. I let my own dog out to play. While shooting the breeze with the owner, he was unpacking from the hunt. His oldest boy got both deer. Turns out he was a member of the same pistol club.
  24. I think with my tennis elbow, the time is quickly approaching where the P/w autodrive is not just a nice idea. I'm tempted to set up a second toolead, just for processing te brass to aleviate any headaches when loading.
