  1. For "realistic" reloading practice (in addition to sitting at home) I use a pistol plate rack. I start w/ 2 shells in the gun. Shoot one, load 4, shoot 1, load 4, shoot remaining plates, unload gun, and start again. Repeat until top of thumb is raw. From 10 yards w/ 7.5's you won't hurt anything and resetting is a snap. For shooting practice I like to use MGM auto poppers scattered around a bay. They're 4" in diameter so similar in size to a clay and no resetting to do.
  2. White Oak Armament has a "Squad Designated Marksman" variant which is a 20" stainless 1:8, fluted, w/ cuts for A2 FSB. Shoots 55's and 69's just fine. Mine is sub-MOA w/ Black Hills 69's in a CTR-02 upper and Clark's CF handguard. http://www.whiteoakarmament.com/barrels.htm They will also sell you a headspaced bolt but in all my research this shouldn't be necessary in an AR. I have swapped bolts and carriers back and forth between rifles and everything has worked fine. Alternatively, JP sells an ultra-light 18" which is 1:9.
  3. Erik, Thanks for the update. IIRC the EOTech outer circle is 65MOA and I don't find it intrusive. I would be leery of making it too small because at 1X you may end up w/ a big red (or green) mess. I would prefer 1/2MOA clicks because that's what my other scopes have but I don't currently dial so no big deal. If you can get this thing as bright as a Meopta I'll be first in line.
  4. Todd, Love it. I'm hoping the circle and center dot would be illuminated (like an EOTech)?
  5. I like the center post extended up to 300yds but I disagree w/ the offset dot. A shooter just needs to know that at <50yds you aim a little high. I think it's way too confusing.
  6. Well, it's brighter than the 1st gen but it isn't EOTech/Meopta bright. Thread about the 2nd gen here: http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?...c=87354&hl= If you're familiar w/ the Meopta it's equivalent to a Meopta on level 6 (Meopta's go to 7) so it's pretty good but it's not enough to work in desert sunshine.
  7. Hmm. Maybe it's because I'm an old EOTech guy but I like the idea that the outer circle will be illuminated. Illumination helps the most at short range and that's where you use the larger circle. I don't think having a black circle would be all that useful. For long range stages I can see how having the stadia illuminated could be weird. In that case just run that stage w/o illumination. If Erik can get the USO scope to be brighter than my XTR I'm interested.
  8. Erik, I currently run a 2nd gen Burris XTR. But if you can get your reticle (the circle and dot, not the stadia) to be Meopta-bright I'll shell out $1,400 for it tomorrow. If the stadia had 5mph marks that would be bonus.
  9. Thanks to the AMU, Linda, and the RO's for all their hard work! Had a great time. Hope to come back next year.
  10. First, it was nice to meet you at FB3G today; thanks for letting me take a peek through your ZX-6i. On the focal plane subject, have you had any trouble with your holdovers changing when using different magnification settings? I'm still quite new to the sport but as I understand it, with a SFP reticle zeroed and holdovers calculated at 6X, the holdovers would be different at 4X, 1X, etc. With a 1-6X optic, 6X may be too much for say, 300yd targets so maybe you'd like to use 4X for that distance. Won't your holdovers change depending on the magnification selected? I'm not arguing for FFP because of this, just trying to get a feel for how one uses variable power optics most effectively and perhaps igniting the whole holdover vs dialing discussion.
  11. I don't care for it one bit. Flimsy aluminum barrel nut and once the tube is glued on its pretty much on there. It is ultralight though. I have one planned for a 20" build I'm doing over the winter. Wanted to go as light as possible to help w/ the weight of the barrel. I've only removed the VTAC from my current upper once in two years so I don't think the lack of "serviceability" will be a problem. I just hope it's strong.
  12. If you're looking for a cheap/light handguard, assuming you don't need to add any accessories, you should check out the Hogue one. http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=112320
  13. To echo the others.... If it was locking back prior to the EZ loader install then it's the EZ loader bouncing on recoil and closing the bolt. I have this problem currently but haven't gotten upset enough to try and fix it. I just try to shoot my stages so I don't go empty At this point it loads shells perfectly and I'd rather have it fail to lock back on empty but otherwise work 100% than lower the reliability. Maybe I'll mess w/ it after Benning. I have an 1100 Tactical and have done nothing to it except a Nordic tube and EZ loader. I'm running stock gas ports, stock action spring, stock o-ring, etc. I shoot Federal 2 3/4 7.5 shot and Fed reduced recoil slugs. I do clean and oil it every time I shoot it (Since it's a direct gas system I treat it like my AR) and have never had the inclination to open up gas ports or do anything else to "improve" its operation. The EZ Loader is to help me get the shells into the gun faster.
  14. Yep, I'll second gose's comments. Attended a few of the matches the last couple of years. Always well done. Will be missed next year.
  15. I have a NF 5.5-22 x 50 and an Aimpoint Micro on my .308. The Aimpoint works really well on the handguard.
  16. I bought a 20" JP LRP-07 when they first came out just because I wanted something larger than .223 in case I needed it for some reason and I wanted to see if I could hit anything at 1,000 yards. I'm happy to report that after a 1-day long range clinic I was reliably on paper [3'x4' piece of paper] at 1k yds. Mine was the only "gas gun" to hit the target at 1k. I'm planning to go to Iron Man next year and will use it as my long range gun. As for maybe shooting HM, my shotgun shooting is slow enough already - the last thing I need to add is cocking
  17. This thread: http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=87354 Has some more info and pics of the new and old reticles with out without ill. New model XTR illumination IS daylight visible. Without illumination the reticle is black. I have a first gen XTR and used it without illumination just fine for a couple years though lots of matches and numerous airline hops - has held up fine. I have since bought a new one but haven't really used it. I do like the new reticle as it's less intrusive. I like the BDC reticle even though I almost never shoot past 300yds. I also like that the center dot is smaller than on the Meopta - feels more precise to me. In the end, the XTR, Meopta, and Accupoint are all quality scopes - just pick one, learn your holdovers, and practice with it.
  18. Did it do this from the start of the match or later? With full or empty mags? I would check the gas block - it may not be open wide enough. Problem I had was that I set the gas block with a clean and oiled gun and once it got dirty it wouldn't have enough gas to cycle properly. Try opening the gas block a half turn.
  19. I zero my center dot at 200. That puts 300 just above the first big dot, basically if the horseshoe were a circle it would be at the bottom of the circle.
  20. They did not change the model # - with both boxes side by side I couldn't see anything different. I ordered an XTR and mount combo from LaRue back in June and it was the new one. See also: http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?...opic=87354&
  21. Of course it's all personal preference. I think the IOR's horseshoe is a little wide when trying to deal with wind but I've never tried it in a match. I've been using an XTR for awhile now and recently bought one of the newer styles. I don't think you can go wrong.
  22. Back to the topic at hand, I reload bullets back from a 3 gun gear T-rig on my weak leg. Since I'm grabbing low it's a more natural motion for me to just swing the mag in front of me and it orients correctly to go into the gun.
  23. I find this whole "you must buy one or stay home" argument specious. A Saiga-12 can be had for $559. That's cheaper than a Remington 1100 and WAY cheaper than a Benelli M2. Then most shooters tweak their shotguns w/ different sights, gunsmithing the bolts, loading port mods, etc, etc. Tactical shooters spending $2k on a raced-up M2 is quite common. So is it fair for a stock 1100 to compete against a Benny Hill M2? There's always an equipment race even within divisions. I shoot a production pistol in 3-gun (because that's what I shoot in pistol matches) against more expensive Limited guns that shoot softer and carry more ammo. Do I complain? No, it's a choice I made. I have the option of buying a 2011 or whatever. But back to shotguns... I'm an 1100 shooter but I say let the Saigas into Limited/Tactical Scope and see what happens (with limits of course like no comps, optics, etc same as for tube guns). I agree w/ the others, if you want to keep new technology out then shoot He-Man
