  2. Holy zombie thread Batman! Ok, resurrecting this one. I pierced a primer on my CTR-02 and it blew some crap down into my ejector causing FTE's. I figured since I'd have to take the bolt apart I might as well replace the ejector and extractor springs. So what's the consensus on extractor springs? Wolff? Insert, no insert? The JP bolt did have an insert (or what Brownell's calls an AR-15 extractor buffer).
  3. It may have been an honest mistake but once the mistake was pointed out he continued to shoot w/ the illegal equipment. That is cheating, plain and simple. There's no benefit of the doubt here. The fact that he left the most valuable prize on the table for 2nd place shows that he knew what he did was wrong but didn't come forward. I mean, come on, this is America. You can screw up hard and if you throw yourself on the mercy of popular opinion and say you screwed up and beg for forgiveness people will give it. Look at damn near every politician in office today. The level of hero worship that goes on in this sport is laughable. The "cool kids" blatantly cheat - getting "doubles", not being DQ'd for slug on steel because it was Daddy's match, marking targets on a memory stage at SMM3G a few years ago, the list goes on. I shoot this sport because I think it's fun but the number of top shooters that I respect has gotten quite short. Not that anyone cares who I am and whether I respect them but I'm one of the "little people" who actually pay full price for my equipment and I do pay attention to how these people represent their sponsors.
  4. Hey everyone. I just replaced the RM in my Brazos SX w/ an FLGR and Wolff springs. I'm shooting light loads (3-gunner so no PF to worry about). I went to the range the other day and started w/ the 9lb spring. Gun functioned perfectly and it felt better than the RM. 8lb also functioned perfectly and felt even better. 7lb felt even better put a couple times the slide would "lock" back. But it wasn't engaging the slide lock. If I just touched the back of the slide it would go forward and chamber another round. This happened 3 times or so in 100 rounds. I then thought maybe the 7lb was too light so I went back to the 8lb. Same thing - it would randomly "lock back". So will polishing the spring ends help and how would I go about doing such a thing? Any idea if that is what's happening? I was also thinking of getting a shock buff as I was thinking maybe the slide is hitting the stop too hard and somehow jamming. Maybe a buff would help? Ideas?
  5. You need to shoot both (or as Czechmates are kind of rare, find someone w/ a TS Limited gun to check the ergonomics). I have a Czechmate and love it - I've shot CZ from Production through Limited to Open. I picked up a Brazos 2011 (9mm) and am playing around with it. Ergonomics aren't quite right yet but I'm still figuring it all out. At this point, the only thing that gives the 2011 the edge in my book is that having spent so much time w/ irons I like the 90-degree mounts to get the dot closer to the bore. Because of the frame angle on the CZ, using a Quinn mount results in the optic being slightly higher than on the 2011. As for knowledgeable 'smiths... the Czechmate is a factory gun. I've run mine for 2 years now and have never done anything besides clean it. Once you get a load worked up the gun just works. That being said the big stick has puked (FTF) a couple of times but I've never had a problem w/ the standard TS 20-round mags. I think Grams was working on a kit for the big stick so that may solve the problem. But the gun itself is flawless. The only work I've ever had done on any of my CZ's was to install fiber optic sights and Angus at czcustom took care of that for me.
  6. I've had good luck w/ the CR Speed. No drops and I only shoot 3-gun so I'm using rifles and shotguns (sometimes w/ slings) w/ the loaded pistol and it was has stayed nice and secure.
  7. Ok everyone, so I'm new to Open and to 2011's so be gentle. I picked up a lightly-used Brazos ProSX. It's set up for 9-Major w/ a Recoil-Master and mainspring of unknown weights. I only shoot 3-gun so power factor is not an issue. I'm planning to shoot 115gr bullets with a slow powder (currently using 7.4 gr of 3n38 in my CZ open gun). Since this gun has poppelholes I stepped up the charge to create more gas (with its current setup it won't reliably eject the 7.4gr loads). I have some 8.2gr loads worked up and they are very reliable and accurate. However, the gun feels like it bounces around a lot. The initial hit is harder than my CZ (though my CZ is much heavier so that's likely most of it) but the bigger problem is that the dot really bounces around before it settles down causing my splits to be pretty slow. After doing some reading here I'm wondering if the gun is oversprung for my minor loads. The seller told me he was also planning to shoot Steel Challenge and included a standard guide rod, reverse plug (I think that's what that extra piece is), and a few Wolff variable springs (7lb, 8lb, and 9lb) that say Colt Commander. So my first question is, Are these the right length springs for this gun? After my reading here, this is how my plan is shaping up - please provide a sanity check. 1) Install the standard guide rod and plug. Doing some test fitting tonight the rod sticks out a 1/8" or so under the comp. I assume this is ok or should I have it cut so it's flush? 2) Should I bother with different mainsprings to get the lightest one that will reliably fire my loads (I use Fed 100's)? Though from what I gather it's not feasible to change these at the range? 3) Try different recoil springs. I do not have any shock buffs. Should I go for the lightest one first or start w/ the heavier (9lb) one and just see which one feels right? What will I break if it's undersprung? Just the slide stop? I could have a spare one of those in my bag. Anywhere else to check for wear/damage if the slide goes crashing to the rear? Should I add a shock buff? Thanks!
  8. Wolff has conventional in 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, & 17 Lb. and variable in 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, & 17 Lb. in Commander length.
  9. I'm using a WOA 20" SDM barrel. Accuracy is phenomenal (It's Wylde chambered - shoots sub-MOA w/ Black Hills 69's). Weighs ~2.5lbs. But w/ the contour it's not nose-heavy.   10. I agree w/ gose. Outlaw matches do this all the time. Letting RO's shoot the match for free has got to be cheaper than paying all their expenses (again, this is how EVERY other 3-gun match in the nation works so it's not like it's a new concept). It also helps work out the bugs on stages before the main competition starts. I loved having 12 stages. If a few of them were modified to make them a bit shorter (ie on Stage 9, let people go prone from the second shooting position) I think it would be fine. My Squad (8) had very few reshoots and we stayed pretty close to on schedule the whole match. In all it was a very technical match and I appreciated the stage design. Prize table was much improved from 2009 as well (missed the match last year). Thanks to everyone for putting on a great match.
  11. If you have the $$, get a Swaro 1-6 and call it a day. IMO the offset RD was pioneered back in the day (by Voight, Miculek, et al) when there weren't any good 1-4 or 1-6 optics out there. So they used a 3-9 and a offset RD. IMO I think they continue using that because that's what they're used to and let's all be honest here, it's way more about the quality of the shooter than the quality of the equipment. So an expert w/ a 3-9 and offset RD will be faster than an average shooter w/ a 1-6 and vice versa. I would also contend that an expert w/ a 1-6 will do just as well as an expert w/ an offset RD. 6X is plenty for everything we shoot here (just wrapped up BRM3G as I type and 6X was plenty to hit the 540yd target on stage 3). My point is that if you're just starting out, get a good 1-4 or 1-6 and practice w/ that - much easier to become competent w/ one optic. W/ a throw lever I contend that you're not losing anything to someone w/ an offset RDS.

    How is the checkmate working? any issues Sorry, wife had a baby 4 weeks ago so it's been a little crazy around here. Haven't shot since early December. Was supposed to shoot a 3-gun match last wkend but they cancelled due to weather. I'm hoping to shoot a local pistol match or 2 before SMM3G in March.

The big stick that came w/ my CM has 12 coils and my 20-round TS mag (using the CZ Custom extended spring) has 10 (I've never counted such things so not sure if I'm counting the right things but bottom line is that the big stick spring has more than the 20). My big stick has functioned flawlessly. I'm using Montana Gold CMJ's loaded to 1.155". I used JHPs on my SP-01 but my TS didn't like them (would get hung up on the feed ramp if the mag was more than half full) so I switched to CMJs and just stuck with that in the CM.

    Hey everyone. Finally got everything sorted out w/ installing my Quinn II mount. The CMore is sitting just to the left of center so I'm going to work w/ my gunsmith to add a small shim to push it to the right a bit. Otherwise it's great. Pics attached.

    CZ TS Race Holster

    I'm running the CR Speed WSH and it's working fine. But for 3-gun I'd like something more secure. Does someone have a link to the Bladetech Open holster?
  19. All, So after a lengthy delay getting a Quinn mount installed on my CM I've finally started shooting it. I'm loving the gun. I started w/ an SP-01 in Production. I then started shooting 3-gun and ran a TS. I'm now making the jump to Open and was happy that CZ came through w/ the CM so I could keep the same ergonomics that I was used to w/ my TS. My question is around cleaning and barrel removal. Is there some secret to getting the guide rod in and out without bleeding or losing an eye? I've only done it twice and each time I just kept fussing and swearing at it until it snapped into place. I'm finding myself not doing complete cleanings because I hate that freaking guide rod to much. I can take some pictures if it'll help.
  20. +1 Chivas. I treat my 1100 Tactical like my AR - I clean and lube w/ CLP (wipe down w/ patches w/ CLP on them until they're clean - it's not dripping but everything is coated) after every shooting session. Hasn't ever let me down.
  21. All, So I have a problem (ok, well I have many problems but for now let's just focus on one ). Due to poor planning on my part I have a local 3-gun match to shoot on Saturday and I'm out of birdshot. My tested birdshot is Winchester AA 1300fps 7.5's. These are flawless in my Saiga. Federal bulk pack 1200fps mostly work but I've had some FTE's in testing. These are the only loads (besides some Federal high-brass 6's and 4's that also work) that I have run through my gun. I have access to the following: Winchester AA 1300fps 8's Remington Nitro 1300fps 7.5's I will have some high-brass 6's (smallest shot size allowed for this match) for far steel though I'm guessing there won't be any steel beyond 35yds. So should I go with untested 7.5's or tested 8's?
  22. I have used 2 x 2016 batteries and that helped quite a bit. In theory it will overdrive the LED and if left on for long periods our used in hot weather will decrease the life of the LED. That being said I've used it for about 6 months and it's been fine. Though I always turn the LED off between stages and I haven't been in the desert in the heat of the summer. That being said, even the XTR being overdriven is still not as bright as the K-dot but it's close.
  23. I ordered the Millett version of the MGM and with longer screws will work fine. The longer screws are labelled: #4-40x3/4"
  24. I just used a piece of para cord cut to length to allow full extension of legs (ie when the legs are fully extended the cord is nearly tight. Then I just tied a clove hitch on each bipod leg. I can take a picture if you want but it's pretty simple. Before the buzzer I just grab the loop w/ my middle finger.
