At any of our matches that have new shooters, I go over the common causes for DQs (muzzle, finger, dropped gun, sweeping, ND) and how to avoid them. Had a new shooter show up late and they let him in so I did an abbreviated safety briefing for him during which I covered muzzle, finger, and sweeping but didn't mention dropping the gun. Didn't realize he was a left handed shooter and the guys out front sold him a right handled holster. Very first time up to the line he drew his gun, went to transfer it to his left hand and dropped it. I was saying Stop as he bent over to pick it up but he still got it and then stopped. I felt bad for him but he was DQ'd. I did have the guys out front refund his entry fee and refund his holster but I couldn't let him continue. I don't think he has been back.

The shooter made a mistake that should result in a match DQ...learn from it and do better next time. Same goes for the MD...he made a mistake. Help him learn from it so he can do better next time, don't DQ him forever by refusing to work with him.

As you quoted: The fact that it says "aiming OR shooting at targets" implies that you don't have to aim to shoot at a target.

one of my 9 Pros originally felt like it had 2 trigger pulls...one to move the striker block and another to drop the sear. The USB made a huge difference with that one and has helped some with all the rest.

I have some great news! My Leupold spotting scope will be hand delivered to me next week from Legion to Rockcastle Sniper Match. The honest actions of the people in our shooting sports speaks chapters. Thanks to the SE3gun staff! I worked stage 1 and never saw it. I am glad it is getting back to you. Please post the honest person that is taking care of it, they deserve recognition. We delivered several things to Lost-and-found but they were mostly chamber flags. I'm keeping Pat's hat. After a few staples and a couple of zip ties, it fits just fine!

Mud?!? Pfft....there was one little mud puddle to the side of the road as we were driving in. Other than that...perfect! Ok, so maybe there is some mud. Slip and slid a little and was thankful for 4WD but never fell on my butt today.

Traditionally we have done the 3rd Saturday of March, June, and September as well as the Saturday after Thanksgiving. In 2014 we will only do March, September, and the Saurday after Thanksgiving. We are skipping the match in June because they are having a big 3-gun in Clinton that weekend.

I undertsand if others also take advantage of being off work Friday to setup for a Saturday match. Mark came out and setup for our 3 gun today, will shoot it tomorrow, will go to Charleston to shoot their match Sunday, then down to Ft. Benning next week for their 3-gun. The only uncertainty is if his key will still fit the lock when he gets home. I wish I could make the match in Charleston Sunday but I'll be lucky if I can walk tomorrow night. I see nothing that would imply that the shooter should start in or out of the shooting area, so I would say that either is acceptable. I consider this much like the difference between having a starting position that mandates, "hands touching wall" instead of "hands touching Xs on wall". If specific direction is not given then some freedom of placement is given and should be expected. If the wording included something like, "Upon signal enter shooting area and..." then that would have implied starting outside. As it is written, nothing implies in nor out.

I can't find any written justification for it but when I witnessed the RM coming to score a pulled target at the Nationals a few years ago the (C?)RO started explaining his reasoning and was told (I think by the shooter) that the RM was there to score the target and just the target, not to listen to his reasoning. The RO did shut up at that point implying that the target should be scored on its own appearance without explanations. I also find nothing that states that the scoring of a target is something from which the general peasantry should be excluded. To the contrary, 9.6.1 provides:

The closest reference i could find for that, other than calibration, was 8.7.4: That implies that any RO has the ability to set or approve the setting of a target. When it comes to actually calibrating steel poppers, that is the job of the RM (frequently the same person at a local match).

In a previous thread, it was noted that any match official can issue the DQ. As MD, RM, CRO, and Senior Stapler at one of our recent matches I DQ'd myself after I finished a stage where several members of the gallery (2 first time competitors and their spouses) said that I broke the 180 as I backed up and rounded a barrel. I didn't *think* I had broken the 180 but the guy who was filling in as RO was in the wrong position to see and I was pushing the envelope on that run. I certainly don't want new competitors thinking that "As long as the RO doesn't see it it is OK". At our Level 1 matches everyone is a match official (they all help RO, score, and reset). If anyone gets a gun pointed at them I want them yelling STOP.

At a recently opened Sportsman's Warehouse in Aiken, SC they had one set of ammo reserved for those buying a gun and another set that was available to anyone. I can't fault them reserving some ammo for gun buyers because who would want to buy a gun and not be able to at least get a box or two of ammo with it.
